My cabinet doesn't have a lot of ventilation, Running the 809 as preamp keeps it cool without fan and the Carver runs cools even when driving the RF-7s above reference volume. Probably any good amp will sound good! BTW, the RF-7s were my first speaker upgrade since the 70's book self speakers I had. Wow! I bought the 809 for $426 from Amazon what a steal that has been.

I have Onkyo 809 and run old Carver TFM-35x with RF-7s -- took a bit to get the Audyssey right -- but it sounds awesome now. Amp is 250+ channel. I tried the onboard amps and they weren't nearly as good. Your biamp may be a good idea. I have Klipsch sub that I'm not all too happy about. I'm out of money for gear so I'm on 2.1 for awhile.

I replaced it with TFM-35x -- I wish I would have known that! I'm still using it with an Onkyo-809. I'm running 2.1 right now. RF-7's and SW=310

Mine melted down running it against too low impedance. And I do mean MELT.

I went through a lot of issues with my RF-7 and Onkyo Audyssey set up. Audyssey wants the crossover set to 80Hz to the sub. The Onkyo was resetting it to 40. So the Audyssey processing was thinking 80Hz and the receiver at 40Hz. It sounded awful. Resetting it manually to 80 fixed it.

I'm using a wireless setup for my SW-310. I had to change the subchannel my wireless router runs on since they are very close together. I also get interference from the microwave oven in the Kitchen which is next to Living room.

Amazon will ship you a new one right away. I thought mine was dead (not true!) and they had one on the way, which I had them recall. Maybe you can make deal on 818 with them.

I have old Carver TFM-35x on mine and it seems pretty quiet. I tried running the Onkyo 809 amps on them and they clipped, so I went back. Of course you might come over and hear something I'm not!

Is the hiss from the amp or the source. A lot of my classic rock CDs have tape hiss that you can hear at moderate to high volume

At least the MSRP was about the same.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions. Last night I found out the receiver was resetting the sub cut over to 40Hz after running the Audyssey. Also I set the Reference Level to 15db since my direc TV and Blu-Ray music is coming in at lower levels than a movie (Blu-Ray). Now it the dynamic equalization works at moderate volumes and I can get it pretty loud. I was listening to some rock at 0db and it was shaking the house.

Thanks that is next, I don't have that much done in the way of customization. Everyone acts like you just run Audyssey and your troubles are over, with this unit, not by a long shot. Chris over at Ask Audyssey has replied to some of my questions over there.

I will try this at 10 and 15db -- I haven't testing with B-ray movies ¦Reference Level Audyssey Dynamic EQ Reference Level Offset ??0dB: This should be used when listening to movies. ??5dB: Select this setting for content that has a very wide dynamic range, such as classical music. ??10dB: Select this setting for jazz or other music that has a wider dynamic range. This setting should also be selected for TV content as that is usually mixed at 10 dB below film reference. ??15dB: Select this setting for pop/rock music or other program material that is mixed at very high listening levels and has a compressed dynamic range. Movies are mixed in rooms calibrated for film reference. To achieve the same reference level in a home theater system each speaker level must be adjusted so that 30 dBFS band-limited (500 Hz to 2000 Hz) pink noise produces 75 dB sound pressure level at the listening position. A home theater system automatically calibrated by Audyssey MultEQ XT will play at reference level when the master volume control is set to the 0 dB position. At that level you can hear the mix as the mixers heard it. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is referenced to the standard film mix level. It makes adjustments to maintain the reference response and surround envelopment when the volume is turned down from 0 dB. However, film reference level is not always used in music or other nonfilm content. Thanks for the responses and the link. I'm just a bit baffled by why it sounds so bad, and a few minor tweaks by me make it sound better. Maybe it is just the 2.1 setup.

I thought that was the purpose of the Audyssey -- Just what does it do?

cdub5 -- nice avatar -- my father-in-law was Director of Player Personnel (Head of Scouting) for NY Giants from 1980-2002. He had a couple of rings too! I changed the settings you suggested to +6db will try it out for a day or two. I reran the Audyssey and it came out about the same. It seems sort of distant, like it is sending some of the sound to the non existent center/surrounds. Too tired to mess with it anymore tonight.

I'll check the pre out terminals again, you never know. But I've used the built in amp and the pre outs to the Carver and pretty much the same results.

Also does the Audyssey set equalization of the various Hz bands? Mine does nothing to those settings.

Sounds like mine is a dud. With speakers at +12 it starts to get pretty loud at 70 on the volume knob. But the RF-7's with the amp I have should make you deaf. I'm going to talk to Amazon and/or Onkyo about it.

I've run it with and without my Carver amp, not a lot of difference at moderate volume. Once you get it cranked you can tell the Onkyo was clipping a bit. What I meant earlier is that if you run the Audssey you can turn it all the way up and you don't get anywhere near "loud". I'll work on it again soon.

At the -10db setting you could turn it up to 100 (way more than 11 I suppose) and it wasn't loud. Oddly, at higher db settings the sound is better. Originally I was about to box it up and send it back. It sounded awful. I'm not sure that the pre amp outputs are putting out enough. My old preamp turned up to about 1/4 to 1/3 would run you out of the house. For stereo CDs it does not sound as good as my Carver CT-6. I haven't had much time to mess with it last couple of days, more later.

It only asks for center, left seat, right seat.

I've done that, it is the same as the Quick start single position in terms of the settings it is using. It sets the two fronts and the sub to around -10 db. Those are all the speakers I have. I'm guessing that the auto set up only works if you have center and surrounds. Well it runs through the set up, but I don't think it knows what to do with a 2.1 set up. I started by changing to 0db and just kept moving it up a 2db at a time.
