  1. DR Who Actually, I'm pretty happy with my music room at this point..I think the 3 bass traps in the one high ceiling corner actually do a great job! I have done the trick of walking around, etc, and that was where I found the most bass congestion, hence the traps. The others I just threw in, experimenting, thinking more is better, and again, they deadened the mids/highs to the point I had to remove them. As for moving the speakers, well..they ARE the Khorns, and where they are is pretty much where they'll stay! All in all, with my recent tweaks, the room is the best I've heard it! I don't plan to change anything..well..I must admit I have my eye on a Wright AG-1000 tube preamp to replace my Adcom..(damn sickness!) But other than that........ Steve
  2. that didn't shut it down Fini?? Ha..
  3. Dan I think my KHorns image just fine..but with a center channel, everything is "filled in" a little better. Of course, I just fixed my "too loud too fast" volume problem (another thread) so I hear things a lot better now. My room is 21 x 15, with a sloped ceiling, and that may throw things off a little..but I've tweaked the room with bass traps, and tapestries, and I'm really pleased with the sound. Oh yeah..I think the ALK crossovers may have something to do with it. And, like I've stated many times before, as soon as I get too complacent with my system, I go listen to someone elses non Klipsch system..and I run home as fast as I can!! Steve
  4. So Mark how did you come up with the placement of the foam? Just curious, as I have tried many different configurations of my LERND bass traps, and I am down to 3 in the corner behind my listening position, on the high wall end..(sloped ceiling) I have tried more, (up to 8 at one time) along the back wall to ceiling joints, but that was too much, and actually deadened (if that's a word!) the room too much..I'm pretty happy with just three..but now I feel the other 5 are wasted! So again..how'd you come up with the placement? Thanx Steve
  5. Hi Leo I did the vacuum seal on the amp, as I always worry when anything goes thru the mail..don't want it to get exposed to rain, and get wet! I figured that was the light pipe floating around, after I emailed yuo when I first got it.. Anyway, thanx again..and really, if you ever build any more, I'd like to purchase one. Many thanx again, Steve
  6. A very Happy Birthday from Alaska Amy! Hopefully, Fini won't shut this one down! Steve
  7. agreed! I said I'd definitely buy one if he's continue building them! Well, two..a stereo one for the KHorns, and a mono for the Belle! He'd probably end up in Stereophile with Mark! Steve
  8. A while back I was having some issues with my system, (which I have since resolved with an inline volume attenuator), but while I was having these problems, Leo was kind enough to offer a loan of his P6D digital amp so I could troubleshoot my components. I accepted his generous offer, and I must say, I was thoroughly impressed with the little mighty mite! I put it in place of my stereo duty SET300B and I could hardly tell the difference! (ok, insert your joke here) Maybe a little detail difference in the highs, but I could easily live with the digital amp! And no changing tubes either, no heat to boot!! Anyway, it was quite the device! Leo apparently put this together before the digital amp rave caught on, before other companies started mass marketing their like amps, at a lower mass marketed price. Too bad, because Leo could have cornered the market! Kelly (mobilehomeless) has one, and understandably so, wrote a glowing review of the unit, comparing it to his Moondogs, I believe. A high compliment, indeed. My main reason for this blog is to thank Leo for his loan, and to reaffirm that this is a great forum, with great people, even if we can all disagree sometimes, and even get a little hot headed. It's still a pretty good family. Heck, we put the fun in dysfunctional. Thanx again, Leo. You are truly a gentleman. Regards, Steve
  9. true, but who's gonna be awake after 8 hours of listening, and sipping the suds?? Problem solved!
  10. As much as I love my Klipschorns, the biggest complaint I've had is that I virtually have no volume control when playing CDs..on the volume scale from 1-10, I'm lucky to use 2..and the problem is that going from 0-2 is too low to too loud..it's a hair trigger! I never had that problem with LPs, but of course, the input voltage is a lot lower! That said, about 3 weeks ago I decided to try my Niles line level control between my CD (and a separate DVD player) player and my preamp. Let me digress first..years ago, when I first joined this BB, I had the same complaint. Someone suggested I get this box and put it between my preamp and amp..and I did, for about 6 months. I had more volume control, but it seemed like I was missing something. I don't know what..it just didn't sound right to me. Anyway, I took it out, and left it out. This was about 2001.. This time is so different..I also cannot explain it. The way I set it up was like this. I took an LP, and the same selection on CD, and switched back and forth, changing the attenuator on the Niles box, so the CD volume would match the LP volume, with the preamp volume in the same position. After I had that set, I listened to many CD selections, and was amazed at what I heard! Where the top end used to be too loud, and there was no bottom end, everything was now on an even keel. All instruments now sounded equal i.e. the bass, guitar, drums, etc. were matched! I now had a listenable volume control, using 0-6! I could gradually change things..what a revelation! I thought it was a fluke! I grabbed CD after CD, especially the ones I had written off as being "unlistenable" and was I surprised! They were actually quite good! What really came back, was the "toe tapping" factor! I forgot what equipment I was listening to, for the first time in years! I was just groovin' with the music, not caring what I had in the chain! This happened to coincide with my loan of a digital amp, from our very own Leok. He sent it to me to see if the problem was with my 300B amps..and no, of course it wasn't! I actually had this Niles box revelation a day or two before I got Leo's loaner. I did put the loaner in the system to try it, and that's probably another thread, but I must say I don't think I could have picked one from the other in a blind test! Leo's amp was that good! I wrote Leo and explained my findings with the Niles box. He explained the (pleasant) sound I was now hearing with the Niles in place was probably due to various gain stages in my CD/preamp/amp audio chain. I wasn't getting the full bandwidth. The Niles certainly leveled the playing field! Anyway, I didn't want to post my results until I was sure I wasn't fooling myself! I have listened intently now, for 3 solid weekends, 3 nights a weekend..and I have to say I've never been happier with my set up! I even threw the Bob Carver true sub back into the system, set the crossover at 45Hz, and it is all seamless! I have to say I am estatic! I feel like I have a whole new collection of music, everything is so "listenable"! I know every purist out there is probably cringing..but I must say, I couldn't be happier! Now I'm on my way to listen to some more tunes! Equipment be damned, I just want to hear the music!! Steve
  11. to each their own, the Cornwalls can really hit you with the non horn loaded bass..but I've had them both, and the KHorns win..hands down..in my opinion..no contest. My 02¢.. Steve
  12. Actually, the Doors did go on..with two albums, and Ray Manzarek covering the vocals..I have one of the albums (on CD too) aptly titled "Other Voices"..but it wasn't the same. Can't remember the name of the other one.. And of course, Townsend and Daltrey are coming out with "Who 2" this year..wonder how that will be ??
  13. Lascala Dan yer right on about Roger Water's "pros and Cons of Hitchhiking", I have all 3 of his CD releases..love 'em all, partial to "Amused to Death"..I have "In the Flesh" also on DVD..great, great concert! Oldbuckster, I wasn't trying to stir things up..I do wish PF would reconcile. Both parties have done good since the "breakup"..I enjoy both camps, but I think the "whole" would be great! That's all my comment meant. And take the advice, get "In the Flesh"..think you'd enjoy it! Steve PS..I do know the early PF days...Relics/Meddle/etc..DSOTM was releasd in my "formidable" years, so it's my favorite..though "Wish You Were Here" and "Animals" run a close tie..
  14. thought I missed something there..and you're right about the dynamic range..seems this has been discussed before...
  15. Oldbuckster you are absolutely correct!! I bought the DVD a couple of weeks ago, seeing a review posted here on the BB..I didn't even know it existed until then (great thing this forum) but I have had the CD since it came out many years ago. I agree, the Dark Side of the Moon disc (2) is amazing! Sure was nice to see it performed in it's entirety! The only thing I wish, is that Roger Waters was still there..after all, he wrote all the lyrics. However, Gilmour does do a good job of carrying on! Now I guess I need to watch disc 1!! Steve
  16. OK I"ll throw my two cents in..I replaced my ordinary (don't know what type it was) speaker wire years ago with Audioquest Indigo, 15 feet each. (of course, it's copper) I noticed an immediate improvement, and I had my wife give it a listen (without telling her what I did) and she stated there was a definite, noticeable improvement, that being everything was "clearer" "more defined" etc. etc. Well, you get the picture. Anyway, years later, after reading everything on this BB, I got to thinking, I probably was fooling myself. I wanted to rearrange my components, and the 15 feet wasn't going to do it. So I bought some Monster cable (yes, I too remember it when it was the "expensive" cable) to replace the Audioquest, moved all the components and hooked it up, thinking what a dope I was to have bought the Audioquest in the first place. Well, was I surprised..again. It was like someone threw a blanket over the tweeter and horn. I tried and tried to get used to it, but I went back to the current set up, and I'm glad I did! Now, is the Audioquest better, or is the Monster that bad?? I'd love to try the Home Depot wire everyone's been talking about!! I really want to rearrange my room, but I'm not giving up the sound!! If the HD lampcord would sound the same as the AQ, then I'd gladly replace it. The AQ wasn't THAT expensive, so I'm not trying to qualify my purchase. Is all copper equal? Or does solid (AQ) vs. stranded (MC) make a difference? AL? Bob?? I certainly can't comment on silver..never heard it/ have no desire..especially if it makes things brighter!! Thanx Steve
  17. yeah, you done good Jim! If this guy backs down now..well..it's all over! Hopefully, the compromise will be a dedicated music room! That's what I got! Steve
  18. and I posted this in 2 channel as I watch DVD concerts in 2 channel also! Anyway.. I finally watched my Cream Reunion DVD last night, in it's entirety. As a former (and I mean a long, long time ago!) drummer, I watched the song "Toad" with my mouth agape! I couldn't believe Ginger Baker's drum solo! It was so musical, it sounded like he was being accompanied, although both Clapton and Bruce had left the stage! Words can't describe how fluid he was, and I don't think he ever broke a sweat! I've listened to Cream music since their inception in the 60's..and I don't think I'll ever listen to them in the same way again! Besides all the other songs, which were all great (I do wish SWLABR was on there!) this song alone is worth the price of the DVD!! Just wanted to recommend it..I'm sure Oldbuckster has it already!! 5 stars! Steve
  19. I see our own JIm Tidwell answered her, and it was an excellent answer..but she's talking about Belles, not KHorns. The answer he wrote still stands though!! Good job Jim!! Steve
  20. Paul I have been none of the above..and I've "contributed" to this thread.I'm always looking to tweak my system, and at the time, the SET amp produces the most desirable sound I have heard on my KHorns. I am more than open to new amps, but at this point, not open to spend more money -without- auditioning first! As stated in other posts, I'd love to hear some VRDs, Crowns, etc. I tried McIntosh tubes, and for some reason, I didn't like it..not bad mouthing them, I just (so far) preferred the sound of 300B 8 watt amps.. As for facts, well..maybe the SET is clipping...if it is, I can't tell. I probably don't have it loud enough to clip! 85-90 db, maybe 95db peaks? At least that's what the meter says. My biggest complaint is how fast digital recordings come on making the volume control knob too touchy! But that's another topic.. Steve
  21. Jack that set up is absolutely beyond words! What a great room, I am indeed envious! And I thought a dedicated music room was something to brag about! I'm not kidding, my jaw dropped too! Congrats on your Khorns..although I feel mine are fussy at times, and am always "tweaking" be it the equipment or the room..the one thing that is constant is the Khorns! Like I have stated over and over, everytime I hear someone elses speakers, I know why I have the horns. And like stated before by others, what a great spread you have! You have the room we have in Alaska, but you also have the sunshine! That's a plus! Again, enjoy it all! Steve
  22. A hearty congrats! Working on 21 myself!! And happy like you. But what happened to your wife's arm? Was it the champagne toast?? Steve
  23. Hardhead, thanx for the link and the info..I will definitely try it! Leo..email sent..thanx! Regards, Steve
  24. Leo that's an extremely generous offer! What exactly is/does a P6D amp do? Thanx Steve
