  1. Capacitors can be damaged by too much heat being conducted by the leads into the body of the cap. A simple trick is to clip a small metal alligator clip to the lead between the solder point and the cap. Heat will get conducted into the clip before it gets to the cap.
  2. Got it. i am in the market for a new place to live. I'll keep this in mind.
  3. vertical as opposed to flat on the floor in the corner. That actually does work. My two side QPs are oriented that way with the woofers firing down. Whenever I get around to building the 2 for the back channels I am planning on hanging them from the ceiling. Ok, please confirm: so the 1/4 Pie works in an orientation where the the unit is on it's side, with the woofer facing down AND the broad side close to the front wall so the horn opening is towards the centre of the wall ?? This would only extend into the room about 20" while taking up about 8' of front wall space? (that is the mouth of the horn does not need to face the listener.)
  4. I would really love to, but they just won't fit in my 600 sq ft apartment... any creative ways of mounting them that will accommodate?
  5. Pull the K-33's from the Belles and put in Quarter Pies. Then you will have some REAL bass. How big are these again?
  6. Question: Eminance has the recommended enclosure volume for the Kappa 15C in a vented box as 2.8 cu.ft. I assume the advantage for going bigger is extended low end, but what is the trade off for going bigger?
  7. what'd you meant "the same woofer" ...?! life the actual same one in the Belle or just another pair of the same model?
  8. a 2-way system with a 510 can be very rewarding. and dead simple.
  9. Very cool. I look forward to seeing more of this. As I've said before, I would do the totally reversible bass reflex mod to any La Scalas I own. It's good that you have made yours reversible. If you add a sub, you might prefer the Bell Zillas without the reflex mod, or you might want to utilize it. Damn it... Now you've got me thinking about it again.
  10. Good call. It's nice to have options. Part of my issue as well, was not building the initial Belle horn with an open top: I would have to flip mine over. Also wondering what an aperiodic vent would do. I've always liked that 'sound'... oh well, maybe another time.
  11. Those Belles look great. You are really going to notice how increasing the thickness of the outer baffles and the horn brace improve the quality of the bass. It is a must for all clone builds, In my limited. I still can't believe how much the side wall moves on unbraced La Scalas. My Jubelles are sounding wonderful. I have kinda put the reflex cab on hold: honestly I am happy with the low-end I am getting in my space for the time being. (I live in a 600 sq ft wood frame apartment: the roll off at 45Hz means I can listen loud and not get complaints...). And, I like that it is all horn/sealed bass. I am also keeping an eye out for a pair of 402 lenses to try. So, I'm in no rush to put everything in a box and call them 'finished'. I believe I will build a 5-6" hollow riser in the near future and allow the doghouse to vent into that chamber; adding an extra 40 litres of volume may be a nice subtle boost... I need a proper riser anyways.
  12. I'll be attenuating a Faital Pro HF200. Used as a full range in a 2-way. I was hoping to avoid changing taps and cap values. Just heard from Bob, a non-inductive resistor in line should drop the level. Just wondering now if I have to make an L-pad and bridge a restore across the speaker terminals as well...
  13. hello, just a quick question. I have a stock, 2-way, Crites 500 XO. I was wondering if there was an easy way to attenuate the output of the horn a couple dB. Can I just put a 1 or 2 ohm resistor in line with the positive lead? Thanks
  14. Is this the case with all horns of this type? or would a shorter horn designed for the XO frequency beam less?
  15. Cool project. I love the look. How would one of these work as part of a 2-way system crossed around 400-500?
  16. yeah, I was excited to see the ad. I will follow up with the guy in a few days just to re-iterate my interest. see if I can sweet talk him.
  17. $2K is getting pricy, but I'll keep my eyes open. I like the co-ax approach, but I am also a 2-way guy. Don't really have the top or bottom octaves in my current set-up. And I honestly don't miss it.
  18. well, after all this; the gentleman decided not to sell... ...I guess I'm on the lookout for a pair of 402 horns now.
  19. It's a little secret right now Google doesn't allow secrets. http://vancouver.fi.craigslist.ca/van/ele/4977572581.html shipping to KY could be an issue.
