  1. There are some important considerations to make when deciding to go to seperates. Geneally, you get better DACs (cleaner, more detailed, less noise) and better amps when using seperates, but naturally, they can cost much more. The MAJOR problem with seperates is that they tend to be atleast 1 year (or more) behind in technology compared to recievers. There are only a few pre/pros that have HDMI and that is only ver 1.1 or 1.2 if your lucky, while many recievers are coming out now with ver 1.3, plus some of the newest recievers can decode the audio formats from Bluray and HDDVD disks. I'm not positive, but i do not believe ANY pre/pro has the ability to do room EQ. So you have to decide what features are important. I would suggest if you are happy with the sound...don't upgrade... -Dave
  2. Yeah, better not tempt fate or the new wife. Congrats and best of luck!
  3. Phil- What about meeting in Lynchburg? I have been meaning to go there for many months.... interested now? -Dave
  4. bump one last time before going on other forums...
  5. Bump one last time before they are advertised off the Klipsch Forums...
  6. Coytee- I like cheap bumps! I was hoping to sell them before July/August...but if i still have them... Best of luck on the seminar! -Dave
  7. I agree its an excellent amp. I believe it does have a 10 year warranty, however, according to the Parasound website their warranty is NOT transferable. -Dave
  8. Im selling a bunch of my assorted HT gear which hasnt gotten a lot of use recently. Speakers: Klipsch RF-3s Black (**Sold**) Klipsch RC-3 (asking $125) This is the original RC-3s with black veneers in very good condition and would be an excellent upgrade from the RF-15/25s and Synergy line. I still have all of the original packing and manuals. SVS CS-Ultra w/ Samson S1000 amp ($1000): Purchased 12/2001 for $1450 The Ultra is one of original cylindrical series subs and is powered by the Samson S1000 amp (separate unit - included), and provides loads of clean and powerful base. More info can be found @ http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-csultra1.cfm I havent used it for probably close to 2 years and its in excellent condition. I still have all of the original packing and BetterCables interconnect. Ideally, I would prefer not to ship it but options can be discussed. I can likely deliver (or meet ½ way) in NY, PA, or DE. Amp: Parasound HCA-1205A 5 channel amp ($650): Purchased 12/2002 The 1205A is a 5-channel amp delivering 140 watts on each channel at 8 O. It has paired very nicely with the Klipsch speakers, its low floor noise limits hissing from the horns and is warm sounding. More info can be found @ http://www.parasound.com/vintage/hca1205a.php Its in excellent condition. I still have all of the original packing materils and manuals. Shipping and insurance extra, imagine it should be $50 for this heavy amp (46lbs) Cables: Monster Interlink Digital 100 3 - $10 (shipped) 2x Monster svideo 6 - $10 (shipped) Monster Interlink 250 2 channel Analog 5 ($10 shipped) Please feel free to PM/email me with any questions or requests. I can take pictures and post them if requested. Cheers -Dave
  9. Im selling the recently redesigned Juicy Music pCATs. A lack of planning on my part and the what the h*ll are those? comment from the g/f has resulted in the opportunity to buy the pCATs without the long wait. I ordered the pCATs many months ago to pair with a set of RF3s, but received a great price on a pair of Dynaudio C1s I couldnt pass up. I have spent the past week going back and forth between the RF3s and C1s, and Parasound HCA-1205 SS and pCATs, I must admit they pair beautifully with the Klipsch, warm and detailed. I completely agree with the comments posted on the forum about the pCATs, they are TRULY excellent! However, Im going to keep the C1s, and the pCATs just dont match that well with themso your gain! The special introductory price posted on the forum was $3000 (current $3795), Im asking: $3000/obo which will include shipping & insurance in original box with original tubes. They weigh 65 lbs each so shipping is expensive, originally $165+ from California to NY, its a great deal! Please feel free to PM/email me with any questions or requests. I can take pictures and post them if requested. Cheers -Dave PS: I have some other HT type stuff for sale, but will post more details in the HT section Speakers: Klipsch RF-3s ($300) Klipsch RC-3 ($125) SVS Ultra w/ Samson 1000 amp ($1000/obo) Cables: Monster Interlink Digital 100 3 - $10 (shipped) 2x Monster svideo 6 - $10 (shipped) Monster Interlink 250 2 channel Analog 5 ($10 shipped) Amp: Parasound HCA-1205A 5 channel amp ($650)
  10. I just got my pCATs and Mark wasn't joking THEY ARE HEAVY! Hopefully, this weekend I'll be able to spend some time with them to figure them out, but preliminary indications are that they don't match well with either my dynes or CDP. Not suprising as the Dynes require ALOT of power, so i'll switch back the the Ref3s and get some good comparisons. Cheers... -Dave
  11. Classical SACDs (I'm a symphony nut...) Beethoven: Symphonies no 5 & 7 / Kleiber Beethoven: The Symphonies / Karajan I also like Dvorak & Tchaikovsky symphonies, but never really a fan of Mozart. -Dave
  12. IMO, you don't need to use any special CD or SACD for breakin. Simply play what you want to play when you want to and don't worry about it. SACD is a very niche market, so unless you are a jazz or classical music fan, its almost a wasted feature. Enjoy the player, i have the CD/SACD only version, its a nice player! -Dave
  13. TheEar- They are wonderful monitors, infact, i'm constantly amazed at the size of the soundstage that these little speakers put out. Your past praise of the dyns in this forum made me want to go and listen to them as i was on a search for some better speakers. I don't know how many times i listened to the C1s and other dynes in numerous stores with a wide variety of sources, i even brought my CDP in one time to listen. To be honest, nothing below the confidence level screamed BUY ME, and even then sometimes they didn't sound good (bad room or poorly mated electronics). I believe that the key in the confidence line was the Esotar2 tweeter. Anyways, I found that when paired with an Accuphase integrated i didn't enjoy the sound as they seemed to suck the life and dynamics out of the C1s, the Arye integrated was only so so (really bad room reflections at this dealer), but the combination of a Jeff Rowland (Concerto pre/pro and a 312 amp) really made the dyns sing. I was never able to find a Simaudio/Dyne dealer to listen to that praised combination... Naturally, the downfall of of the speaker is price, one can argue that the preformance to price ratio on a Klipsch speaker is better, but to each his own..... Cheers.... -DrPyro PS: I have been thinking about a new center (but i'm not super picky about movie stuff, until i get HDDVD or BlueRay capability), would you recomend saving a few $ and get the Contour S CX or Contour S C or just pay the $6k and get a Confidence Center? Thanks...
  14. easy...they don't blend.... As expected, the RC3 struggles to keep up with the C1s, but, I mainly use the system for 2 channel so i'm not too critical about the center channel. To be honest, i was suprised how well the system does when watching a movies. Naturally, when calibrating the channels with constant pitch sounds, you really hear the tonal imbalance between the speakers, but due to the dynamical nature of movie tracks its not really bothersome [to me]. Will i move the RF3s back to get that tonal balance? HECK NO! I really have enjoyed the C1s when listening to classical music, the rich midtones really are leaps and bounds above the RF3s (my major complaint of the RF3s) and have even more detail at the higher freqs (but one should demand some improvement at nearly 10x the price) -DrPyro
  15. Okay...here is my current setup. i know..i know..the main spakers aren't Klipsch speakers, but the center still is!. The RF3s are sitting in the hall till i find a home for them. TV: Pioneer 6070 with a Sanus VMDD26 full articulating mount (still working on hiding the wires etc) Stand: Sanus (no clue what version....) Pre/Pro: Acurus ACT-3 Amp: Parasound HCA-1205A Speakers: Dynaudio C1s (mains) Klipsch RC-3 (center) CD/SACD: Sony XA-9000ES HTPC (TheaterTek, MyHD 120 & OnAir Creator)
  16. George- Sorry for the slow reply, i was out of town.... I hate to admit it, but right now my main speakers are Dynaudio Confidence C1s. I was running some RF-3s, but they are sitting in the corner ever since I got the C1s. I'm not sure how the tubes are going to pair with the C1s, as they LOVE big powerful amps, nor do I know what i'm going to do with the RF-3s. I will be trying both sets of speakers with the pCATs as soon as I get them... Mark- It has been a long wait, but seeing the quality of the Blueberry pre/pros, I'm sure these amps will be outstanding. As for the Western NY get together, I really haven't looked much at my schedule.... How about sometime in May or something? Cheers -Dave
  17. I don't have a pair of Welborn SETs, but i will shortly have a pair of Juicy Music pCATs. I realize they are different flavors, but who knows.... I'm in the buffalo area... -Dave
  18. Paul- Hey, great link to Mark's stuff.... I love some of his comments on recording, "so shrill that I had to sit in the next room just to tolerate it." I have stumbled across recording like this, so its nice to see someone actually makes comments like this and not the "happy happy" comments in Penguin's guide or other CD library book. -Dave
  19. Very true mastering of any media is critical to most of our enjoyment of that media. In fact, when we were listening to the "junk" CD just to give a feeling for just compressed and 1-D a bad CD can sound, we did discuss the mastering of a CD and what garbage some of these engineers are using to NOT tell he just made a shit CD. You are not strictly limited to 80s based CDs, I have found several recent CDs (mostly classical, because that is what i buy) that were horribly mastered. I still can't comprehend what they are using during the mastering process to miss massive tonal imbalances and compression artifacts, do they simply NOT listen to what they just made or do they simply not care because it will still sell? I don't know... -Dave
  20. Craig- You have a great point that a top notch LP system can perform extreamly well. I think that much of the decision comes down to ability to get your music on a particular format and age of the user. I grew up in the "CD age" and my only experince of records was from my parents. However, I don't like MP3s because I can hear a quality difference between CDs and MP3. It must be a the same feeling that the "record age" users feel about CDs. _Dave
  21. I'm alive...I'm alive...Thank god I'm alive... Just joking...the drive over from Buffalo wasn't bad at all, it was one of my first times to enjoy the lovely upstate NY weather! After talking to Whamo, I think NY only spends $ on cleaning I-90 and doesn't spend a dime on cleaning "other" roads... Anyways, I definatly want to thank Mark & Kathy for being such fine hosts. This was my first time to see and listen to Khorns and tubes. I have seen many pictures of Khorns, but they still suprised me on exactly how massive they are but how little they actually occupy the available room space. Mark's listening room is probably 20' x 15' (or larger) and Kathy has been a good sport about the Khorns, having decorated the top of them nicely so they don't stand out....too much [*-)]. Mark shuffled a large varity of music through both my Sony XA-9000ES SACD player and Mark's CDP. I also have to admit for redbook CDs, I would probably be hard pressed to tell the difference between the two CDPs, however, perhaps Mark might be able to tell some difference after a long duration test drive on his system. Much of the music that mark shuffled through I wasn't familuar with, except the classical music that i bought. The khorns sounded nice, but you could instantly tell when a bad recording was inserted. My Ref-3s are probably more forgiving to crummy recordings. Just by that simple fact, I would have to think hard about "upgrading" to the khorns, plus the fact i have no corners in which to toss them. Being a "kid" in comparisons to many on this board, I have grown up in the digital era, so it was a real treat to listen to the VRDs and a few records. I'd also agree that records are too much hasle, I just simply want to hit play and let it rip... I have recently purchased the pCATs (not delivered yet...) as my first adventure into tubes, I was thankful for Mark's assistance in how to bias the tubes. I was very suprised as to the heat that the VRDs released as Mark jokingly said "They are my winter amps". I'd really have to sit down and listen on my system to get a feel for tube vs SS. As for the blueberry, when the design concepts were floated on the forum, I thought the front looked a tad ugly. Now that I have seen them in person, they look a tad "retro" but all of the switches are solid and have a great feedback. The construction looks top notch, I was impressed and it makes me look forward to the pCATs even more. The highlight of the blueberry MUST be the wooden case, it looked FANTASTIC, exceptionally well made! Too bad we couldn't really give it a real serious testing. It was a pleasure to meet Whamo, Daed and his wife. Daed has a real winner for a wife because i think she loves the music and speakers as much as he does! Too bad my lady doesn't..... Cheers -Dave PS: Us WNY are going to be a tad smarter [] and have our gathering in the springtime, so y'all are all invited. I just have to find a place as good as Piggy Pats! [<)]
  22. Excellent.... It will be fun to meet everyone... See you on Saturday! Cheers -Dave
