  1. You'll find a lot of Denon fans here, but I, for one, went with the Integra 8.2. It is THX-Select, does 7.1, has PLII and dts neo, has a kick-a$$ remote, and IMO doesn't sound to bright. I'm moving this summer and am looking into putting speakers in a couple extra rooms, that the 8.2 will handle nicely w/ the ABUS. This is just MHO. I listened to the 3802 and it sounded great, but to me, the Integra felt better. ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround KV-1 rear-center M&K V-1250 sub Integra 8.2 receiver Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player
  2. Racer Roy, I have Reference 3's w/ an Integra(Onkyo) and IMO, they are not bright. I have noticed, in real un-scientific testing, that if I use THX mode and enable the re-eq, it sounds a little warmer than w/ out. But that may or maynot be valid. In short, I wouldn't rule out an Onkyo without listening. ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround KV-1 rear-center M&K V-1250 sub Integra 8.2 receiver Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player
  3. Goon, That's about how long I've had mine. I'm a Software Engineer, so the CHAD was a major plus. I don't think I'll ever reach CHAD nirvana, but I enjoy trying. IMO, the CHAD the scrolling on the chad is a little slow, and can get annoying. For me, I logically organized all the "every-day" access buttons onto the first screen for each device, and use the hardware buttons whenever possible (the SAT device was the most difficult). I also setup macros to handle switching of components. Another hint is to move frequently used devices/macros to the top of their respective lists. A friend and I got a packaged deal on 2 8.2's. He is building a home, so he hasn't set his up. When asked how I like mine, the response was: Setting it up, out of the box is a chore (or 1/2 the fun if your me), but once it's setup, it really is nice. If you haven't already been there, check out www.remotecentral.com, lots of cool stuff/ideas for the CHAD. Have fun w/ it. If you encounter any problems, or discover really cool feature, please pass it on. ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround KV-1 rear-center M&K V-1250 sub Integra 8.2 receiver Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player
  4. I got click happy and forgot to address mounting. You mentioned you'd have to wall mount. I have a very deep room and had to ceiling mount. In short, I built a box (24x12x12 inches) that I bolted to the ceilng, and was open towards the TV. I then tilted the speaker down. The RC-3 has a spike for doing just that. I painted it to match, it cost < $50.00, and (most importantly) passed the wife inspection. If you have to wall it, perhaps a decorative shelf? If you would like to see a picture(s), I can post or private email. ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround KV-1 rear-center M&K V-1250 sub Integra 8.2 receiver Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player
  5. I would strongly recommend doign a "try before you buy" if you go the RS-3 for the rear-center. I have RF-3's (front), RC-3 (front-center), RS-3 (surround). When I added the rear-center, I added a borrowed KV-1 (granted, not a RC-3), I'm planning on upgrading to a RC-3 ASAP. I played around with an RS-3 (granted I was then running 1 surround), and wasn't happy at all. Of coure, your ears could prove mine wrong. Anyway you go, you will LOVE the 6.1. It took me about a week of tweeking to get it "right" ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround KV-1 rear-center M&K V-1250 sub Integra 8.2 receiver Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player
  6. I too have an Integra 8.2 w/ Reference 3's (almost) all the way around for a 6.1 config, and I love it. I use PL-II movie setting as the default for TV (DirecTV w/ optical audio hookup for the occational 5.1 broadcasts). It really does some cool things with a stereo source. Even Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI on VHS sound good! I'm not sure if I like PL-II for music, but I attribute that to the RS-3's in a fairly deep room defusing to much sound. I could be wrong. Goon, how do you like the 8.2? I don't know of too many people that have them. Most of the reviews I've seen cover the 7.2 or 9.1. I was looking at the 7.2 w/ the CHAD upgrade and was able to get the 8.2 for $150 more than that combo, so decided, what the heck... Have you tried hooking up the ABUS? I'm looking for any "war stories" on this before I try. ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround KV-1 rear-center M&K V-1250 sub Integra 8.2 receiver Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player
  7. I have an M&K sub and a pair of RF-3's on the floor. My boys never bothered with the port's on the back, but when they were roughly a year old, they enjoyed pulling the grills off the sub (it has a grill much like the RF-3) and the RF-3's. I bought some heavy black yarn, and tied it around the bottom, snug enough to not allow them to be pulled off, but not tight enought to damage the grill. It held up rather well. BTW, kids can be trained, my boys are now 3 and tell everyone 'don't hurt daddy's speakers'... ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround M&K V-1250 sub Integra 8.2 receiver Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player
  8. Congrats on the family "upgrade"!!! I second the notion of "sleeping on the day job". I have twin sons (just turned 3). They appreciate the Reference 3's we have. "Turn it up, dad!" is heard frequently at our house! hope all is well with mom and baby. ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround M&K V-1250 sub Integra 8.2 receiver Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player
  9. In short, I'm trying to hook up a 6.1 configuration, but i'm not sure what/how/if possible to hook this up. wire the rear-surround to the left or right? what settings on the receiver? any help from those who have traveled this path would be helpful. due to spousal constraints, there will be only one rear center. (you all know what this is like!) TIA... ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround M&K V-1250 sub Integra 8.2 receiver Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player
  10. I recently did this, except I went to 6.1. I to have the reference series. My guess is you could double this solutions. I choose a RC-3II for the rear center. I built a box that has an internal space of 12x12x24" to hold the speaker and allow for tilting. Remember, the RC-3 has the rear-prop-screw-spike-thingy (yes, a technical term ) I have recessed lighting, so wiring was hidden in the ceiling. I painted the entire box to match the ceiling (soft white). I used two 2 1/2" lag bolts to screw it into a ceiling stud. I have a 8' ceiling and not to many 7'+ friends, so it was plenty high. The best part is/was: spouse friendly. I had a few limitations to placement, but it is essential dead center with the front center, about 4-6 feet behind the main listening position. I moved my surrounds to the ceiling height to the exact sides of the main position as well. I used smooth pine for the wood, pre-drilled all the finishing nail holes, and placed nails every 6" or so. I didn't want vibration distort. I'm not saying this is the best solution, but I posed a similar one a few months ago, and this worked best for me. The material cost around $25.00 and labor took about 3 hours with help (my 3 yr old twin sons) so maybe solo, you're looking at 2 hours. hope this helps ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround M&K V-1250 sub Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player Sony DB STR-935 receiver
  11. I'm getting ready to buy an Integra 7.2. I looked at the Denon 3802 myself, but decided on the Integra. Nothing stood out, but (in my humble opinion) the Integra is slightly better quality. Just my $0.02... Have fun looking ------------------ Current HT Setup: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround M&K V-1250 sub Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player Sony DB STR-935 receiver
  12. I'm planning on adding a rear-center surround (6.1) And I'm not sure on which to use. RC-3 or RS-3. I was planning on RC-3, but is a dipolar the better choice? I've been reading these boards for a couple months, and seen both opinions. Does anyone have some "hands-on" with either? My room dimensions are 14 x 40, with the HT in half. The rear-center will be placed approx. half way back from the ceiling. Thanks in advance for your comments/suggestions. Current Setup is: RF-3's front RC-3 center RS-3's surround M&K V-1250 sub Mitsubishi 50" Pioneer C-503 dvd-player Sony DB STR-935 receiver (going to replace with an Integra 7.2 or 8.2)
  13. Man, no matter we think or how much $ we make, the solution must always pass by Darth Ma (the wife). I use a real high tech solution, very expensive. I cover the normal "nice, white, see-through" drapes with a "nice, heavy, dark" blanket. easy up/easy down. just my $.02
  14. Don't forget the recent offering of the second Holy Trilogy (Star Wars Episode I). This is THE reason I'm currently evaluating a new reciever (front runner was Denon 3802, now looking at an Integra dtr-7.2). Terminator 2 is dts-es. I have Chicken Run (for the kids, honest ) and it is dts-es, but dolby 5.1. if you haven't seen any of these, i would recommend them all.
  15. I was planning exactly that if I can't find an alternative. If I go that route, I'll post my results. The major decision is whether to fix the angle, or build design it to be adjustable...
