  6. thumbs down to sony receivers! avoid them at all costs!!!!! 1) high distortion 2) DSP processor SUCKS (connected to #1) 3) the eternal nemesis, the "sony hiss" go for denon or yamaha - low distortion, great DSP, no hiss - MUCH better quality and value... I got the 575 for my mom's HT and am thoroughly unimpressed. It's rated at 100x5, but I don't believe it for a second. I'm a little more of a discerning listener than her and my dad, so it's going to be fine for them (and it was a huge step up from their 30-yr-old JC Penney), but I wouldn't have one in my house if somebody handed me one free from the store. ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound! 7. gamer - I have been abundantly pleased with my Yamaha receiver, the RX-V990. I have seen other posters here mention that Yamaha's are "too bright," but that has not been my experience at all. Yamaha has some of the best distortion ratings in the entire industry - the V990 is rated at .0125% - they can handle 2 ohms, etc, etc... I have had no problems with mine whatsoever... the full audio spectrum is clean and clear, and it can most definitely get LOUD... and with that extremely low distortion, it LOVES getting even LOUDER. Klipsch speakers are innately bright because of the nature of their horn tweeters, and I think this may be causing people to think that it's the fault of the amp...where I think it's actually just the nature of the horns to be very bright - not harsh, but VERY bright... anyway, to echo someone else, the 3 brands of receiver I like are Yamaha, Denon and Marantz. ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  8. capta-- I just outfitted my mom's new HT w/ all Klipsch (except for rears) from uBid - exact models you mentioned. The KSC-C1 is the closest match for the KG 3.5's (I believe the Klipsch recommendation was the KV-3 or something back when they were still being made)... anyway, her HT sounds GREAT. The front soundstage is pretty much perfect. I even had to go with the KSW-10 for size, and it's performing wonderfully in her setup. Can't go wrong with the prices they're going for now. ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!

The C7 has a very warm tone with my setup, not too bright at all... and the V990 has no problem delivering earthquake-level bass out of my Soundfield V's... Yamaha has some of the lowest distortion rates in the industry - the V990 is rated at .0125%, and I have had no problems with it in the 6 or so years I've had it. Ah, yes, were you also once a DAKonian, HornEd? How many others are here, I wonder? I consider myself to be very fortunate enough to have had a summer job back in 1990 that allowed me to purchase a pair of dbx Soundfield V's from the beloved mail-order electronics king, Drew Allen Kaplan... what a steal! These speakers are still kicking major booty after 11 years... not a single problem with them whatsoever. And bass down to 24Hz with the 15" monsters... pretty much unbeatable sound for the price ($300/pr - $1900 msrp) even today! I really don't have any need for an external sub with these babies, but I'll probably have one some day. That, or powered towers. Any way, I won't blow on. It's always neat to run into people that have heard of, perhaps even bought from, DAK. My brother introduced me to the magazine way back in the 80's, and he purchased a pair of the BSR 5-way towers which are basically the same thing as the dbx's (dbx bought BSR soon after he bought his speakers). I found out just 2 days ago that Drew is still around... I was looking for open domain names, and punched in drew.com, and whadya know... it's Drew Kaplan's page! Go to www.dak2000.com and you'll see a picture of the Soundfield V's on the front cover of one of his old catalogs (DAK 1)... btw, I bet that dbx sub ROCKED, HornEd... any chance I could find one of those for sale somewhere? ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound! 16. I'm very interested in this, too. I've seen this "sony hiss" mentioned elsewhere on this board, but have not seen a thread directly related to it. My mom just bought the STR-DE545 and the hiss comes out of all 5 speakers, not just the center and rear - all of them. A friend of mine has a pretty high-end system w/ sony receiver, outboard Sony effects processor, etc, and his hisses extremely loud... what's the deal? The only time the hiss goes away is when I switch it to Tuner and listen to the radio... It can't be the way I've got it hooked up. It's not hooked up any different than my own system... in fact, it should be even better because my mom's is able to use optical digital cable. Insight please, gentlemen (and ladies)! ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!

You will get better deals on these particular speakers from uBid, not eBay (people are actually buying from ubid and turning right around and selling them on eBay because they can make a profit!) Also, you get new, boxed speakers, not used, and since the auction site sells them out of their own warehouse, you don't have to worry about dealing with Joe Blow from East Nowhere. 21. I, too, like to listen to music "untarnished" by digital effects. For one, you're losing sound quality just by virtue of what the DSP chips have to do to the data to add the echo and reverb and whatever else... The DSP setting I'm most comfortable with if I DO put it on, is Jazz Club, since it adds the least digitizing and fills the room a little more by using the back speakers. However, you'll also notice that with the DSP settings you lose a little (or a lot) of the sub-frequencies, and that don't bode too well with me. I've got 15" woofers that want it (bass), and ears that want it, too, and I don't like losing it to digitizing... to steal someone else's signature... 24. Panduit.... Officially, "Panduit Wire Duct." Panduit is the mfr. Basically, "conduit" made for computer network patch panels that's not a permanent channel for wire like conduit is. Like he said, it's got a cover that snaps on, and if the wire must leave the channel at a place besides one of the ends, you can just leave one of the "slots" out of the cover. A great suggestion, Steve - I hadn't thought of using this for HT. Am moving to a new house soon, so I'll definitely be picking some of this stuff up! ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
