Been Lurking for some time now. I had a lower end system that I bought about 13 years ago. And because of this forum I decided it’s time for a new system. I keep hearing (reading) all great things about the Forte III. Earlier this week I made a 6 hour round trip to listen and possibly buy some Forte III. After just a few minutes of listening I knew these were the ones. Even my wife was impressed and she usually doesn’t care about stuff like this. Then of course i had to get a new receiver so I decided on a Denon AVR X3500H (plenty of a receiver for me). This system will hopefully last me a very long time. Next will be a new tv. My tv is about 15 years old but we don’t watch enough tv to justify getting one any time soon. We have never had cable or satellite. We do occasionally rent a movie. We just have music as background noise 24/7. Anyways thanks to this forum for leading me in the right direction.

I’m giving my old system to my son. He just got his first apartment and is very excited. 😜 Old system: Pioneer 5960, Synergy F2’s,  RC52 and a couple of Klipsch 12”sub.

    Ha! Congrats!

Thanks for posting. Pics soon please.

Klipsch needs to start handing out some commission to this forum!

I have used the smaller 10" version of the Ultimax several times. This one keeps up with my Hersey with 250 wpc plate amp. The 15" with your amp should be able to keep up with your LS (to a point).

Thats a pretty beefy 10". Nice.

    Ultimax kit

The Kits only include driver & cabinet. You will need to buy a terminal cup, screws, stuffing and wire to complete the basic build.

I mention a terminal cup because i don't recommend installing the amplifier in the cabinet.

I think I might give this a shot.

Wish i had better news for you.

I have done much testing with many models (big, small & multiples of them) and have come to the conclusion i recommended to you and others.

Save your $$$ and do it right the first time.

Good advise. I know you know. 👍

I cant do it right in my current room. Its one of the big reasons my budget is what it is. I don't want to invest very much doing it wrong.

  6. In seriousness though I cant do it (horn) in this set up. I was thinking about it... but near field is pretty much my only good spot for location in this room (you mentioned near field isn't great for a horn sub).

The kit mentioned earlier or the Ultimax 15" kit ?

The 15" Ultimax kit is fine.

The HO kit if you could substitute the HF series driver is OK.

I'm just not a fan of sealed subs unless you have a bunch of them.

    I like ported too.

This would be used for 25-50hz range. Near field like a few ft away (right behind me). Im using a cheap 10" polk sub atm. Works great for low levels. But then disappears pretty fast when I turn up the LaScalas.

What do you like about this over the 15" kit?

An 800 watt plate amp?  Heck yes!

I strongly suggest you measure first how big that SVS sledge amp is.  Make sure it will fit in the back of the 3.0 cuft flat pack.  My Yung 500 seemed a perfect fit, you can find the specs on PE.

Idk I probably would leave it out. Build/buy a box to put it in.

No, you would at least need a jigsaw.

I have one but thats a tad past what I would want to do. Assemble/glue/screws lol.

Any other ideas? I know my budget makes it a bit tough.

I own the Reference 15.  It has a 3 cuft sealed box with the RSS390 HO, which does indeed stand for High Output.  I use a Yung SD500 w/bass boost.  If you go sealed you need a 6 db bass boost at 35 Hz.  Not needed for ported.  The HO does not dig as deep as the Umax 15 but I like the upper part of the sub-bass better and for my tastes I don't really care about 20 Hz or under.  I use an Inuke 3000dsp to power a pair, 600 wpc.  I prefer the Reference 15.

It's a phenomenal sub.  I find it very musical (NOT BOOMY for those of you immediately shouting at your screens "THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A MUSICAL SUB IT EITHER REPRODUCES BASS CORRECTLY OR IT DOESN'T!!!), it adds a very realistic sound and punch for the lowest octave when used with my CF-4's, effectively turning them from 2-way speakers to a 3-way speaker system.  A piano SOUNDS like a piano, the sub adds that bottom end to the range, with authority.

I saw where @jason str disagreed with the use of the HO sub driver.  I would not argue with him as I consider him an authority, he knows his stuff.  However if Jason looked at the specs I can understand how he could have come to that conclusion (as Did @Emile who went his own way with a different sub driver from mine and he is quite pleased with his sound).

Regardless of the specs the Reference 15 sounds great but I would recommend at least 500 watts (it tops out at 800).

That's my experience and I'm sticking to it.  B)

If I used the svs pb12 plus sledge amp. I could use one of the peqs to most 35hz i think. Do you think this amp would work well? With that sub?
