  1. These will be garage speakers for the rest of their hopefully long life. If all goes to plan though they will have a much nicer garage built around them in four to five years. Mark
  2. I ordered it from here: http://www.orangealuminum.com/bar-stock/angles.html I measured the trim from my HF bins and ordered the non-anodized mill stock. I'll report back once I receive the trim to let everyone know how close it matches. They carry the angle pieces, not the corners. Near as I can tell no one sells the Klipsch corner pieces. I spoke with Panacea last fall but they weren't up and running yet. I will talk to my Dad about it though. He worked in an aluminium foundry before retiring. Maybe he can point me towards where I can have some made. Mark
  3. Worked on filling the edges of the bass bin today. Got to try my hand at using bondo to rebuild corners. Eight of them to be exact. Here's my very first hand fabricated corner: Sort of proud of myself. Here's the front. I filled all the chips and sanded everything. Turned out better than I thought possible. I'm picking up the paint tomorrow on my way home from work. Part Express is on the way home. More or less. Mark
  4. Did a little more work today. Filled some nicks and voids with bondo on the HF bin and sanded everything smooth. Glued some loose edges too. It's ready to be primed. Got all the paint off the bass bin, top, sides, and bottom. Need to start filling and finish sanding it tomorrow. The edges are in incredibly bad shape. Too many years of hard service. So, l ordered metal corner protectors and aluminum trim strips that should look identical to what Klpsch uses. To be clear, it's the trim strips that have the same finish and dimensions as the strips on the HF bin. The corners Klipsch uses seem to be unobtainable as they are custom castings. I'll post photos later. Watching my Buckeyes stink it up now. Here are some photos: Inside front edge of HF bin. Delaminating back as far as faded paint. Used a thin plastic card to get glue under the edge. Clamped and sanded after drying. Smoothed out pretty well. Edge of HF cabinet had lost some of the top veneer. Filled with bondo. Looks OK. Will probably do another coat and sand again. Bass Bin, every edge looks at least this bad. I'll fill and smooth but ultimately all the edges will get aluminum trim. You eagled eyed fellows will see how round the corner is. Every corner was rotted and had to be taken back to solid wood. Ugly very ugly. Thanks for looking, Mark
  5. Thanks Roger, I'll check into that.
  6. Ok I've started the process on one speaker. I've rewired the terminal cup and replaced the 5 way connectors and fuse holders. One of the fuse holders was cracked so i just did everything. Only burned my finger once on the soldering iron. That's pretty good for me. Then I tore down the top bin and the bottom bin to begin stripping away years of paint. The bottom bin had in descending order, black, brick red, blue green, and the factory black paint on the top and sides. The back, bottom, and inside appear to be factory paint. I'll know for sure tomorrow. I used a paint stripper on the top and sides. It worked fairly well and didn't make as much of a mess as sanding. It did not do anything to the factory paint, I'll have to sand through that. The top bin was factory paint only, except the sides which had been painted over with two company names but I managed to sand through that well enough. Here's some photos so far: Top bin: And the base bin after getting through the paint to the bottom color: This is going to take just about forever to finish. However, I'm very stubborn (ask my dear sweet wife) and I will see it through. Mark
  7. That's a great idea. Thanks, Mark
  8. Well this thread took a turn to the dark side. I will start the tear down and refurb tomorrow. Have all the parts, need to get some paint remover and the Bondo. I'm off to buy stuff in the morning, any suggestions? I'm close to a Lowes, Home Depot, and a body shop supplier if I need something special. Thanks, Mark
  9. Thanks Tasdom! That thread is a classic. I hope I can do half as well as Mustang Guy did on that La Scala cabinet. Mark
  10. But, ugly is to the bones. Especially when it comes to girls, he, he. You said "but, ugly". Sorry could not help myself. :-) Mark
  11. The Bondo thread! An all time great. If you can find the thread by Mustang Guy please post a link. Anyone ever think to collect all the restoration threads and have the Admins Pin it at the top of this sub-forum? There's a ton of great information here. Mark
  12. Thanks, there's so much information here it makes deciding what direction to go Very hard. For now, I'm sticking with stock components. The previous owner did recap the AA networks and replaced the squawker diaphragms. With the K-33s I bought these should sound pretty close to original. Once I get used to that I can start down the upgrade path. Mark
  13. I think I'll try to make them look original. That's going to be hard enough for me. I'm much better at electrical and mechanical work than I am at woodworking. The weather this week will allow me to work on them in the evenings after work. Need to get some Bondo and start patching.
  14. I'm thinking of making them look as close to original as I can. They will my my dream garage speakers for the foreseeable future. Mark
  15. Not quite the Irish Rovers but this sounded quite nice cranked up: Mark
  16. Thanks guys. This forum is an absolute inspiration. I've never heard La Scala's before today. I've got a pair of Forte II's and think they sound pretty good. However, the LSI's are something different. I'm looking forward to some sanding, filling, more sanding and painting. Mark
  17. I bought these LSI's about a year ago. They need just about everything, woofers, wiring, fuse holders, and major cosmetic restoration. I decided to get them to play music first and replaced everything that was either broke or needed replaced. Bought K-33 woofers off that auction site and the rest from Parts Express. Put them back together over the past week. Turned them on this morning. My oh my they sound much better than I ever thought they could. My wife, who upon first seeing them said never bring them in the house, told me those ugly things sound really nice. So it looks like the upper and lowers are going to get refurbished. Here's what they look like now: I'll post more pics as I break them down and begin to work on the cabs. Mark
  18. Thanks again. I've seen that before and after tracing the wiring on my crossovers it's starting to make sense. Mark
  19. Thanks for you help mach-1! Very much appreciated. Mark
  20. Anyone with a photo of the wiring of the input cup? Sure seems like someone would have one. Thanks, Mark
  21. In checking the cups further is appears the LF fuse is on the inputs and the HF fuse is connected to the Squawker. Does that make sense? Thanks, Mark
  22. I'm rebuilding a pair of LaScala splits that I bought about a year ago. Right now they're a box of parts. First thing I notice is the wiring from the input cups are different for each. What makes it worse is I don't think either is correct. Does anyone have a photo or a schematic showing how the cups are supposed to be wired? There are two fuses holders, one labeled HF, for the tweeters? And one labeled LF. The HF is 1.5 amps the LF is 3 amps. Is the LF for the woofer or the squawker? I think the previous owner tried to recap the crossovers. Based on the wiring on the cups I'm going to replace the cross overs. I know this is a can of worms, but given I'm not going for appearance and these will be garage speakers what might you recommend? Appreciate your help. Mark
  23. I'm pretty sure they don't play with each others balls.I don't care who you are, that there's funny...
  24. Taken with a Leica M8 I used to own. Could never focus properly with it. Natural Bridge State Park, KY.
  25. You mean the idea of watching movies AT HOME...IN THE WOODS...with all that timber? But that's what makes it so unreal!!!
