Hi folks,
It looks like I may be picking up a free set of LaScala cabinets... A local establishment just wants them out, so I'm going to do what I can to get them.
I really dont have the funds for a rebuild, but I'm hoping I can do it over time... and this is too good a deal to pass up..
My question is this - I have found most of the parts for the rebuild - but I'm having trouble finding the Midrange horn assembly. I know I will need the K55 driver - but the only horn assemblies I see are from Heresey speakers... are they the same? Or is there an aftermarket horn that will work?
Keep in mind I'm going cheap on these...
-
I decided to pass - Not enough room to have another large set of mains in my den... I thought I could squeeze them in, but I'll hold off..
I spoke to Josh a couple of times - and they are in his basement not hooked up - so if you decide to check them out you may need to take a small amp and wires.
-
Just got off the phone - I'm heading out to take a look at 8pm...
-
I'm on this one.. About 45 minutes from me... and those would make a great "b" set of fronts... Left a message, hopefully still available!

Hi folks,
Heres the story - I'm the Media Ministries coordinator at Church. As such, I have to deal with all out AV and related items.
So - We have - up in our attic, a few horn related goodies that I need to sell to raise cash for the department. We need new Mics and I'm hoping to fund the purchase with these items.
Bottom line is - I dont know what they are worth, prices are all over the map on ebay. Frankly - I just want a fair price... and we can call it a donation if you'd like. Let your conscious be your guide.
I'm happy to show them to whoever is interested - just get with me for a time. Bring some strong friends for the Sentry's - 'cause no way can I move them!!
First up - an Altec Lansing 1803b horn. Its been up there for years and years. I think it was used in our old building back prior to 1980 or so. Looks to be in very good shape with only minor marks and no rust I can see.

So - Love my new baby's... and I'm already thinking about what I can do to help them out if need be.
So - are there recommendations to recap them? Or do most folks just leave them alone?
If you have recapped them, was there a noticeable improvement?
Thanks in advance - and yes, I know I just got them... I'm a tinkerer!! I cant help myself!

Hey David - I didn't realize you were a member here!
I just picked these up last night and they are AWESOME! David is a super guy to deal with and I felt bad taking his babies from the nest... but rest assured - they are in a good home!

BTW, I hope that isn't the permanent place for them. Looks a wee bit cramped in there!
Its a bit cluttered at the moment , but yes they will live there...
Like I said - now you know why I had to get rid of my LaScalas! They barely fit on each side...
-
Ohhh yes.... I am reporting back...
I fell in love - I knew I shouldnt have gone!
These are now in my den, tuned (Audessey in my Marantz 5006).. Sweet...
My buddy went with me - and he has the RF63 fronts and matching center and surrounds... he said he actually likes these a bit better.. He said these rears are very sweet and better broken in than his... I think hes frustrated a little bit..

I know.... I know.... but for budget reasons, and the size of my room (tiny!) I'm pretty limited.
I have a meet for tonight to hear the RF3 setup... I'll report back!
Thanks for the help...

If any Klipsch speakers sound forgiving and in your face its due to upstream components/bad recordings/room issues/etc.
Sorry - Poor Choice of words...
I'm not up on my Klipsch audiophile terminology...
That being said - Any issues with the RF3 to be aware of? What would be the primary difference between them and the Icon?
From what I have read - I gather that the RF3 will be brighter and have more full bass sound. What about speed and accuracy? I previously owned a set of La-Scala's, and miss that accuracy and speed...
-
Thanks for the info!
When you say that the RF3 and RF62 are in another league - how so?
From what I have read, the RF3's are more unforgiving and in your face, typical of the famed Klipsch sound.. But I would have to think they are also more poerful due to the larger drivers.
I'm honestly having a hard time keeping my eyes off the RF3's...
Any ideas what the differences were between the RF3 and the RF3-II? Not sure, but I believe these are first gen.

I have been looking at a new HT setup for my small den system. I am primarily looking for accuracy for music, but want good 5.1 performance..
I currently have a meet set to pick up a set of ICON KF26's and a KC25 center this Sunday. Price is $500.
Form what I gather reading here and elsewhere - the ICON KF's are a bit smoother in the midrange and not quite as forward as is typical for Klipsch, which is why I had been leaning toward them.
I have about an $850 budget.
This would also allow me to pick up an RW-12d sub.
Now for the DIlemma:
Crutchfield is blowing out the RF52 II's in Cherry for $275 per side and the RC-42 for about the same - total of $750..
There is Also a couple of other HT setups on CL locally with:
RF3's, RC3, RS3 for $900
RF-62's, RC52 - $750
So - lots of options...
What would you do with an $850 budget?
I'm still leaning toward the Icon's as they are only 1 year old and in perfect shape.
-
I will be picking up a used set of KF26's and a KC25 in the next couple of days and I have about $300 to spend on a sub. What would you recommend?
Room is a smaller den that I have set up as a personal listening area with 5.1. Listening area is approx 100-120 sq ft.
Any used bargains I should be looking for? I got a great deal on the mains... about half price and only a year old.

I've been lovin on my 'scalas for the last month, and what do I find at goodwill today??
Pristine set of KG4's for $40!
I now have them set up in the front room and they sound sweet!!!
Pics to follow later this evening...

I had planned to just run an amp to each input... but more research on active crossovers has me thinking that the balance between drivers would not be correct...
-
O.k... Heres my attempt at figuring it out based on the AA schematic - can someone let me know if this is correct? I attached a .pdf of the modified schematic...
-
Yes I searched, and yes I understand passive v.s active...
So, please refrain from berating me because passive bi-amping has little value .... please read on for my reasons...
I'm going to try the small Class T amp route for my system, at least for a little while to evaluate it. As such, and since the amps are so cheap and small, I picked up two and plan to use them in a bi-amped configuration.
These are 20W Lepai amps. I plan to bridge the input and then run the tweeter and squawker on one channel and the woofer on the other... simply because of available power. I'm hoping to better balance out the power useage by going the passive bi-amp route... from my research, these amps are best when run under 3-4watts...
So, can someone with more Electronics knowledge than me show me exactly where I need to tap into the crossover to isolate the woofer yet still maintain the crossover point for it? I have heard of people running the woofer at full range, but that it will muddy the sound output... so I want to still utilize the passive crossover for this reason.
Had anyone got a setup like this that they can snap me a photo of?
Thanks!!!

Just to put another nail in the MA6100 coffin...
I also had the volume pot balance issue, but after much research and discussion with a local dealer / tech, found that its actually a system wide grounding issue. The older integrated mac's used small blade and socket connectors on most of the wiring, and these are problematic after 40 years.... I went through and tried to solder many of them (the previous owner had some quite a few as well), but there was still enough ground bleed to cause the balance bias issue... I did replace the volume pot (for $100!!!) but that had no effect... In the end I sold the unit for less than half what I purchased it for..
Definitely avoid the 6100 unless you can extensively test it and know the issue has already been addressed.
All that being said - when I did use the unit, it was very nice sounding.... but maddening becuase I had to adjust the balance every time I touched the volume...

Thanks guys!
I plan to keep them stock for a bit - and I am loving them!
One thing I noticed - they definitely show much more detail than I'm used to... I'm hearing things I never noticed before. On John WIlliams "The Seville Concert" - I kept hearing this shuffling noise I couldn't place... then I realized - it was his sleeve brushing the body of the guitar as he played... amazing!
They also reveal ALL the issues with lower quality recordings... Some of my albums sound dead, while others are just so alive.. Dave Brubeck - Time Out is an absolute joy to listen to, its like sitting in the recording studio back in '59 while they recorded!!
As a side note, I just heard about Class T amps - and am planning on picking up a couple of Lepai Tripath amps and trying out bi-amping the La Scala's...
-
Ok, thanks.. I assumed Velcro, but wanted to check...
-
I want to add grilles and need to see how they attach and what the back side of the grille panel looks like. I've recovered speaker cabinets in the past so this should be easy and a definite improvement in appearance to my chipped up from panels..

Speakerfritz:
Interesting - I really wish I would have dual majored in EE.... While I can read a mean schematic, I couldn't tell you whats actually happening to the signal.
I assume, from the notes on the "improved" schematic - that its a better impedance match since its forcing the squawker to the same impedance..
Also interesting is the addition and modification of the inductors as my understanding of them is that they are used in timing the signal... so I assume its to time the various components to create the proper alignment of each wavefront. Feel free to educate me if I'm wrong... I'm definitely no expert..
So, what is improved in each circuit, and why?
I found your threads on the battery biased circuit... very interesting... so basically, you apply an initial charge to the caps, forcing them to be in a charged state as they would be after a period of time, causing more predictable and stable performance... You've definitely piqued my interest! I like the fact that Klipsch crossover networks are nice self contained units, so I could build several and swap them in and out to compare.

I saw the Crites site, and the alkeng site as well... but as you can imagine - info overload!!!
But seriously, sweet score! La Scalas are the only heritage I have never owned =====================Contact Bob Ctires (do a search) He'll send you all the caps.
Have you looked at this, =================

Midrange horns for La-Scalas
in Technical/Restorations
Posted
Thanks guys!
This will be a project over a number of weeks / months as I'm very limited on budget...
I dont want to buy completed 'Scalas as that would be no fun!
I'm thinking about doing the bass extension modification... Probably will use Crites Woofers... Possibly Crites CT125 tweeters as well, depending on how funding goes..
If I manage to get these cleaned up and looking / sounding good - they could possibly replace my RF3-II's as my fronts... the RF3's would go to fund the build.
Not really sure how this is all going to pan out at the moment - the cabinets literally just fell in my lap. Planning to pick them up Sunday.
As to crossovers - I'll likely build a set of Type A's to start with..
I think if I come up with around $4-$500 I can get this show started...
