  1. I was wondering - I have an HDTV monitor with progressive scan capability. Does this mean that I do not have to get a progressive scan DVD player to be able to obtain 720 lines of resolution? Or do I have to get a progressive scan DVD player? Or maybe I should ask this on a different site. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks
  2. You too must be a sound and Vision Reader! If not, in the most recent issues the questions is asked and answered regarding 6.1 channels of sound. It seems as though the DVD source is the key. I just don't think 6.1 gives that much more of a theater experience. I reember reading articles where 10.1 channels may be getting closer and closer (although far out of reach from the ordinary consumers).
  3. Moon You are correct. DTS ES and DD ES provide True 6.1 channels of sound. Thanks for the link too. DVDs encoded with DTS surround are becoming more and more available. I remember when there were only like 26 available titles!
  4. For what it's worth, you may not have to purchase a rear center at this point. Most DVDs are not encoded with 6.1 separate channels, so the rear center has to be "matrixed" in 99% of todays DVDs. If you are upgrading from a ProLogic receiver to a Dolby Digital / DTS receiver, you will be amazed at the difference without even thinking about the rear center.
  5. I recently began renting an HD cable box from my cable company. The box is the Scientific Atlanta 3100HD. This receiver can also pull down non HD signals. In my geographical area, I can only get 2 HD channels, HBO and Discovery. The pictures are amazing. The sound signal is usually in Dolby Digital (on HD shows), otherwise it is prologic. The Cable box has a coax digital out so I can connect to my audio receiver. The box by itself rents for $4.00 per month. I got the HBO package so I could have an additional HD signal to view so I pay approximately $10.00 per month on top of my existing cable bill.
  6. How much are you wanting for the KSF S5s? What color are they? Maybe some members we could split them up for you unless someone wants to buy the complete set.
  7. What are doing to sound proof your walls? I recently finished my attic to create a home theater. I live in a town house and share an adjoining wall with a neighbor. I decided to build another wall with insulation and some styrofoam between the layers of sheetrock as a sound barrier. My project took about three months We also opted to put in two layers of R-13 insulation - 1 on the inside wall and another on the kneewall and roof line area for actually increasing the "R" factor and for sound deadening. We had to install an additional central air conditioner, put down an additional layer of sub flooring and ran water pipes for a wet bar. We completed our project around the middle of December. You can bet I made sure to set the equipment up as soon as the carpet guys were finished! It was a project.
  8. Robertd I use a Yamaha receiver for my main HT set up. I really like the features. Several people on this site like the Yamaha/Klipsch combination. With regard to the SS-1s - you are correct about the wife factor. They are smaller and less obtrusive. The KSF-S5 also have a metal grill cover which is another reason I decided to go with the SS-1. I like a cloth grill cover better. I have seen the KSF S-5 sell used on Ebay from $200 to $250. My e-mail is KMijeski@chartertn.net
  9. Check on Ebay right now - 3-18-2002
  10. Robertd I just realized that we live in the same city. You are the only other person on here from Johnson City!!
  11. Robertd, I too dealt with the same issues you are facing now. I purchased the KSF 10.5s and the KSC-C1. I upgraded the center to the KSF C-5 (Found one used of course) and it was an incredible difference. Regarding the surrounds, I looked and looked for the matching surrounds on Ebay. Finally I contacted Klipsch Technical support and they suggested that the closest match would be the SS-1s. I currently have the SS-1s. They have the same frequency response as the KSF-S5. The SS-1s also have increased efficiency 94 db vs 90 db (I heard of others complaining they would have to turn the rears to +10 to even hear the KSF -S5). And all this comes in a smaller box. The SS-1s sound good but sound a little "thin" compared to the other speakers in the system. I am happy with what I have. It is extremely rare to find the KSF-S5 used, however, as soon as I purched my SS-1s, a pair of KSF-S5s went up on Ebay! - just my luck! If you can get the KSF -S5s get them, if you are getting impatient, like I did, get the SS-1s.
  12. I have the Klipsch KSF 10.5s - similar to the RF3 series. I have a KSF c-5 center channel which is similar to the RC3. I have a bedroom system with Polk Audio speakers (I got a lot of Circuit City gift cards for Christmas). Polk is not a bad speaker. However, The Klipsch offers much more clarity and efficiency. I would recommend getting the Klipsch.
  13. I have a pait of the 10.5s and I love them. I would think the 8.5s would perform very similar.
  14. eddieras - Truly the SS-1s are not that large. There is the SS.5 which is a little smaller (about the size of a regulation football)and would still match the components you mentioned.
  15. After getting my HT setup tweaked just perfect, I may be buying another house in the immediate future. The place in the new house for an HT setup is a very large room (20x30 feet.) Due to the design of the room, I cannot set the system up in the middle of the room, it will need to be over to the left side a little. Question: Should I place my WDST surrounds on the rear wall (about 10 feet behind the listener- in which the listener would be right in the middle of the soundstage from front to back) or attempt to place them on side walls (Where one speaker would obviously be closer than the other to the listener)? Any comments suggestions are appreciated. This message has been edited by kmijeski on 02-03-2002 at 09:14 AM
  16. Sab323, The reason people suggest changing you center channel is to create a perfect timbre match for your l and r fronts. Timbre = the characteristics of the sound of the speaker. The center channel carries much more than just vocals. In movies it can as carry more than 50% of all the sound coming from a particular movie. So a good center channel is important. The reason for a matching center channel is to create a "seamless" soundstage so that when a sound effect "care driving or etc" drives from left to right (ot vice versa) you are able to discern the location of the sound, and not the audible difference in the sound as it changed from left to center to right. I suggest you compare what you are using to the one recommended for use (I think the KSC SC1) to find the difference for yourself. You may find that the sound difference doesn't outwight the cost. But I prefer matching the speakers. I hope this helped you.
  17. Onemike, I have seen serveral KLF c-7s on e-bay.com and on Ubid.com . The issue may be the out of country shipping. Check with each individual seller to see if they are willing to ship to you for an additional fee of course. Goood luck
  18. I have for mains the 10.5s and a center c-5 and I was told by Klipsch the match for my sytem would be the ss-1s. (I wanted to consider the rs-3s but they said the ss-1 wouls be more timbre matched). Anyway, I at first mounted mine on the rear wall due to my Wife's choice, And more recently experimented with them on the side walls to the main listening area (couch)- which I seem to prefer a little better. One thing that I did notice is that when sitting more forward from the ideal sitting position (on another chair or love seat closer to the front speakers), I can hear the highs (tweeters) better because of the way the speaker is designed. I Also feel more "in the middle" of the action with the speakers on the side wall. Anyway it is really a personal preference. You may have to set them up temporarily on the side walls to tell what you like better. Mine are currently on the side walls. Good luck!

    Ksc-c1

Regarding the center channel, If you can pick up the C-5 to match with your 8.5s (or 10.5s) do so. You will be impressed with the difference. I started with the KSC-C1 and after upgrading to the C-5 I was blown away with the difference. The goal in Home Theater is to have a "seamless" soundstage. This is only created with the matching center. -Anyway for what it's worth-Keith
  20. Rodney, With all respect to what soundog says - he loves obviously loves this stuff. You on the other hand may not be so critical to sound quality as others. If you are going to get into it, buy the best you can afford - you will be happy you did! If you do not have an awesome system now, Then what you described would probrably be awesome to you. I like Yamaha receivers yet some of the people on this forum do not like them. If you have a budget to stick to then stick to it. I would recommend getting the c-1 center at least for one change( it would reproduce male voices much better). 80% of home theater sound comes from the center channel - so you want to get a good one. I had a c-1 and upgraded to a c-5 (no longer produced) because of the better sound quality difference and tonal matchinig to my 10.5s. there is just so much to think about! Keith
  21. I asked this question before on another string - Does anyone have any experience with the inexpensive Sherwood Home Theater receivers? I have seen them at circuit city for as low as $129. 100 watts X 5, dolby digital and DTS decoders built in. I am looking for a second system ( for bedroom) and am considering this receiver. Any comments? Thanks Keith
  22. SpartanDale, Let me know if you are interested in selling your quintets (even if only 2 of them) and sc.5 center. I am starting to put together a system for the bedroom. upgrading the center channel and front l and r should be your focus. Surrounds can wait for the budget to catch up. If you are wanting to go reference you can do the three fronts for about $800.00 depending on where you get the speakers. Keith

    Poll Question

Purchased it June 2001. Very good DVD.
  24. Anyone have much experience with the inexpensive Sherwood HT receivers? I am looking for an inexpensive 2nd system.

    dolby digital

The reason I am writing this post is that when I see "dolby digital" I assume this means Dolby digital 5.1. Well it must not always mean that because I have purchased two dvds that claim they are dolby digital when in fact they are only dobly pro logic. These are on older movies coming out on dvd such as "no way out" with Kevin Costner. Anyway this to me is frustrating because when I purchase a dvd, I want it to be 5.1 sound quality - the reason for dvd. This is misleading. Any comments are encouraged. Has anyone else experienced this? Keith
