    WTB-Turntable

I've got a nice Thorens TD160 (Mk1) with TP16 arm and a hardly used Shure M97xe cart.Original Teak plinth, no cover (guy I purchased it from had it in a cabinet. New belt and fresh Phil Wood oil in the spindle/thrust bearing cavity. The table works flawlessly and sounds great, however, if you have bouncy floors you will be tip-toeing across the room when playing so it doesn't skip. These suspension tables really work best sitting on a wall mount. If you go that route, you'll have no issue. I'll let her go for 200.00, plus shipping. I can send or post pics if interested.
  3. One of Rhasaan Roland Kirk's more accessible albums. One can venture as far as they like down the path of Roland Kirk's amazing discography.
  4. Speaking of Milt and his vibes...here is another favorite of mine.
  5. Big fan of MJQ also. Here is another great example with Laurindo Almeida.
  6. Wow, thanks for the link. Yeah, it sounds like the owner has the origin figured out. I would love to hear these.
  7. Found this speaker searching around the web. I'm guessing the person replying to the original thread is correct that the speaker is some sort of DIY project. Any of you have any idea how a speaker of this design might sound? Original thread: http://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-audio/625753.html
  8. Try grooveshark.com You can play an individual song, album, or build a playlist. No sign up or membership needed.
  9. Or use Dave Harris' Fastrac for the Cornwall with K55, fits in the original Cornwall cabinet. You can use the factory crossover (re-capped) untill your budget allows for an appropriate crossover.
  10. Mike, the Pink Triangle looks interesting, I was not aware of that company, also thanks for the recommendations. Excellent food for thought. tigerwoodKhorns, I sent you a PM.
  11. Man, this rings true. Sound advice, indeed. Thanks So, I've abandoned the purchase of the old Pioneer table, and am onboard with the idea of getting one Nice table. At this point, my front end (technics 1200 & Thorens TD-160) is the weakest link, the rest of the system being a rebuilt Scott 299C and Cornwalls with Fastrac Mid horn and re-capped B2 crossovers. I have no experience with modern mid-high end tables, just old Duals, Marantz, Thorens, and DD Technics. So, my question to you guys ( and this may be better off in another thread) is, what should I be looking for? I may be able to scrounge up the cash for something in the $1000-1500 range, but can't afford to make that purchase twice. A used Rega P3, Linn LP-12, MusicHall, VPI, old Gerrard 301? I'm open to advice from those with experience with some of the nicer tables out there. My preference is for the less finicky tables (though I'll put up with some inconvienence for better sound) and a wall mount is not a good option for me right now. I occasionally listen to digital files, but 90% of the time this system in vinyl.
  12. Thanks for the heads up. I searched my local classifieds and found a pair of Dahlquist M-905's for $40.00, ad said one tweeter not working. Drivers are almost exactly the same dimensions, and the cabinet isn't far off. I went for a look and checked the fuse in the back, sure enough the fuse for the tweeter was blown. I said, I'll take them, and ran by radio shack on the way home and spent a couple bucks on a pack of fuses. I got home, popped the fuses in, hooked them up to my old NAD 7020 receiver and they sing quite nicely. Actually, I've taken a little bit of a liking to these and now am hesitant to make the swap. So, I've basically added another pair of speakers to my home. Ona related note, I came across a decent Pioneer PL-41 turntable at my local record shop for $100. I saw that monstrous wooden plinth and desire set in. I started to think that I may be able to trade my very nice Thorens table for it, but then I thought, that's crazy and proceeded to throw Dark Side of the Moon on to prove my self wrong. Well, now I think I'm going to end up with a 3rd turntable...this hobby is ridiculous.
  13. Awesome idea! It looks like those may be gone, I put in a query. I knew matching the drivers and crossover to one another would be the trick but it had not occured to me to replace the internal from those of another speaker, thus all the engineering already worked out. I'll keep my eye out. Thanks!
  14. I'm no expert by any stretch, but I was faced with the same situation acouple years ago. I bought some cosmetically challenged Cornwalls, raw birch with some chips in the plywood edges. I ended up deciding on a cheap refinish and swapping out the mid horn. I went with Dave Harris' Fastrac, used the supplied router template, sanded the cabinets, applied a red mahogany stain, and a couple coats of satin Deft. They still have the B2 crossovers with new sonicaps from Crites. I am powering them with a refurbished Scott 299C and couldn't be happier (for anywhere close to the money spent anyway).
  15. Hello all, I've been toying around with an idea for a project for a while now, maybe you guys can help or let me know if this will be a waste of time and money. I have an old pair of Sansui bookshelf speakers that were given to me, Model SP50. The sound is pretty lousy but I like the asthetics, as does my wife, so my idea is to put modern drivers and crossover in the cabinets. They are two-ways with an 8" woofer and a small horn (at least that is what they call it)tweeter. External dimensions are roughly 20"x13"x10", ported enclosure. I will be using these in a spare bedroom where I have an excersice bike set up. I am powering them with a Dayton DTA 100A 50 watt chip amp, and will be connected to my laptop headphone out for movies and music while riding the bike. The bike is fairly loud so output is a concern, though we're certainly not talking concert levels. My main goal is clear, easily understandable dialog, but I do want decent sounding music in case I repurpose these in the future. I know these speakers will never sound great (that's what my cornscalas are for) so I'm not looking to sink a lot of money into these things, let's say no more than $200, less being preferable. So, I'm looking for suggestions for drivers and crossovers that will likely mate well with these enclosures. Any ideas? Thanks, Adam
  16. Good to know. Thanks Bruce! Looks like I may start planning for some woofers in the not too distant future. That's the great thing about this forum, I started this thread trying to decide if a new crossover or a phono cartridge would be my next logical step in better sound but after some very sound input I'm looking in a different direction all together.
  17. Thanks Chris. I just took some measurements. I'm not sure about the quality of my meter because the measurements were not very consistent with repeated measuring. There seems to be anaverage of around 5.9 in woofer, and 6.2 in the other. Does this seem inline with what a K33 should measure? Fwiw, one woofer is a K33 round magnet, the other is a K33E square magnet. I wonder if there is any difference in the sound of the two? It is not obvious when rotating the balance right to left. Both tweeters are K77M square magnets, and both sqaukers and K51V's, so I have considered getting Crites' cast or stamped woofers so all drivers match. However, I'd hate to shell out the money and get no improvement in sound.
  18. Chris, Thans for the reply. I've got the backs off of my cornwalls and the woofers disconnected from the crossover but I'm not sure what setting to use on my multi meter. There are a few settings for ohm measurement but when I connect to the leads the numbers jump around pretty eratically. I am wondering if this is due to the wrong values selected or maybe a lead from my meter has a short?
  19. Thanks for the input all. I've got some really good info to go on. I've followed your advise and checked all speaker connections and confirmed speakers are in phase using 2 sepperate test records. Then I began to experiment with speaker placement and toe-in. Speakers are now about 65 inches apart (inside to inside) and toed-in the slightest bit down stream from the listener's position. This had a HUGE effect on imaging. I've now got a very tangible image centered between the speakers. Upon playing some test LP's again, I was amazed to find that the (perceived) difference in output was also far less, with my balance control nearly set to center. What a surprise. Many thanks for the great input. I've got a much better sounding system with no cash output thanks to all of your input. There is one thing that has bugged me since purchasing the speakers that may play a part in my imaging... The previous owner had one of the woofers reconed. I've heard of other forum members who have had their K33's reconed only to find out the new voice coil to be 8 ohm rather than the correct 4 ohm. Any of you guys know how I can test this?
  20. Greg, I have tried to compensate for the decreased right channel output with the amp's balance adjustment using test records for channel output. Is this an effective means to remedy the issue? It just occured to me that output difference could possibly be my room, not the amplifier's output. Does that sound reasonable to you guys? I've got family in town for the weekend so I'll have to wait a couple days to really play with toe-in and room acoustics but I had a small opportunity to toe-in the speakers and play some music at a moderate volume and the initial improvement is encouraging. I am looking forward to spending more time with this.
