  1. A weave makes more sense to me than PVC with holes punched in it. Apparently if you get a weave then tilt it when cutting, the pixel layout from the projector does not match up with the perforation pattern on the screen which cancels out video problems that these guys were talking about.
  2. One does not spend 22 large on two speakers without caring what they look like.
  3. The guys I have talked to were more concerned about video performance than audio, they said the perforations kill some of the resolution. Plus, yeah they like to sell huge and pretty speakers and weren't big on ugly ones that were meant to be hidden. Hiding $22,000 Revels behind an A/T screen doesn't make much sense. Both guys carried these. I like seeing my speakers but at the same time I don't like having a different center channel that is lower in height.
  4. Wondering who here likes them and who doesn't. I went to an extremely high end place that had like 6 showrooms with $7,000 Lexicon amps, $10,000 Revel and Wilson subwoofers, $22,000 a pair Revel towers, $26,0000 Sony projectors, every Klipsch speaker imaginable, every McIntosh component you can think of, had hundreds of thousands of dollars of this crap laying around everywhere, been in business for 40 years, etc., etc., etc... and the top guy there is basically saying to stay away from them unless they're absolutely necessary. This wasn't the first time this has happened either, same story in a different city. But, they have quite the fan base elsewhere. Thoughts?
  5. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/gravity-captain-phillips-box-office-650257 "As moviegoers began lining up for Gravity in early October, box-office observers predicted that the Saturday haul would increase by 5 percent over the Friday opening. But defying the normal pattern, Alfonso Cuaron's space epic shot up 32 percent on Saturday on its way to a $55.8 million opening, one of the top October debuts of all time. The secret? Instead of younger males, who typically turn out on Friday nights, the film drew older ticket buyers -- and especially baby boomers -- who waited a day to see favorites Sandra Bullock and George Clooney." http://www.thewrap.com/baby-boomers-driving-box-office-can-keep/ Baby Boomers have been the driving force at the box office of late, powering “Gravity” http://www.hollywoodbranded.com/baby-boomers-the-ideal-movie-going-audience-large-numbers-with-money-to-spend/ "The box office reign of one of the most successful films this year, ‘Gravity,’ is attributed to numerous reasons, one of them being its prominent appeal to Baby Boomers." http://millionairecorner.com/Content_Blog/If-You-Film-It-Baby-Boomers-Will-Come.aspx "82 percent of “Gravity’s” audience was over 25 and 60 percent over 35" So, what is absurd about this statement again?
  6. Yeah, just seems like everything I pick up is 5 channel or at best has weak ambience. Green Day concert last night? 5 channel. However, watched a good chunk of Godzilla too, based on that and the strong material on Edge of Tomorrow, I think mine are a little far apart. But, I'm not sure I can do much about it. Ideally I'd have two rows of three seats and the front seats would be pretty far away from the rear surrounds. I have one row of four and the back is 4' away from the wall. Ambience and mono signals are fine but when there are separate signals that are strong, the seats on the outsides are at a pretty low angle from the furthest back surround, and there's not as much separation between them and the side surrounds as I expected, basically rear surround still sounds kinda like side surround due to the angle. I may have to close them up a little.
  7. I watched half of it last night, I agree about the LFE, much better than most movies mainly due to the wide variety of sounds rather than just the same low thud over and over.
  8. Just because it happened in space doesn't make it good science fiction. Good science fiction is at least somewhat intelligent and geeky. This just wasn't. I don't consider it science fiction at all really but I guess technically it fits the definition. For some reason older people really liked it. It did really well at the box office due to the 50-60 somethings showing up in droves, probably because they were alive during the moon landings and whatnot.
  9. Watching green days American idiot concert. The mix sounds like doo doo. I used to be all about it for some reason.
  10. I'm getting a JVC X700R. At this point I have played around with an entry level Epson, Sony 55 whatever it is, JVC 4910, and a $26,000 4K. The Sony 55 seems to be a pretty good deal however the picture wasn't exactly amazing, it just looked like a mediocre TV that was really big. Basically those new cheap Sharp Aquos's that are like 80" and costs $1,200... the Sony's picture is about on that level, just doesn't have the depth that I'm used to. Blacks surprised me though, much better than expected. The Sony 4K had awesome colors but quite honestly it wasn't the resolution that impressed me, it was the depth of colors. Of course some of this is due to the source material, but I'm picky about stuff looking washed out, and I could notice this on the cheaper one. At 10' or even half that I could not see any pixels on a 1080p projector on a 106" screen so I don't see the point in 4K without going much bigger to be honest, you're not going to sit closer than that with a projector, and even if you did you'd have the picture shining on the back of your head, it's a waste of money for the resolution alone. The JVC 4910 was in between but the X700R has over twice the contrast, should be significantly better. Most people don't have the bat-cave flat black setup like I do though so I'm not sure what gain to get on my screen yet.
  11. I should also disclose that I've had my system in place for a whopping 2 1/2 weeks. They didn't get on the wall until October 20. Haven't exactly had time to go rent a bunch of blu-rays in that time. All of Netflix is all 5.1, both Metallica and STP's concerts are 5.1, most kids movies are 5.1... installing it differently ain't going to help with that.
  12. That's the other issue, I still need to maintain a little bit of hearing. AV receivers just need to come with a pro mixing board and blu rays have a separate channel just for kick drums and another for bass guitar. Problem solved.
  13. Yeah I thought it was pretty dumb to be honest. From Sandra Bullock's moaning in such a way that she would know which way is up, to George's trademark demeanor even in this ridiculous situation, to the absurdity of finding a perfectly operational yet unmanned space station just conveniently hanging out, the whole thing was ill conceived.
  14. What amp do you have on your RF-7's? I just have a Marantz SR-7009 receiver right now, will have a Marantz separate amp soon. Did hear RF-7ii's on a $7,000 200x7 amp last night though, dynamics were SWEET. Still don't think you could get the kind of gut wrenching volume I'm talking about though.
  15. Some specs I've seen have been 7.1.4 while normal surround is 7.2. But, it's really the same thing, just because they say 7.1.4 doesn't necessarily mean you only have one sub output. They're purposely trying to confuse everybody I think. Really all sub material is one channel anyway so I guess that's why they do that.
  16. That's with live sound where the low end of the signal crest factor is typically in the 14-18 dB range. With recorded playback, achieving those level of transients is a whole 'nother challenge because, given the source material, the information simply isn't there. This is why us horn guys are always comparing and often times complaining about the DR rating of certain albums. Live sound technique to home sound is not necessarily a direct translation. There are certain caveats to be aware of. I could care less about accurate orchestra music, I want to sound like I'm inside a hard rock concert. I used to be in a band where we sent the kick drum and sometimes my bass through six pro audio Yamaha 18's and I was 10 feet away. It was nothing short of amazing. I've been chasing that sound ever since. It may not be totally possible but I got quite a bit closer with my last setup, running two RF-7ii's full range with two 15's right behind me. I got a good low thump that I can feel and the RF-7ii's handle the attack well, the sound of the beater on the skin seems to come from the screen and the thump follows so it sounds cool. But, it's just not the same. The initial attack and upper realm of what concert subs would typically handle is nowhere near as powerful. The RF-7ii's actually do sound pretty accurate on good kick drum material but the power you get from live sound just isn't there. There seems to be a gap in the home, this black hole that exists somewhere between subs and mains that you get on live sound. I think you could almost do it if you had pro audio 18's up front that handled a wider range of frequencies, definitely higher than the 80 hz that most people cross over at for home theater subs. But, that's going to screw other things up, voices and bass guitars would sound boomy since there's no dedicated channel that you're boosting like you can at a concert. So yeah I'm probably chasing unicorns that are ridden by leprechauns but yeah live sound in the home is what I'd like to achieve. When you boost the subs in the home to boost the kick drums then things will just sound sloppy. I keep viewing this as a shortcoming of my subs but maybe it goes well beyond that because I get similar results with both the Klipsch R-SW115 and two sealed Ultimax 18's with an iNuke 6000 on them. The fast attack that you get on live sound subs just doesn't exist. You can shake the room and your chair but it just isn't the same. Getting RF-7ii's and running them full range is the biggest thing that helped with this sound but I can't get the kind of volume you need to pound your chest in with them.
  17. http://www.audio-issues.com/music-mixing/surefire-frequencies-for-a-better-kick-drum-sound/ "60 hz will make the kick hit you n the stomach." That guy is an audio engineer but I imagine there are plenty of other sources as well.
  18. http://www.audio-issues.com/music-mixing/how-to-use-eq-to-improve-your-kick-drum-sound/ This article breaks down the kick drum frequencies and recommends a high pass filter at 50 hz then boost 80-100 for a good low thump. thats not how most people think subs should work.
  19. Who says it's 60-70 Hz? That's a wavelength of order 5 m... It has to be much higher than that if we are talking resonance... Its a well known thing. As for resonance of our internal organs, its actually much lower, the true resonant frquency of our organs is like 7 hz. Either us or the french even weaponized it.
  20. The punch is actually the sound waves hitting you at the frequency your chest resonates at. Distortion has nothing to do with it. The punch that you feel in your chest with kick drums is about 60 hz or a little higher. Concert sound guys boost this frequency to turn up the excitement. Problem is, stiff, heavy, and inefficient subs just cant pull it off all that well, it will often sound mushy and sloppy at high volumes. Efficient pro audio subs made out of paper do it really well.
  21. I just saw a revel 18 an hour ago. Just get one of those. It was only $10,000. yes for one.
  22. You're one of the few people on this planet that I know of who knows what a nice pro audio 18 sounds like. For music they're pretty killer, I like the punch and detail that they have on drums and bass guitar.
  23. Do you have a picture of all your stuff inside that one? Not sure I like the silver handle but otherwise it would suffice. I saw a big bank of a couple million bucks worth of EMC2 racks recently... Pictures don't do it justice, totally badass.
  24. Why do people do this? I don't understand it. Some of these sound guys need to go shooting before they try to reproduce what they think it sounds like. "3 days to kill" does this, drove me nuts, big subwoofer blast every time a pistol went off. Pretty dumb.
