  1. It might be good to write a letter to the Texas Secretary of State explaining the situation. I did something like that (a long time ago) in Arizona, and was pleasantly surprised by how many options there really were. I would be surprised if the student would lose residency particularly if his absence was for "educational" reasons, and there may be others.

  2. A friend of mine who is a CPA along with her husband had their daughter established residency by purchasing a cheap undeveloped residential lot in Austin or thereabouts.  Daughter was eligible for in-state tuition, graduated and sold the lot.  Some variation of that might work for you. She lived in another state prior to arriving in Austin for college.

A B2 flew over this year's race also. It's so big, it looks like a city flying over!

Saw one at an Offutt Air Base show a few years ago.  Amazing piece of technology.  Still nothing is as thunderous as a dozen or so B-52's heading your way.  The ground feels like an earthquake (or maybe Jubes).

But I still... "And I dreamed I saw the bombers
    Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
    Above our nation"

Mine are exactly 10 feet apart and 18 inches from rear wall.  my listening position is 15 feet from speakers.  NO TOE IN.  I agree  with you wholeheartedly on no toe in.  Yet everything in this game is subjective.  Perhaps speakers without a tractrix  mid.  When toed in any position that "horn honk"  always seems to be just around the corner, or ever so slightly present.

    Regards,

    John

Mine are very close to the distances you mention (within inches).  I do have mine 8" inches from the wall after much experimentation. As you say it's all subjective.  Good luck.

You may want to consider what I just purchased for $250 with a built in SS pre, Fluance rt81. Then you may be thinking on going up the ladder to something more pricey. The Fluance has a lot to offer for what it cost. A decent tube phono pre gets pricey as you may already know. It is not an easy task to make and sell a nice quiet phono preamplifier using tubes.

Thanks.  I'll look into that, I have run into the name recently amid my searches.  Price is definitely right.

So you don't need mega power and the Forte's have good bottom end. Your phono stage will be noticed in the mids and highs. A tube pre will take the edge off your highs just a bit. So if you find your treble a bit too much, that may be a good thing. If you yearn for ultra high sizzle, a solid state phono pre lends itself to more, to the point of shrill. All this depending on your source vinyl and how it was mastered, but generally speaking tubes give you warm without being dull and solid state can get edgy on horns. I like high end sizzle and my tube phono pre with large horns sounds wonderful. Either way, you really can't go wrong. It's more a personal taste kind of thing.

Thanks for the info. I'm leaning toward the tube pre.  Do you have some suggestions?

Let me ask you this: what turntable/cartridge and speakers are you using?

At the moment I'm using a vintage '77 Pioneer PL570 with a new Grado cart (can't remember at the moment if its Blue or the next level up-which I believe it is.  While it sounds great to me, as I'm in the process of moving up to a more modern TT sometime in the not to distant future.  I have new Forte III's I'm currently listening to.

I love this line from OTR!  Thanks for reminding me.

I believe paper has its own flavor for sure.  Though I'm reporting on my experience with soft drinks. I'll never forget the day that the burger joint I used to hang out in switched from white paper cones in aluminum holders with paper straws to waxed cups and plastic straws.  All the difference in the world, and not for the better.  I'm certain this would also effect coffee as well.

That issue is why I canx Tidal. I have 600 meg down internet and no matter what device I tried I could never get thru one song. I can stream HD movies to 4 devices simultaneously but not a song to one device.

That is becoming my experience also. It seems like the longer a song the worse the problem. Nothing ruins music like this.  Thanks for sharing your experience.

  11. Getting ready to pull the trigger on an Integrated Tube Amplifier.  One that does not have a phono stage. As a tube newbie I have much to learn and apparently to stew over.  I had been considering the McIntosh MA252, but someone here or elsewhere commented that the built in  the Phono Stage the tubes are bypassed when listening through said phono stage.  This was just confirmed by a McIntosh rep who was asked by the dealer.  I'm not even sure what that means given that I've listened twice to the MA252 with Vinyl and was impressed-but I'm anxious to know more.

However I'm likely to buy something for about the same price without the built-in phono stage.  So my question remains.  Is the extra cost of a tube based phono stage going to add even more to the experience?  I suspect this like so much else is subjective, but I'm anxious to hear from the learned, knowledgeable, guessers and mystics.

    Thanks in advance.

  12. Just been trying Tidal and am very impressed with it-for the most part. The last couple of days however it will stop in the middle of playing a song on my home system.  No issues the first week or so. Also doing a trial with Apple Music, with which I've had no issues.  Any suggestions as to where the weak link might be?  Cox the cable carrier, my router, Apple TV or could it be an issue on Tidal's end.  Any and all thoughts welcomed.  Strangely my Vinyl doesn't have these issues.😎

  13. Two weeks ago, I had the chance to buy the amp from a Leslie 101. Had the wife with me though and it was butt-ugly and I had to consider some way to make it less so.  In the meantime it was sold.  I will say it sounded great in Stereo.  You can actually use four speakers.  The seller had modified it with a volume control and didn't even need a preamp.  Pretty amazing.  The next night I was at a Jerry Garcia Birthday party and the cover band had the Leslie Speaker and the Hammond B-3 which were clearly a match made in heaven-from my perspective.

  14. Just a couple of observations.  I've never been a Beatles fan, but am a fan of both John Lennon and George Harrison (just found a great Concert for Bangladesh box of Vinyl).  I have Forte III's now, but a friend has original Forte I's with new caps and the titanium tweet.  He uninstalled the Titanium because he didn't like the sound.  Those Forte's sound just amazing to me though.  I have also within the last week listening to some Bealtles on Tidal HiFi that had some tracks I really enjoyed.  I would also try them not toed in.  Mine sound best that way. Good luck.

  15. Remind her "bigger is better" in audio as well-though my wife finally won the argument and I sold the Cornwalls for the Forte III's which seem to satisfy her.  Steve Guttenberg (the Audiophlliac on Youtube) has an interesting video i just watched today explaining the inexplainable thought that "most people hate speakers".  Never even occurred to me that it might be the case, but as I consider reactions to some of those I bring my system to, it does make sense.

No experience with their subs, but their amps I have used in the past with great value to performance ratios.   They have my respect for solid value.  I thought about trying their RR2160 integrated which seems to be well respected.

I purchased the RR2160 several months ago because my Vintage SX-1250 was in the shop and I had also been hearing and reading good things about it.  I have been amazed how good it sounds with both the Cornwalls I had at the time and the Forte III's I'm now using with it.  Great sounding DAC and Phono Stage to my ears. I also like the look which others quibble about.  The 1250 is back, but the Outlaw is still in use-though I have more than one system going. With their return policy it is easy to try out.

  17. A friend demonstrated to me (in his home) that at the distance I have them from each other-about 10 feet, they sound best not toed in at all.  I was very reluctant to believe this, but after a lot of experimentation (and differences in relation to the wall), I have agreed.  They do seem touchy about positioning, but I'm sure content (well at least momentarily) with the III's at the moment.

  18. I've determined not to worry about this debate at all, though it is always interesting to read about for a very few minutes.  Bottom line, I like Vinyl and do believe there is a difference.  It reminds me of photography in some ways.  Digital is fine, it is the standard and yet printing a photo on my large digital printer gives me little tactile joy-where working in the darkroom certainly did. I like getting up, cleaning a record to make sure I don't have any of the issues parodied by the box at the beginning of the topic.  I'm always reminded about how I kept my records but being so impressed by the "new" CD's, I stood with my very valuable turntable in my hands over the garbage can for several minutes before dropping it in and becoming a version of the thoroughly modern man of the moment.  A moment along with more than a few others I'd take back if given the opportunity. (Space-time rewind would be a nice feature).  I say, "don't worry, be happy", to each their own, etc.  I will recommend to anyone an experiment I conducted in the wive's absence of three weeks.  Rather than leaving the TV on our favorite flavor of news (doesn't matter which one, they are all lying bastards-oops, maybe I didn't mean that-yeah, yes I do).  I replaced too many hours of never ending "Breaking News/Lies" with about four hours a day of Vinyl, and a good deal of digital.  My life and attitude have been immeasurably improved.  Don't plan on going back, in fact I may shoot the TV before the next election cycle, since as Bill Murray said in one of his many great movies, "It just doesn't matter".
