I am not fooling myself that I am saving the planet, I am just saving few hundred dollars per month, while getting used to what's coming in the future.

My goal is, to be off the grid totally in few years.

If enough people aim for the same goal, that would be a planet saving plan.

The shocker for many people who purchased Solar with subsidies, is when the Grid goes down, their Solar shuts down.

The agreement for selling to the Utility your surplus electricity, requires that your system shuts down when the grid is down.

    So it's not a substitute nor a back-up.

I suspect that this is why the fellow in OK, that I mentioned, did his own build to power his AC and took no subsidies nor sold to the grid.

I think he used a few truck batteries with his inverter to smooth things out.

I have seen similar set ups using water powered generation, some with recycled NZ washing machines rewired, that power the house with some batteries. No reason you couldn't heat or freeze a block of water or cement to maintain temp at night.

Don't thermal houses have thick cement floors that are heated by direct sunlight in daytime so they stay warm at night. Huge S windows, other directions have walls covered with dirt and sod for thermal coupling to the earth. Totally passive.

I think I would still want a good wood-coal stove for the really cold and dangerous times of year. And a NG or diesel back up generator.  you can't be too cautious when it comes to freezing to death.

I have a condo where solar has been installed a few years ago.  No assessments for it.  As Bubo pointed out, each case must be assessed on its own merits.  There is no generic conclusion that it either works or it doesn't.

It always comes down to the specifics.  In my other place, solar does not make sense for me because of all the shade I have created in 35 years of stewardship.  Others in the same neighborhood have installed and benefited.  As for the future, better technology will lead to better solutions.

I watched a vid of a guy in OK if I recall correctly.

He did his own solar build in the small fenced back yard

and had it planned and wired to either 2-3 window AC units

no connection to the grid or the rest of the house.

His goal was keeping the house at 72-75 on 100 degree days which he achieved.

Apparently this was most of his electric bill

Mine flips to NG in winter as electric use drops way down. Ice Cold IL

No reason you couldn't switch the cells to running some electric radiators in the winter to supplement the central heat during the daytime.

Solar is gonna take off in a few years .

    - Perovskite Solar Cells  will be much lighter  ,   versus  silicon panels - Perovskite Solar Cells  have a potential  of 45% efficiency versus 20 % for silicon cells ,

Who is making them, are they selling stock ?

You call mining rare earth metals and their toxic disposal sustainable? Learn what it's like to mine Lithium and come back to us. Our own leader helped China get the largest Cobalt mine in the hands of Chinese. You call being stuck having to purchase batteries from China "sustainable"?

I'm sure you have heard of supply and demand before? What happens when everyone in the USA is required to own an EV? The price of these rare earth metals will become even more expensive since the demand will only increase. Price will not go down, it will only go UP.

We produce and refine the world cleanest fossil fuels. We have vasts amounts of these natural resources right here in our land. We should be pumping and refining as much as possible while we are still using crude for means of energy. We should be exporting as much as we can to Europe so they don't need Russia or Opec+. This has multiple benefits for us and them. It will greatly help stop funding Russia's wars. We won't take advantage of our own resources while we go and beg hostile foreign adversaries for their oil which makes us the biggest laughing stock on Earth. We are going around begging for something that we already have right below are feet. It makes ZERO sense. Especially since our sweet crude is far better than their sour sulfur filled crude, our oil and refining is actually the greener and more environmentally responsible oil.

We can never fully go to EV's, it's impossible. Solar/wind will never replace our regular means of power generation, it can't. Until we have other avenues we are stuck with oil/coal which is fine as long as it's done responsibly.

Almost the entire US is sitting on a Lake of NG, oil and Coal.

Solar has applications in the South and Southwest, and Islands or remote areas, same for wind.

The internet has probably cut emissions by more than anything, enabling home businesses more than ever.

EVs may be usable in urban areas but in the burbs and rural areas not, in the cold batteries are 50% or less of their rating, so you can't drive far.

Batteries have to be charged with something, coal, hydro and nukes.

I believe the US would need to increase electric generation by between 3-5 times or more to charge cars and we don't have enough generation now.

Elect is going up so charging EVs is going up. They also contribute zero for the streets they drive on another subsidy from all other vehicles of any kind. No subsidies, no sales.

  5. Fuses don't blow for no reason.

Short in the speaker or wires could blow the fuse.

Inspect the pre amp tube, maybe a new one is in order.

Open the unit first and look for brown spots, melted insulation, lose connectors or wires etc.

ensure the solder joints are good and no capacitor leaks or shorts between components from extra solder.

  6. Application specific.

Like Wind turbines, and EVs no subsidies no sales.

A bigger problem is that none of these are recyclable with lots of toxic waste.

Remote Island, sure wind and solar make sense.

Next door to to a nuke, no way.

Well here is a blast from past:

The British Invasion or just Rock wiped out the Quartets and Harmonizing.

Hollies were great and CSNY may have been the last of Popular Quartets, minus the retro groups like Boys to Men etc.

    Studio Outtakes interesting

Voices Isolated no auto tune, min reverb

This one popped up on auto play while I was making the post... Guess it wanted to be heard too.

Rolled out this morning and needed a fix w/my coffee.  Live @ the Fillmore West?  Saw this and started wondering where my long sleeve #1 purple staff Jersey is.  Last time I saw it I just laffed.  NO way could I even think about putting it on.  Two arms maybe but the rest?  Soooo not happening.  Wonder how much some skinny guy would pay for it?  lol  Oh well.

    Seeing this I started over-thinking again.  😂

Some great groups passed thru both the NY & SFran venues back in the day.

The Byrds?  Not too shabby if you ask me.  :)

    :)

Three min radio edits seldom reveal the greatness of some of the bands, definitely not pop radio.

    I may have missed it

but what kind of music are you listening to ?

Some photos of your room and gear would also be helpful.

FWIW IMHO Klipsch has the best reproduction of the human voice

no speaker is better at everything than every other speaker

Heresys on end tables puts the mids at ear level, and the woofer slightly below

    yielding the best human voice.

With the Heresy's and LaScalas a tight articulated sub does fill a void at the bottom

Get a good 100W ch class AB used surround receiver, and use the auto correct and auto EQ for the room

$100 should get you a Pioneer Elite or good Yamaha. 10 years old for a unit is fine, I like the THX rated Pioneer Elites for the application.

Gary has been a cornucopia of good advice above.

    My two cents

  12. I take zero pills other than a vitamin

I check no boxes on the medical form profiles. No bleeding gums etc.....

60's, walk a mile per day, ride a bike 10 miles weather permitting, can bench my weight 250lbs

would rather be lifting 210 lbs..... maybe someday

Have no difficulty walking 3-5 miles

The human body is made to perform physical work

    and lots of walking.

    If you don't walk,

    • you don't have an immune system,
    • and moving food through the digestive process becomes much more difficult.
    • Your sinovial joints aka knees don't get lubricated and fed, reducing mobility
    • You don't burn your calories, and the body stores the energy as fat.
    • You don't metabolize the toxins in your body
    • Likely you don't get enough sunlight to function properly
    • A mile a day after dinner seems to be sufficient, a minimum std.

The primary solvent used in the body is water, lots of it.

Soft drinks, fruit juice, and alcohol are unnatural to the diet and place stress on the liver and kidneys

    Cigarettes are poison

IMHO the more processed the food, the less you benefit

The mental health and social aspect of cooking, socializing in the kitchen area, and preparing the food can not be under estimated.

Sugar is a heavily processed food that tastes good, damn them !

Growing herbs is easy as are veggies such as Kale which produces like crazy once on line.

Fruit, veggies, herbs are necessary for the digestive tract to function properly

If you are performing physical work or sports, carbs seem essential to me.

Unprocessed foods that taste good, generally are good, the reverse is true.

    My two cents

Early digital had a greater quantization error, and was clipped or compressed to fit the CD limits 20Khz top end.

MP3 is the wholesale slaughter with psycho acoustics added in for the missing music....

If you have a quality analog recording, and digitally encode it at high bit rates, the quantization saw tooth is certainly much less pronounced, although even with in finite processing speed will always be there.

The encoding and decoding algorithms also vary greatly in their effect.

It would be interesting to measure the frequencies above the CD limit on one of their vinyl records to see what is there.....

I believe an analog master encoded with current state of the art hardware and software, can sound as good or better than pure vinyl.

The truth in labeling remains a requirement..

    Is Music getting worse?

    not necessarily.

Different frequencies create different effects in the brain depending the the desired effects. This has been studied extensively and is well understood.

Brainwave entrainment, also referred to as brainwave synchronization or neural entrainment, refers to the observation that brainwaves (large-scale electrical oscillations in the brain) will naturally synchronize to the rhythm of periodic external stimuli, such as flickering lights,[1] speech,[2] music,[3] or tactile stimuli.

As different conscious states can be associated with different dominant brainwave frequencies,[4] it is hypothesized that brainwave entrainment might induce a desired state. Researchers have found, for instance, that acoustic entrainment of delta waves in slow wave sleep had the functional effect of improving memory in healthy subjects.[5]

General Concepts and Formal Models of Entrainment by a Periodic External Drive

One property of oscillating elements commonly found in nature is that they are self-sustained and dynamic (e.g., Glass, 2001; Pikovsky et al., 2003). Such oscillators can be perturbed by an external force. If this force is periodic, the natural oscillation may then become synchronized to the periodic event. Synchronization here means that the oscillating element starts to cycle with the same period as the external force. Or in other terms, the oscillator becomes entrained or locked to the external event. In this context, synchronization, entrainment, and locking are synonymous1 (Pikovsky et al., 2003). We will use the term entrainment to denote synchronization to a rhythmic stream (or train) of external events.

  15. In this order, isolate the problem:

Inspect the cabinets for defects or leaks.

Try reversing the speaker wires LR RL

If the problem moves, it's the amp, pre amp or source

    Eliminate the crossovers

Disconnect and test OHMs  for each driver and write down the numbers

Driver numbers should be nearly identical by type, tweeter, woofer, mid horn

Remove and swap the crossovers, and see if the problem moves with the crossover

If the problem is in the crossovers, test each component and write down the numbers.

Or just throw new crossover in .........

Unfortunately there isn’t really a link. If you built the stock amp camp in the diy chassis you have to modify the chassis and power wiring to be able to use an external power supply.

I use CapMX PSU boards created by Jason Keutemann and boards designed by Rudi Ratlos on DiyAudio. I build my own external power supply or incorporate the PSU and toroidal transformer into a single or two different amps (for Monoblocks). I have also tried a CRC (capacitor, resistor, capacitor) recommended by Nelson and it also sounds very nice. The walnut amp that just sold I built with the CRC and the Klipsch member that bought it sent me a video and he is REALLY enjoying it with his Heresy 3.

The stock amp camp 2U Dissipante chassis is too small to incorporate a good PSU and torroidal which is why an external PSU is a MUST.

The growing list of projects I would like to do....

If you could post the Bills of material

and links for replicating your projects

    it would be helpful

A lot of my project time gets sucked into

Crawling around in attics in 150F changing failed exhaust motors

and blowing the cottonwood seeds out of the clogged vents.

New carburetor for a Lawn boy 4 Stroke arrived yesterday, so did the rain.

Cleaning AC units and replacing the capacitors........

    etc etc etc ............

You may want to make a new Topic for your favorite projects

    My 2 cents .......
