  1. Lol, maybe that's the shredded paper that Fizik got... I don't think I'd be too interested in buying some dudes old playboy with "minor edge wear".
  2. I rough cut the baffle veneer with a pair of scissors before applying it to the baffle. Once adhered I used a router, but I bet you could trim it by hand.
  3. I'm looking forward to seeing this build come together. I think that's a great looking driver...reminds me of the driver that Rythmic uses in their 15" subs, but with an even stronger motor.
  4. I've seen lots of pics of subs done like you suggest and they look ok. Just google diy veneered subwoofer for examples. I'm a complete noob at both diy and veneering. It seems imposing at first, but it's really not very difficult once you get started. I didn't own the router or bits I needed when I started this project, but I figure they'll get used again in the future so I made the investment. Now I need to build the second subwoofer just to get my average build cost down.
  5. Diysoundgroup puts a roundover on their subwoofer baffles which makes them difficult to veneer. I really only needed the router to create a new baffle so I'd have square edges to veneer. I also used it to trim the veneer edges but you really don't need a router for that; scrappydue said he used a razor for trimming.
  6. If nothing else, it gave me an excuse to buy this gigantic router bit...
  7. Looks like the makings of a pretty bad a$$ sub!
  8. Really just two factors: The CDT-5650s tweeter is titanium which i believe would more closely match the timber of your existing speakers. The CDT-5800s, which also have titanium tweeters, would seem overkill compared to your existing speakers.
  9. You could even add on these $150 RB-25s for rear surrounds to complete a 7.1 system! http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ele/5758011354.html
  10. Or RF-82IIs for $550 from the same guy in Raleigh...http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ele/5712063199.html
  11. RF-62II for $350 in Raleigh...http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ele/5712105919.html
  12. The Lord of the Rings was produced before Atmos was available. The screen shot shows DTS-HD which is how i would expect it to be encoded. It looks like your PS3 is doing the decoding and sending the signal to your receiver as PCM.
  13. Since you're planning to upgrade your mains at some point, i would recommend purchasing the center speaker that matches your future mains. I've read that the Reference Premier line as a somewhat different timber than the older reference speakers so i dont know if the RP 440c would perfectly blend with your RB-35s, but if you're eventually going buy the matching Reference Premier tower than it would only be temporary. If you're willing to scour the used market then i'd keep my eyes open for a RC-62 which would match your 35s. I dont think you'd be very happy with the R-12SW...it would be the weak link in your setup. I'd recommend trying to stretch the budget to get a sub that you'd be happy with for the long run. The R-115SW can be found for 1/2 price if you call Acoustic Sound Design. If you're only looking at new speakers, then i think the new Reference Premier towers would suit you well. You have a pretty big room so i wouldn't be worried about going too big with the speakers. As others noted, it's pretty easy to find the older Reference II line of speakers for sale on the used market at good prices. My advice would be to take your time researching the best speakers for your room and searching out the best prices. It'll be cheaper to buy what you want the first time than it is to replace gear that you had to settle for...I know this from experience. It's taken me about four years to put my system together. My order of acquisition was to first buy the towers, then a sub, then the center, and then my surrounds. I found my rear RS-35s on craigslist one day for only $50 and they work perfectly.
  14. I'll just add that if I were in your shoes, my path to 5.1 would be: Buy a center channel speaker. Buy a subwoofer. Upgrade your mains and move your 35s to surround duty. Kind regards, Fuzzy
  15. I'd suggest waiting to see how they perform in the new setting before spending money on new mains. I've compared my RB-81iis against my RF-7iis and they're more closely matched than you'd expect (at normal volumes...). You'll have plenty of other things to spend your money on if this is your first home.
  16. Can you post a picture of the response curve from your modeling?
  17. I'm not sure i understand this completely. Do you mean that i should cut out a circle from a scrap piece of MDF and attach it to the box with glue as a template? Why would it need to be smaller than the existing cutout?
  18. No, you're thinking depth as in the depth of the recess which is 1/2". The 7/8" dimension is the relative difference between the woofer cutout and the outer diameter of the woofer.
  19. I think I could use the original baffle as a template if i trim off the bottom part of the original driver recess...then i could clamp the template to the box and use a top bearing flush trim bit to create the recess.
  20. Anyone know where to buy a rabbeting bit that will cut to 7/8"?
  21. Well I've gotten the baffle veneered, but I've discovered that my rabbeting bit isn't large enough to cut the driver recess. I need a rabbeting bit that can cut to 7/8" depth.
  22. Are you watching from a BlueRay player? You may need to change the players output to bitstream.
  23. What sub are you using? I'd recommend setting your speakers to "small".
