  1. That Pioneer Elite amp is very good and should drive your speaker to insane levels.  What would an amp bring to the fire?  The Corwalls are a bit over 100 db sensitivity.  Using 100 db sensitivity, mean 1 watt at 1m you get 100 dbs. To make it sound twice as loud, you need 10x the power or 10 watts to get to 110db.  Wow, that loud with just 10 watts.

Most of our listening is in the 1 watt region with Heritage speakers and that is why so many of us use tube amps to power their speakers.  I have used a power amps with multiple Pioneer Elite avr's and can't say the amp added anything other than I liked doing it.  I have also use tube amps with the Elite avr's and enjoy them over SS amps if you are looking for a slightly different sound. Don't get hung up on amp watts, speaker sensitivity is a key factor in deciding your power needs.

  2. The benefit of letting the subs do the work is for bass management.  I had RF 7's and set the XO at 80 Hz.  A subwoofer is constructed to have less distortion than a woofer.  A higher XO can help with dynamics and midrange clarity.  Using the lowest XO may make people feel good about their tower speakers but, that is not the point.  If you can't tame the boominess, additional PEQ may be needed.
