  1. Thanks Colter, for the info. I did do the site-wide search but apparently I missed some threads, I'll back and check the commercial section.

Never hang them from the top or sides? Well then, that's exactly what happened to the "sister" set of these KP-201's. I checked out the bar that they went into, and they are hanging from eyebolts, which are attached to the side of the cabinet. I didn't look to closely, but I don't think they were supported from underneath.

Maybe I should double-check that and maybe give the owner a word of caution?

  2. Ya, I remember seeing your 2320B. Didn't listen to it much but I figured if it was good enough for you, it was good enough for me. Plus, the fact that I *thought* I had a 2230 in the basement (which I didn't find, I think that I *gulp* threw it away) put me on the course of finding more Marantz for cheap.

I have checked a few pawn shops, and thrift stores around here, haven't found any gems yet there.

  3. Here is a link for a schematic for an Antique Sound Lab tube amp which would be an excellt choice for your 201`s or your KLF20.

Thanks, I'll check that amp out. - update: Wow, sweet specs (I think, LOL) on that amp. A little pricey in my world, but I'd sure like to hear one.

If I am not mistaken your 201`s have K79 tweeters in them. Pop one open and see if it has phenolic or Titanium diaphragm. Either way pull them and try them in your KLF20 tweeters. You will find the KLF20 have stock poly diaphragms and they will really sing with phenolic or better yet Titanium diaphragms. You can buy Ti diaphragms from Bob Crites for $30.00 each. Best regards Moray James.

Thanks much James, I have read here and there about some of those KLF-20 mods. I have never opened them up to check to see if they are the ones with the additional bracing\glue but I do mean to do that. I didn't know the price on the Ti 'phrams but at only $30 a pop, I'm all over that. I'll order a couple up and fix up those KLF-20's.

  4. I assume you all got this email also.

    Dear Jon,

I messed up. I owe you an explanation.

It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many
members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the
separation of DVD and streaming and the price changes. That was
certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology. Let me
    explain what we are doing.

For the past five years, my greatest fear at Netflix has been
that we wouldn't make the leap from success in DVDs to success in
streaming. Most companies that are great at something – like AOL
dialup or Borders bookstores – do not become great at new things people
want (streaming for us). So we moved quickly into streaming, but I
should have personally given you a full explanation of why we are
splitting the services and thereby increasing prices. It wouldn’t have
changed the price increase, but it would have been the right thing to
    do.

So here is what we are doing and why.

Many members love our DVD service, as I do, because nearly every
movie ever made is published on DVD. DVD is a great option for those
who want the huge and comprehensive selection of movies.

I also love our streaming service because it is integrated into
my TV, and I can watch anytime I want. The benefits of our streaming
service are really quite different from the benefits of DVD by mail. We
need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the
market evolves, without maintaining compatibility with our DVD by mail
    service.

So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are really
becoming two different businesses, with very different cost structures,
that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and
    operate independently.

It’s hard to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with
pride, but we think it is necessary: In a few weeks, we will rename
our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster”. We chose the name Qwikster
because it refers to quick delivery. We will keep the name “Netflix”
    for streaming.

Qwikster will be the same website and DVD service that everyone
is used to. It is just a new name, and DVD members will go to
qwikster.com to access their DVD queues and choose movies. One
improvement we will make at launch is to add a video games upgrade
option, similar to our upgrade option for Blu-ray, for those who want to
rent Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games. Members have been asking for video
games for many years, but now that DVD by mail has its own team, we are
finally getting it done. Other improvements will follow. A negative
of the renaming and separation is that the Qwikster.com and Netflix.com
    websites will not be integrated.

There are no pricing changes (we’re done with that!). If you
subscribe to both services you will have two entries on your credit card
statement, one for Qwikster and one for Netflix. The total will be the
same as your current charges. We will let you know in a few weeks when
the Qwikster.com website is up and ready.

For me the Netflix red envelope has always been a source of joy.
The new envelope is still that lovely red, but now it will have a
Qwikster logo. I know that logo will grow on me over time, but still,
it is hard. I imagine it will be similar for many of you.

I want to acknowledge and thank you for sticking with us, and to
apologize again to those members, both current and former, who felt we
    treated them thoughtlessly.

Both the Qwikster and Netflix teams will work hard to regain your
trust. We know it will not be overnight. Actions speak louder than
words. But words help people to understand actions.

    Respectfully yours,

-Reed Hastings, Co-Founder and CEO, Netflix

p.s. I have a slightly longer explanation along with a video posted on our blog, where you can also post comments.

  5. Hmm, I'm also curious about the Cat-5. I have about 500' of it sitting around. I have some 6e too, I think.

But going from 14 ga to, what 24 or 26 ga? I'm not sure about that... (maybe twisting the pairs into 2 groups of 4?)

I guess that wouldn't be bad - solder the ends.

  6. I'm not an audiophile and so my opinion comes from the trenches.

I bought a set of Heresy II's and a set of KLF-20's recently (now that I finally have discretionary money - wanted house\cars\ect all paid off before playtime) for two reasons:

    1) I really like the horns - plain and simple, tho I'm about 50, my ears apparently are still capable of hearing high frequencies. The klipsch separate out those high mids & highs and don't muddle them all up.

    2) Bang for the buck. Yeah, there's other speakers I'd like to have instead - but can be rather frugal and Klipsch are an excellent value for my needs.

Now, I find my self not getting bang for the buck in buying old Marantz equipment - this might be a poor decision on my part. Not sure yet.

  7. Well, I did snag a marantz 2230 cheap - but it needs some work, very dirty, buttons sticky, pots need cleaned. Probably some caps too.

In the meantime, I found a guy here in Iowa that bought some Marantz equip new in 1973. He's been the only owner and it appears it was well cared for. Tho clean, I suspect that these units are in need of a little TLC just due to age... I also didn't get them cheap, I did pay good money (tho way less than what's asked for on the page below).

Here's a link to another set of 3 (the exact same tuner, pre-amp & amp) that I just picked up this morning. So, these aren't mine but I'll post pics of mine when I get them inside (it's raining now).

  8. Hi guys (are there any women on this board at all???)...

I spend ALOT of time at work either driving or working alone on various pieces of equipment. For years, I've been listening to both music and talk radio (NPR). I have to admit, I'm digging the Google cloud and so have been listening to music more than in the past.

At any rate, I've bought quite a few earbud sets in the last few years. Bose, Sens, Sony, ect.

Now, since being on this Klipsch kick of mine, I've decided I need the S4A for my andriod phone.

Hopefully, I don't have the seal problem some of you are getting.

I will report back with my impressions, although if I were you, I wouldn't assign to much importance to my opinions. :)

  9. Hey guys, I'm also watching for a tube amp that I can play with (and "learn myself").

Looks like this unit from a church should have a separate tube amp.

    http://ames.craigslist.org/ele/2560816401.html

I know it's a longshot, but any ideas if this amp would be any good in a 2ch setup? Heck, it might not even be a 2ch amp, might be mono.

I *think* it's an item like this...

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Maas-Rowe-Carillon-Model-74-/170683605670?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27bd8922a6#ht_500wt_1413

EDIT: Well, looks like the best case scenario is that there is a tube amp, but it would geared for PA use.

  10. I need to read up on the best bang for the buck method of getting good a good source and signal to the amps. My terminology might be a bit off, but at this point I've just been using 320kbps mp3's on one system and regular CD's on another system.

I haven't seen a good summary of how to best rip from CD's or records to computer files. And I guess I need to learn about these higher quality CD's I've seen mentioned in other threads here. So, point me to some material on those CD's and do you need a better\different type of CD player then?

    Thanks in advance.

  11. I agree. Used to have a buddy in advertising. He freely admitted to taking psych classes to learn how to cause specific responses in consumers.

Here's the kicker... he said he often just resorted to lying. Often hard to check the facts and even harder to make people care he said.

EDIT: I don't know if you allow political comments here, but my buddy also frequently remarked on the excellent "fear" campaign that GWB used. Apparently, the fight or flight response is not something easily resisted but it is easily triggered and was used to great effect in the campaign.

EDIT02: apologize for hijacking thread. It's a habit and actually an art, tho under appreciated.

  12. Cool, thanks Mike. So I will be watching CL for vintage type equip for not much money (as I'm inherently cheap). I see there's a few on there now, but they aren't cheap at $185-300.
In fact, here's the links, don't these prices seem a little high? Maybe not, I'm still learning.

Ha, I just picked up cheap set of speakers (KLF Model 20) and a older, cheap amp (MCS 3225) so that I can practice rebuilding. I've already found caps bad in the speakers, so I've ordered replacements. Also started the process of cleaning\lubing the MCS unit, the POT's are all scratchy. I still need to read up on that procedure, I'm not clear on all the details (not sure if I can just clean or if I need to replace the rheostats).

  13. Hey guys,

I'm not really happy with the "fit" of the newly aquired KP-201's in the man cave, HT setup. Not that I'm super anal about apperance, but it is all dark, black, grey, blue shades down there and there isn't any wood. It's also a little cramped for the HII's.

So, I'm thinking of moving them upstairs to replace the large-ish KLF-20's in the 2Ch setup. But I'd want a different amp than the new Marantz I'm using to drive the 20's. [:-*]

Or, maybe I should ask this first. These 201's are 2003 models. Does the advice of running Heresy's with an older "smoother" SS for warmer sound still apply to these newer speakers?

Possibly, these speakers aren't enough like the H one's or the original H2's to benefit from the older amps. If these 201's would benefit from older amps, please point me towards a good model or even active auctions on ebay\CL.

And I don't know enough to even start discussing tube amps tho I should mention I did a couple of years in a community college in electronics and am currently a senior building automation tech, so I can understand just about anything you guys throw at me. [*]
