  1. Yeah I did. I even swapped the cables too just in case. The tweeter was not working. I guess just sitting there without use for that long a period just caused them to deteriorate. Now you have me thinking. If he would do that. At that price could I sand the top and repaint it since it is actual wood?
  2. Lucky you. I went to go demo them today and it's a no. Cosmetically they were fine. A few scratches but nothing too bad. The owner hadn't used them in over two years because his amp broke. I brought an old amp I had and tested them out. On one of the speakers the tweeter didn't work and on the other one it was cutting in and out. Really depressed about it. I don't think I want to get into repairing them and all. He says he bought them in 2006, so they weren't too old.
  3. Good to hear they are retaining their value Thaddeus. I've already done what Fish said. I will be getting them for $500 unless there is something wrong with them. It sounds like everyone who gets them is really happy with them. Hopefully there is nothing wrong with them tomorrow.
  4. Thanks for the input guys. Really appreciate it. Bumping it up to see if I get a few more opinions. I am just O.C.D. like that. Gonna go see them and demo them tomorrow. I've been so busy I haven't been able to. I hope nothing is wrong with them since they've had them listed for two weeks now. I shouldn't be too concerned that they are at least 7 years old, since they were last made in 2006?
  5. If you had the option which route would you go with? From my searches here it looks like the RF-5 is a better speaker. If not please correct me. The RF5's are on sale from a guy who is moving and needs to unload them. He's asking $600, but I will try and see if I can get it a little lower. They don't seem to be a great deal at that price from what I can see here. He is local, so I will demo them and there's not shipping. He has another center that isn't the RC-7, so I would have to find one if I do go that route. I know that the RC-7 is the matching center for the RF-5's. Thanks for the help.
  6. Anywhere in particular that you are looking Scrappy? Sounds like you've found some good deals. I keep looking in my local Craigslist. Six hundred did seem a little high to me. Seems as if those that sold on here sold for less than that. Somewhere around 5 or just above. The guy doesn't seem to want to come down from that so he'll have to keep sitting on them. I won't come up that high. He can test the market and get back to me later if he still has them. Thanks for your help.
  7. They are local Blake. It's a 30 minute drive.
  8. Hello all. I was trying to do a little research but can't find anything recent. I am looking at a pair of rf-82's for sale. As per the buyer they are 3 years old which is right around the time they were discontinued. He's currently asking $600. I think it might be a little too high I am not sure and just above my price range. I cant find any recent sales in here (or maybe I am just too dumb with the search feature). All I find is threads with sales from 3 years back. Any help from the forum is greatly appreciated as to what market value is for the speakers right now. I'll have him send pics. He says there's a tiny nick on it when they were moved but that's it and has offered to send pics, but I don't want to waste my time if he's asking too much and won't budge. Thanks.
  9. Wondering how many people here have purchased from Craigslist from someone out of town. I came across a pair of speakers but they are about 4 hours a away. I haven't made him an offer but at his asking price driving my gas guzzler to get them and then the tolls won't save me all that much. Of course if he does than it may be worth it, especially if I don't drive. I am concerned about buying them without driving up to demo them. I am wondering about experiences others have had here and what if any recourses are available if things go sour.
  10. I am in the middle of upgrading my whole system. I decided that I am going to buy the wife this camera she has really been wanting. She love photography. We have a very hard room so she will take pictures that I can use as treatments for the room.
  11. How I envy you right now Troy. I am in a similar position. I have had Quintets for almost 10 years and I am planning to upgrade to the reference line. I would have upgraded years ago but I am in real estate and I don't have to explain how that has gone. I am looking at the same speaker set you are getting. I picked up the receiver the other day (Pioneer Elite VSX53) because of the huge discount. I am looking at picking up the towers and center in the next few weeks. Hopefully I can pick up all 3 and not just the towers. I have to crunch a few numbers first. After so many years of waiting it's finally going to happen.
  12. Thanks for the responses guys. Eaux I use my system mostly for movies but I do like to put on some music and the wife likes music too while she cleans. I've seen some open box stuff around from distributors and the pricing is not too bad. So I can call any distributor and speak to a salesman for a better price? Most authorized distributors are selling them at MSRP. Anyone, or any one of the sellers that you recommend talking to, or just call them all and see who can give me the best deal?
  13. Hello fellow forum members. I am sure this question has been answered but I am having trouble finding it. I have the opportunity to get some rf-82 at a fair discount. A friend of mine is moving so he needs to unload them. I was considering getting rf-82ii because I am upgrading from the Quintets after almost 10 years and moving into a much larger place. Now my question is, is there a difference between the two in audio? Cosmetics doesn't matter to me. Is the newer one better than the old? I don't have the luxary of listening to them side by side. I know this can be somewhat subjective but I am curious what others that have done it have to say. Thanks.
  14. Color is a matter of taste. I remember building a house years ago for a woman, she wanted the house yellow and the stucco bands (I live in Miami where everything is concrete and block) orange. The house looked like a pumpkin. I thought it was hideous but she was paying for it. The best advice is to figure out what else you want to put in there. IS it just a theater room? Are you putting a bar, kitchen, gaming area? What color do you like for cabinets if you have a bar and have you decided on furniture. Make it so it all matches. Think about the finished product because now you can choose colors, or the add ons. Once it's painted it will effect your choice for any of the stuff I listed above.
  15. If I add the surrounds, with the rf82's do I have to go with the rs62's or can I go a little smaller and do rs52's? I don't think I can keep my old Quintets are rears with the rf82s and c62
  16. Swap, quick question. Since you have such a large room, are you having an issue with bassiness from the center? My current set up does. Can't seem to get rid of it. Will the RC52 or 62 sound much better or do you have some kind of treatments, or setups for that? Thanks.
  17. So after some research and suggestions, I will not be upgrading to the Synergy but rather the Reference line. I will be demoing them within the next few days because I haven't heard them in a while. I have heard them before but the money situation wasn't right back then. Wellthe room they will be in is a rather large living room. 19x23 with 20' high ceilings to be exact. Now my questions is which ones would be best for such a large room. I think the 42s might be too small. Will the 52s or 62 do or will I have to step up all the way to the 82s? Thanks.
  18. Thanks. I'll check it out. My problem is that down here in South Florida I can't seem to find anyone with a showroom to demo the References. Most are custom installers that come out to your house and just set them up. I want to hear them first and make a determination of which one to go with first.
  19. Hello all. Long time lurker, first time poster. A little background. For several years I have had the quintets. I was in a small place so they were great. Well I jumped the gun a few years back and purchased the C-2 expecting to purchase the F2 towers within a few months when I moved. Financial hard times hit and that was out of the question. Things have finally gotten back on track and I am in a bigger place. I am looking to get towers but the F2 is no longer being made. Now it's the F20 which I can't find locally in Miami. I can only find the F10(will not work in my house, I have a 19'x23' living room with 20' high ceilings) and F30 at HHGregg. I want to demo the F20 to make sure the F30 isn't over kill. I worry that it may overpower my C2 or may not match timbre wise. I also see Best Buy has the KF26 and KF 28. They seem to be the F20 and F30 respectively, but I am not sure. I've read that they are but I want confirmation. If so I will demo them. My main concern is that all 3 fronts have the same timbre. Is it possible or will I need to get a new center? Please help. Thank you.
