The McIntosh has all XLR and RCA outputs but if I were to do a xlr-rca binding 1&3 this may damage the output of the Mac if feeding a rca amplifier from the xlr output?

Yea I don't know the circuits in your Mac. I would not tie pins 1 and 3 together on any XLR OUTPUT that I did not know the circuit topology.

Xilica output to rca I out of tube amp.  Should I determinate the cables binding those pins?   No harm?

Yes no harm. But tie the wires on pins 1 and 3 of the XLR output AT the RCA connector at the input to your amp.

I don't think you will gain much by doing so other than being able to use them with pro gear.  They will also lose their value on the open market.

They're already hot rodded. I bought them off EBay a few years back. I have more time and money in them than the used units cost off of EBay. After all this is a hobby, right? I even got a hold of a guy in Australia that made new circuit boards for the remote control receiver board that actually work!  Why would switchable modes, balanced or unbalanced detract from their value? Just cuz its not stock?

  3. Again I know for a fact that the Xilica output on pin 3 is just the signal ground through an impedance that matches the impedance of output on pin 2. Thus making it a balanced output. Tying this to ground on the RCA connector end will not damage the Xilica's output.

So I've briefly chime in here because I am in the same boat and have been doing some research.

According to some sources, it may not be advisable to BIND pins one and three together as this may cause damage to the output of the preamp or xilica.

Instead, a safer route is to float pin 3 ( dont solder anything to it) and just solder the shield (pin 1) directly to the barrel of the RCA Connector.

Please give a link to "some sources"

  4. Hi All,

Starting the process of pulling apart my 2 dbx 4bx dynamic range expanders to add balanced I/O. Just wondering if there is any interest here of me taking pictures along the way. I went through these units a couple winters ago and changed out most of the opamps, VCAs, RMS level detectors and almost all the caps.

  6. On a different note. Having a few people over today for a late lunch/early dinner. Then we're headed over to a small outside venue close to my house to see an Elton John tribute band. Should be lots of fun. I will serve my world famous spice rubbed roasted chicken breast and garlic and whole peppercorn stuffed tri tip roast. Both cooked on the green egg outside, its too dang hot to cook indoors. Cheers all.

My wife went to Houston last weekend.  While she was there she stopped at her favorite Liquor chain store Total Wine.  She picked up a bottle of Blue Ice vodka for me.  I've never had it.  The label says American made potato vodka and I can't wait to get it crack a lackin in my shaker.blue-ice-american-potato-vodka.jpg

So when might that be? What's the hold up?

    Hello everyone.

Can I use one sub with both the stereo amplifier and av receiver? The sub has two inputs: L/LFE and R and I plan on plugging the amps into one input each. Providing that only one amplifier will be working at any given time, will this setup work? To be honest I did not notice any difference at all when I plug my av receiver to L or R input, both of them are under influence of low pass filter.

Thank you for your replies in advance.

Plug a stereo AMPLIFIER into the line input of a sub?

So it is not carrying any signal just blocking outside things....but in order to do that it has to be connected to something at both ends.

I tried to explain in a previous post about keeping the inter chassis currents and signal currents separate by the way we connect our cables. The shield if connected properly is carrying only the inter chassis currents between the units. It is also draining off any electrostatically induced currents to some degree determined by the shield's effectiveness. Different cable types have shields of different effectiveness(a whole 'nother subject). Did you get a chance to read the AES seminar document that I posted a link to in a previous post? Mr. Whitlock explains this much better than I could ever hope to. He has devoted a great part of his life to understanding, explaining and disseminating this knowledge. He uses science and physics not snake oil and voodoo. I know pretty scary huh:)

As far as modifying settings in the Xilica I am just getting started like you. But I really do not have much time to do this until winter. So far I'm just using settings from ChrisA.

Is it actually shielding/blocking something like interference? If so why would it need to be soldered up to anything?

Sorry I did not see this yesterday or I skimmed right over it. The short answer is YES a properly terminated(connected) shield is at least partially SHIELDING the inner conductor(s) from electrical fields. And yes if it was not connected it would be ineffective.

I called  customer service to report my wife’s complaint that the brew is weak and wastes coffee.  BUNN sent, at no charge, two alternative “reduced flow” spray heads for our BXB.  Gotta love the customer service.  I’ll report back with the results.

The replacements are shown. These old eyes can’t discern any difference.  I’ll try both.  FYI, that Old English “D” is on Alan Trammell’s cap.

Trammell is a bit young for you, no?:P This might be more your speed. I used to caddy at Meadow Brook Country Club. I dragged Bill Freehan's clubs around for 18. Jim Northrup and another guy from the 1967 team was in the foursome along with the CClub member. Can't remember the 3rd Tigers name. Bill Freehan was a beast. Good tipper too. Actually he was a very nice guy. Lots of people hardly talk to the caddy, Bill was personal, friendly and an all around good guy.

    D-E-E-T-R-O-I-T:)

I used to deliver papers for the Free Press in the wee early morning hours when I was knee high to a grasshopper.

Detroit is a nice place to be----from.

Maybe I'm mixing things up that I've read. Is it a true statement that on the EQ side of things (which I'm not messing with yet) when trying to flatten the curve it is better to bring peaks down then dips up?

Since I can't just hit Chris up for a Jube export to import on my end, what should my next steps be? If not painfully obvious yet, I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing with an active crossover. Lots to learn and fun so far.

Files will have an extension .XDAT. Store them on your computer in a new directory of your choice. I call mine "Xilica Files" Imagine that:). Do you have the XConsole App. up and running? And are you connected to the crossover? I am assuming you are. If so you will be able to open the .XDAT file and download to the crossover. Then store it in the crossover so you don't have hook up your computer all the time.
