  1. Svs!! Upgrading my whole system. In addition to sub getting Oppo 103, Emotiva umc200 and xpa5

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    congrats what did you buy?

he bought the new flagship sb-18 ultra!! LOL or the sb-13 ultra. one of the two

Ha ha, an 18 would be one heavy beast of a sub.

  2. Wow those look awesome Schu, I'm jealous! I've been using some ALK Cornscala Walls in mine but those have got me thinking, lol. I was thrilled with the ones Dean built for my La Scalas, what a huge improvement, so I'm wondering if I would see much of a difference with a set of those over my ALK's in my Cornwalls. This hobby is so fun but costly. :D

  3. I'll be done with them by tomorrow night. I probably won't ship until Monday though -- I don't want to risk having these things sitting in a UPS truck over the weekend.

I'm trying to decide what to send around. Al builds the CornScala-Wall, and that might be a good one to send around -- I'm sure he'd do it if I asked. I personally tend to like the old first order designs with stuff like the paper in oils and Jupiters. I suppose I'm willing to do that, but I just don't have the loose change for that right now -- it would probably have to wait until Spring.

I'm certainly not in any hurry. I'd just like to find out if any of the aftermarket crossovers will be noticeable to my ears in my application and if I can do that without spending $500-1000 up front.. awesome. Even Al's $300ish Cornscala-walls would suffice as a test. I'm really happy with these stock B-2 networks, so just curious what sort of improvement is even possible.

I bought a set of Al's Cornscala-walls and they made a huge difference, I really love them!

  4. Yep, looks like fresh shipping damage. I once bought an amp form forum member Rusty Melton. It took me about 20 minutes with a box cutter to actually get to the amp. I think the amp could have survived a drop off my roof. It was padded, boxed, padded and boxed again. He did a great job.

That's one poor packing job for sure, i would be mad about that and also that the amp doesn't work.

Ha ha Carl, I don't know much but I can box the crap out of audio gear. I bought a Technics SL 1200 off of ebay and it said mint and and in original box, when it arrived it was in the original box....without any padding of any type, just loose in there. Some people should never sell anything that has to be shipped!

  5. I bought one of Scrappydue's SVS PB 13 Ultra's and it blends very very well with my La Scalas, it totally smoked the Sunfire that I had. I don't think two sunfires like I had could come close to matching it's output. I've had several friends over that couldn't tell that there was a sub being used, I can't even pinpoint it's location in the room with my eyes shut. It may be no match for a horn loaded sub but it's strong and very enjoyable and I didn't have to do anything but go pick it up and plug it in.

glad to hear you are still enjoying that baby rusty. Hope you hang out to that badboy the long haul. I miss them big cherry boxes in my living room. Hopefully I can learn to veneer soon. Then I can get my new project looking pretty

If I had 4 18's I doubt I would worry about the veneers, lol. I'm hanging on to it until it doesn't work anymore, I really love it! For me it was the perfect fit, I'm not a real bass head but it fills in the bottom end just like I like it. It's strong and blends in so well in my setup, and it looks so darned nice....I smile every time I look at it, lol.

  7. Just curious who all on the forum is from Arkansas. I am in central Arkansas myself. Actually I am about 4 miles from the geographical center of the state, so very much central Arkansas!

All right now... What the heck else can we do for you....

    hillbillies-1.gif

(You had to know this was coming at some time.... lol....)

That looks more like backwoods Kentucky!!

To be fair, it also looks like it came from the Ovilla area.....

Ha ha, those people lived just 3 miles from where I live, seriously. That was out of the Hillbilly calender that they used to print when I was a kid in the 70's, pretty cool to see it again!

  8. Thank you Cameron for the write up, really nice. I know you've been very helpful to me with your advice and it's really appreciated, probably saved me a bunch of cash because I didn't have to do all of the experimenting that you've done to find something that really worked well to my ears. I know that after I sent the ones that Dean is sharing with everyone to the next guy, that's when it set in just how darned good they sounded. I'm really anxious to get them from him when he gets them done because the cornscala walls just don't cut it in the La Scalas like I thought they did before I tried his out.

  9. Does the receiver even power up anymore? When I have had problems with a receiver... Sometimes I have just found to leave it unplugged overnight to make sure all the circuits have completely drained. I know it is most likely overkill but it has worked when leaving it unplugged for a short period of time has not. Double check to make sure the receiver didn't blow the fuse again or possibly have another fuse somewhere that has also blown. I hope this helps you.

The fuse is exactly the same type and value... Correct?

the receiver powers up,but then displays "protecting" for a few seconds then power down...fuse is same value (fast blow 6.3 amp) and is still working

I had a Denon reciever that did the same thing, it was right after a rain and I figured lightning ran in on it. I took it to two different repair shops and neither of them got it fixed. I hope you have better luck than I did figuring it out.

  10. Hi Rusty,

As of yesterday there are only two choices. I will build these with either the Mundorf oil filled polypropylenes or with the VH Audio OIMP V-caps. The former is affordable, the latter is not. :-) I don't advertise the V-cap build, no need to really, everyone always asks if I'll do it and what it costs. For information on why I decided to do this and for pricing info on the Mundorf build, just head over to the products page of my website. Simply put, only 1 in 5 were interested in the economy build, and after one guy said if he didn't like it he would just send it back to have the capacitors upgraded -- I decided to drop the build. If all I do is expensive, people say I'm too expensive. When I offer something affordable, nobody wants it. I have two right now who bought the economy version wondering if they should have taken it to the next level. What I have finally figured out is that people don't come to me for "cheap", they come to me for something better than good. I think I'm okay with that.

Dean I want a cheap set....;)

Craig, I was about to say the same thing, he bait and switched me........I was to eager, lol.
  11. Craig,

I've got a set of La Scalas, with Crites woofers and Crites tweeters and a set of Dave Harris wood horns. I first used the crossovers that were in them, vintage 1977 and they really didn't sound very good, and since have been using the Cornscala_Wall economy Universal's that had been in my Cornwalls. I know that they weren't really made for La Scalas but have been using them until I could decide on what I want to use with the La Scalas. To be honest the economy universals sound pretty good in them, but Deans really pull away once you start to apply a little more power to them. I'm looking forward to playing around with them a little more.

Dean, when you get a chance send me your phone number so I can talk to you about the different choices you offer in them.

  12. Just a quick update, at the first setting that Dean recommended that I start at they sound very impressive! I'm a buyer for sure, now to decide how much I want to spend. [Y] Drink the kool-aid folks, it's very good stuff, lol. Nice work Dean and thanks again for the chance to try them out. I can't wait to try out some more settings but for a day or so I'm just going to soak it in as is.

  13. Gezzzz get busy and don't drop by this thread for a couple days and what happens...Erik and Dean start a love fest. Mark is proven to overreact insulting half the forum about something that was never even pointed at him.

THIS THREAD HAS TURNED INTO COMPLETE BS ......um ducking for cover Wink

Well to try and get this thread back on track, the crossovers arrived here today! I played them briefly but am about ready to set in with them for a bit and maybe play with the settings on the taps. On first listen they seem a bit layed back and maybe the volume seems a bit lower, but to be honest my amp was not warmed up at all before it tried them. I'm very anxious to give them a long listen.

Thank you Dean for the chance to try these out for nothing, seriously it doesn't get any better than that!

  14. The grills on the verticals cover the motorboard. To change the grill cloth you have to take the back off and remove the screws from the inside that hold the motorboard to the cabinet. There is no removeable grill as in pull on, pull off.

Not to mention the 1000 staples that hold them on, staples must have been very cheap, lol.
