  1. Hello Does anybody have a copy of the original crossover schematic ElectroVoice proposed for their T35 tweeter ? Since they are plenty of t35 version of crossover points on this forum but none coming from EV, I thought it might be helpfull to have one. thank you george
  2. Good Evening, quite interested as a reading this Thesis especially if we judge it from the physics point of you. Still on all these analysis of this article but also on similar ones, I think we "forgot" to take into account the inefficiency or particuliarity of the human ear. A scientific measurement is always valid but the actual oral results depends a lot on our ears. So when I observe the response curves for both the exponential/tractrix horns and see how close these curves are (maybe 10-20% difference) I am not at all sure, if I would fold an hypothetical responce of a human ear, that I could here a noticeable difference. Also all these curves have no error bars so it might be that "within errors" they are quasi the same. So before tearing apart your exp horns ( me included) I would investigate a little bit more. Just to emphasise again, my comments are not implying at all that this fine thesis is inaccurate the least. It is the human factor that is hard to quantize. regards george
  3. I mean these people reply to emails, study the questions, provide info, thoughts and imagine I only have a nth-hand Cornwall speaker pair. Never bought anything new from them. Is that wonderfull ? ...Especially if you leave in Europe...
  4. Hi I plan to built on top of the cornwall a housing ala Khorn and move everything out of the cornwall (I mean the mid+ev35+crossover). So ti could fit since my speakers already sits on two corners it could be ideal. thank you george
  5. Hello, I am looking for the dimensions or plans for the k-400 mid horms from the LaSCala/Khorn speakers. I am planning to give it atry and built them myself to replace the ones found on the Cornwall speakers. Since I leave in Europe pricing for original or vintage parts are too expensive for me thank you george
  6. Hi The woofer is connected directly to the Nakamichi. The mid-high are kept connected to their physical crossover and then I connect this output to the Nakamichi. In practice I disconected the woofer completely inside the cabinet and the coil that goes with it and installed an additional Cardas pair for the woofer only. The original speaker lugs are the mid-high output this way. the woofer coil is not connected to anything. cheers george
  7. Hello, Since family left on vacations I decided to run some tests on my Cornwalls (1976) using different configurations as front-end. The reason for the mess I will describe is that I am always wondering on the benefit of Hi-Sensitivity speakers as the Cornwalls couple to low or high power amps. The set up was : Cornwalls 1976 all original except capacitors changed to Oil Jensen. Amps : Fisher 100 monoblocks ( around 40W, EL37 tubes) Scott 299A stereo (2x18w, 7189 tubes) Active xovers : Nakamici automotive EC-100 units ( 1 per channel ). SACD Sony for source. First I plugged the Scott. As I was expecting it, tight bass very nice mid-high. Sweet. After 1-2 days I plugged the Fisher in. Immediately it heard like they were 4-5 times more instruments playing at the same time. Impressive low freq (not present with the Scott). Crisp highs. Very pleasant. On the otherhand it was impossible to turn the volume more than 2-3 without having to invite the whole neigberhood for a listening. Uncomfortable.. Ok, to me that donnot means the the Scott is a lesser amp than the Fisher. I tend to believe that it is more of a "problem" of the Cornwall's 98db efficiency. With low amp you are more relaxed in the soune reproduction but you are missing the pleasant low end. I guess thats the reason why the mid-high sounds better. With Hi-power amps you have everything but then it is very loud. So you have to turn it down. Either not so satisfactory. So as a final test I plugged a pair of Nakamichi EC-100 x-overs. I like a lot these units. They are using separate extrenal power units. I used the Fisher 100 for the Woofer ( bypassing the any in-speaker element) and the Scott for the rest (keeping the built-in speaker). Since the Fishers have potentiometers I could adjust for the sound level. I could simply say that I will stay with this setup. It can give any combination you like for the occasion. And in anycase it sound always better than the single-amp solution. Much much better as a matter of fact. As music used, I played Organ music (J.S.Bach) and some brazilian CDs from Lenine ( known for very impressive recordings and low end response). cheers george
  8. Hi How about trying and replace all these modern type crossover capacitors (if your speakers are '84) with Oil ones. Definately the newer versions of Cornwall ( after 1980 ?!) used a different crossover unit with poly-something capacitors while back in the 70s they used oil caps. I had a pair of each 76 and 84 Cornwalls and the later were very bright ( I sold them). I exchange the original oil caps in my 76s with Jensen oil and I am very happy. I use tubes on the otherhand. cheers george
  9. Hi I owned for 4-5 months both a pair of Conrwall 1976 and a pair of Cornwall 1988. I kept the 1976. To my ears the 1988 were too crisp and Home-Theater sounding. In anycase quite different sound. I guess the Crossover has a major role to play on this. I imagine that if one matches the crossovers then they might sound similar.
  10. Hello, I donnot remember if I already have asked this question that always puzzle me but since everybody agrees, I think, that ported enclosures are much different that back-loaded horns, why Cornwall and Klipschorn/LaScala share the same woofer ?!? Which speaker is compromized ? Since in all catalogs EV/Altec/JBL etc it is always mentioned this woofer for Bass-Reflex that speaker for Horn-loaded etc there is somewhere something missing... thank you george
  11. Hello, I take it back, I thougth since when I bought all parts for my Cornwall ALKs it costs me 276$ for a pair (but I built them myself) which corresponds to around 200Euros buy now price of 450 is.... well anyway as you say its a free market. cheers georges
  12. Hi I just so that and I think they are overpriced or putting it another way I though one should not get money from someone else work. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3077983569&category=14968.
  13. Hi You separate the Woofer part from the rest on the speaker crossover. You run 2 wires that connect the woofer directly to the LF output amplifier. Meaning you donnot use the internal inductor of the woofer. You keep the original network on the mid/tweeter so you have to run 2 other wires from there to the HF output amplifier. Best is that the output of the amps or active crossover is variable for adjudting the level right. Im my Cornwalls I have installed double speaker lugs in the back t facilitate connections. I use a marantz tube crossover. Fine if you have spare amps or like the improvisation otherwise I was not extremely thrilled. In anycase it is easy to reconenct everything if you donnot like the result. cheers george
  14. Hi I leave in France and I have some parts for the ALK crossover the Cornwall version namly the inductors some of the capacitors. Let me know if inteested at georges.vasileiadis@gamum2.in2p3.fr
  15. Hi a year ago I did some extensive listing tests (and as it is the case with all these tests pretty personal results) with the following amps ( believe it or not ) Scott : 299A, 299B, 299C, 296 Fisher : 400C, 500C, 800 B,C, 100 monoblock, X-100, X-101, X-100-B Dyna : Stereo 70, Mark IV Sherwood : S-5000 (or similar) HK Citation II The speakers were a pair of each ( Bozaks, Mission, Klipsch ). Generally speaker nothing can beat a power amp against any reciever. From all the Fisher receivers the best sound (to our ears I insist) were the simpler one, 800B (1st incarnation), 400C. For power/intergrated amp the Fisher monoblocks 100 and Dyna ST-70 were clearly winners, while the 296 from Scott was laso a very nice amp. The HK Citation II is amazing but way more expensive than the lot. We separete the hearings regarding the power output of the amps since it plays a role also. The Scott 299A or B (1rev) are indeed very nice amps. These are the lower power output Scotts ( the 299B, 2nd rev and higher goes beyond 20W/ch and donnot sound so sweet). So with my Cornwalls I stick to my Fisher 400-CX pre and pair of 100 monoblocks since to my opinion nothing can bit power output. Otherwise I keep in a Scott 299 and a Fisher 800 B( with serial <10000) as backup. cheers george
  16. Hi I use Jensen Oil caps instead of the stock oil ones. Got them directly from Jensen. georges
  17. Hi again, Someone some messages up asked why to replace one oil capacitor with another. Well first I have to say that 2-3 years ago I had replace the stock capacitors on my Spendors BC1 with Hovland. I switch back in a week. They were too bright. SO when it came to the Klipsch crossover since the original unit was using oil capacitors in an era where you could find decent non-oil capacitors I thought (and still think) that I would give a try with the Jensen oil since I had a very nice experience with my Fisher 100 monoblocks when I recapped them with Copper/oil jensen (it was a night/day difference). Since I recap the one Cornwall with the Jensen and after the first impressions either I am starting to be used on the Jensen sound or whetever else but it is getting better eact day. It "rings" much less than the stock one give a sweeter sound. Still I am not sure that it is a 100% needed upgrade but I am getting more pleased with them. Also (and BTW) these Jensens have a orientation band on one side. I tried to contact Jensen in DK to ask about it but they never got back. Anybody with an idea on this?? thank you george ------------------ --------------------- Fisher 400-CX pre-amp Fisher 100 (EL37) monoblocks (3) Fisher 101R tuner Fisher 100-MPX Sony SCD-333ES Ampex 1260 reel to rell Garrard 401/SME3012R/Grado Speakers... -------------------------
  18. Hello thank you really very much. Been also a physicist helped me understand quite well the whole concept and explanation which I find very satisfactory and interesting. Humans are indeed wierd creatures. george ------------------ --------------------- Fisher 400-CX pre-amp Fisher 100 (EL37) monoblocks (3) Fisher 101R tuner Fisher 100-MPX Sony SCD-333ES Ampex 1260 reel to rell Garrard 401/SME3012R/Grado Speakers... -------------------------
  19. Hello, It might look easy to answer this question but let me pose it in a different sense : Both speakers are using the same components. For the Hi Freq the T35 is mounted roughly the same way on both For the Mids also, same horn, same driver, same mount. Now below 400-500Hz we have a folded horn against a ported design (even if they use the same woofer which for me is not understood since the concept is so different). Now why someone should be affect so much on what he/she hears in that region of 30-500Hz, against the 500-15KHz where the speakers are of the same concept ? I need to get that explained. Since as it is, it doesn't look so different to me ( always since they use the same components on both speakers). thank you george ------------------ --------------------- Fisher 400-CX pre-amp Fisher 100 (EL37) monoblocks (3) Fisher 101R tuner Fisher 100-MPX Sony SCD-333ES Ampex 1260 reel to rell Garrard 401/SME3012R/Grado Speakers... -------------------------
  20. Hello Yesterday evening I replaced the stock Aerovox oil capacitors to one of my Cornwall 1977. There are one 2 and ne 4 uf caps. The values I put in are 2.2uf (but after Jensen comments they measure very close to 2uF) and 3.9uF. I left the speaker play 12-15 hours up to now. I am not so impressed. Some of the high freq are not so profound (see missing) with the Jensen one. I will wait for a week if the brake-in is a true argument. Keep you inform george ------------------ --------------------- Fisher 400-CX pre-amp Fisher 100 (EL37) monoblocks (3) Fisher 101R tuner Fisher 100-MPX Sony SCD-333ES Ampex 1260 reel to rell Garrard 401/SME3012R/Grado Speakers... -------------------------
  21. Hi Some steps to do it : A. Disconnect completely the woofer from the crossover. Meaning that you have to have two wires going out from the woofer directly to the power amp. B. Disconect the woofer part on the crossover. Meaning isolate the two wires that are connected to the inductor. C. Leave everything else as is and have two wires coming out as part of the mid-tweeter combo that should stay as is in the crossover. Connect these wires to the power amp (for mids-hi). You need of course an active crossover between your pre-amp and the power amps at 6db, 600HZ. Like that it works fine with me. regards george ------------------ --------------------- Fisher 400-CX pre-amp Fisher 100 (EL37) monoblocks (3) Fisher 101R tuner Fisher 100-MPX Sony SCD-333ES Ampex 1260 reel to rell Garrard 401/SME3012R/Grado Speakers... -------------------------
  22. Hi It is kinda stupid question but I cannot figure out only from the specs hop much more spacial I'll need if I replace my Cornwalls with Khorns. Corners is not a problem to find. 23. Hi I tend to remember someone sometime mentioning that there was an article about bracing the Cornwall cabinets. 24. Hi Personally I think a better woofer choice is the old Electro-VOice 15WK. Great speaker.
