  1. I’m selling my black RP 280’s. Unfortunately we moved to a wayyy smaller house (but acquired land with the deal which is why we bought it)and there’s just no room for any sort of speaker setup, not even these. It’s back to using dreaded TV speakers until I finish the basement for now. Either they’re going in storage with the others or they will find a new home. $850 including original boxes. Not really wanting so ship them. They’re located in Springfield, IL.

  2. Can’t wait to get my 456’s up and running myself. Ultimately I’ll probably end up modifying them to 942’s when some k402’s come up for sale but until then I’m getting some crites networks so I can enjoy them as-is.

I seriously would not be concerned about the learning curve involved with active xovers like xilica. Once you run sweeps and see where the trouble spots are then its just a matter of "correcting" with that particular frequency. I'm very new to all this pro stuff but it honestly is not hard to figure out. If your concerned about cost try one of the minidsp's they are very affordable and easy to adjust. Just remember there are trade off with lower cost units. If you want to go passive you can get 942 networks on ebay for around 50 bucks.

If I went active then I’d definitely get a Xilica. I tend not to get budget stuff, I don’t like having to mess around with replacing things later or dealing with issues later on down the road because I tried to go the cheap route. I know absolutely nothing about all the active stuff except for altering EQ settings and if needed, inputting crossover settings. Anything regarding correcting frequencies and trouble spots and all that is beyond me. I like to set it and forget it. I don’t want to be tinkering for months trying to get it sounding right. I’d probably have to enlist the help of someone who’s done this before. But 1st things 1st, where are all the 402’s at??? Those damn horns never come up for sale and Klipsch won’t sell them without buying the whole speaker. I might be waiting quite awhile to get these up and running. At this rate, if I decide to go active I’ll have the Xilica wayyyy before I get a pair of the horns.

@boricua2480 I did not think there was anything mean or inappropriate about your post, and I understood the other issues that you raised.  It is true that I don't talk much about my setup but that is in part because I am not sure how many people would understand transforming RF-5 into RC-7 and enjoying it.  I kind of worry that people would say that I am missing something and demonstrating my inexperience by not getting a pair of the new but already legendary RF-7 iii.  So it seems in an add way that others might relate more to wanting an older speaker and not being able to find it.  And truth be told, I keep mentioning the CF-4 just in case someone here has a pair that they will part with.

As for your CF-4, they were born of hate, and if you hated to part with them, that would be poetic justice.  And what could be more sentimental than ending my journey and my endless posts about my quest for a pair of CF-4?  Lastly, if you sold them and someone here did not get at least a chance at them, you would be confronted by a concerted cascading chorus of complete and comprehensive condemnation of your character by the collective crew here (that alliteration is from my first year professor in law school that I still remember 28 years later - my classmate and friend leaned over to me and said "holy alliteration batman") that would follow. This last paragraph was one of those jokes that don't read like jokes.  I hope you least let them out on occasion and listen to them.

Well I wouldn’t worry what anyone told me about my setup and you shouldn’t either. You already have an awesome setup. I bought my CF-4’s when I went to the Klipsch dealer and told them to play Pink Floyd DSOTM and AC/DC Thunderstruck and they did a great job getting the hairs on my arms to stand up so I bought them, even though at the time I REALLY wanted the Ref 7’s that just came out. Since then when I got the 4’s I’ve heard others that give me that same feeling and more (Cornwall’s, khorns, and some B&Ws are at the top of that list) but regardless, I purchase what makes my music come alive. If someone told me I was wrong or missing something in a setup I enjoyed then it really wouldn’t make any difference to me. I know what I like. But at this point in time, I’m not selling mine. I’m going to continue to horde until there’s nowhere left to put them. Then I’ll get a commercial space with a loading dock like the guy I bought my 456’s from. No joke. He had a loading dock. That’s how deep the rabbit hole can go. Thats when you know you’ve made it.

  5. Work is slow right now so I figured I’d check the responses. For future reference, if I ever respond to anything here and if it sounds rude or whatever, that’s not ever how it’s supposed to come out so don't take it as any sort of divisive attack on a member here. I type the same way I talk to my friends, usually sarcastic and waiting for a smart *** remark back because that’s how we talk to each other. Sometimes I read my texts and wonder how others would take a response and now I know the answer. Anyway, point is I haven’t read any of your posts I just saw what seemed like several posts on the same topic in different categories and after I started to feel the extreme obsession you had in finding these I thought I’d give you an insight from someone who has a pair and maybe grab you by the ankles out of the rabbit hole for a bit so in the meantime while you’re waiting for a pair to come up, that maybe you could try another pair that are as good or better.

In response to your point about anyone that has them not wanting to give them up, idk, I have enjoyed mine for a long time now but in my opinion they won’t be my end-all speakers, I just have a hard time letting go of ANY of my speakers. But after several moves over the years they only really sounded great in my last house on the long wall with 12 ft ceilings and after countless hours playing with location and angles and different receivers and amps. And then I had to move to the current house that has no room for anything until I finish the basement which sucks.

The only reason I keep mine are because it would be too hard to find another pair if I decided I wanted to be nostalgic and get another set. When it’s all said and done I’ll have my kp-456’s morphed into kpt-942’s and that may very well be my last speaker set...until I find jubilee bass bins...then THAT’ll be it...not really though. See my point? Lol.

Keep up the search and you’ll find them. I’m on the prowl for some k-402’s myself so I fully get the non stop search so someone doesn’t get them 1st. But when I saw people sticking up for you and after rereading my post (which I wrote half asleep on the couch because it was a cold, rainy day), I realized how quickly a sarcastic post turns some people into taking sides and turning tribal, and diagnosing every detail, it was ultimately just to put a little birdie in your ear and get you thinking of all the other alternatives until you do find a pair. The 4’s do come up, just not often. I’ve had alerts setup for years on these and I get emails on every pair that comes up but rarely. But in my opinion, if I didn’t have the Epics and a I saw a pair of nice 4’s and I also saw a really nice pair of La Scalas or Khorns, for instance, and I had to buy only one pair at that moment, it would be either one of the heritage line all day long. They are just awesome sounding. The draw to the 4’s is that they’re rare, not sure why either because the Legends come up way more often and are similar for the most part. Maybe they didn’t make as many of this series? Idk. Anyway, good luck. You’ll get your pair, just be patient. They do come up on occasion.

I guess you never heard of Jonah and the whale.  It's the thrill of the hunt.  B)

I've looked for various audio items at a certain price points, sometimes for years.  It's a lot of fun to research, to learn, to share with others who are of a like mind.  If you don't like Mr. @vasubandu's stories about his search for a certain speaker, then don't read it.

I do NOT mean that in a mean way, it's just some of us like following the stories while accepting some don't.

I don't read threads about tube amps.  I don't dislike those who talk about them, and I don't tell them to stop talking about it just because I'm not personally interested.  I simply don't read them because it's not my cup of tea.

I think my point was mostly that I’d rather just keep the personal blog posts like this thrill of the hunt as you called it in a different category other than alerts. I search here for stuff I wanna buy or stuff that’s available for sale that I’d want to check out, not read people’s personal endeavors deeeeeeeeeep into the CF-4 rabbit hole lol. That’s probably where most of my frustration stemmed from. That plus the multitude of new posts about the same thing. I’ve never seen so many new threads from the same person about the same topic all over the place and that’s probably why I felt the need to comment, which I rarely ever do.

Anyways like I told the op, whom the post was directed to in the first place not to take it the wrong way, it’s the breakdown in communication over text, which is why I don’t post much because more often than not people tend to take things way differently than intended on a computer vs in person.

Part of my point was trying to bring up an alternate point of view that maybe trying out different speakers that do come up for sale such as some heritage gear for instance, but if he kept an eye out that he’d find some Epics eventually but maybe try something else out in the meantime while he patiently waits. Just thinking outside the box since if all anyone ever talked to me about was Legends, then it would probably never occur to me to try anything else out or that anything else was worth trying out. Hell I never looked into the pro stuff ever until a month ago. I wasn’t interested in any of it. Now I want some 402’s for my setup, when 2 months ago my ultimate setup was gonna consist of khorns. So by me just trying something else out that wasn’t part of my original plan changed my long term speaker goals quite a bit. But to respond, I’m not selling my Epics for the simple reason that I used my first paycheck to buy them from a job I HATED and it’s the only good thing that came out of that job. So it’s sentimental more than anything. Otherwise I would sell them. If I ever do, someone on this forum would likely be the new owners. Good luck.

  7. Come ON MAN! What is up with this obsession with these speakers. You do realize Klipsch makes like 50 other types that are WAY easier to come by and a lot of them are enjoyed MORE than the Epics right? Don’t get me wrong, Epics are great but you can’t just make these things appear just because you want them. Take it from a guy that’s had a pair of these since like 1998, you’ll never be perfectly happy with whatever speakers you buy. You’ll ALWAYS be looking for cleaner, clearer, more imaging, better vocals, etc. The search for the ultimate audio experience will never stop, so why not take all this energy in searching for something that literally pops up once every 2 years (if that) and try something else out. For instance, I heard a pair of Cornwall’s on a McIntosh tube amp and preamp and it’s one of the best sounding setups I’ve heard in years. And it’s something you could come up with in a very short time period if you so chose.

What I’m getting at here is we don’t need to hear about every single hit and miss with a pair that we all know you DONT HAVE or else we’d be hearing about your take on them after setup. We wanna hear about YOUR EXPERIENCE with the setup you actually have. We wanna hear about what you like and don’t like about YOUR SETUP, not some emails and conversations you had with strangers about how close you were but ultimately didn’t buy.

If you really want a pair, keep an eye out and you’ll eventually get em. Just please, for **** sake don’t make up another post about ANOTHER pair that got away. At this rate you’ll be flooding this site for years to come about not having a pair of speakers you want, which is a boring subject man. Try something else out. Just because they’re rare doesn’t make them the best. Good luck with your pursuit, but can we hear about the speakers you actually have and enjoy? Lol Sorry for the rant man, don’t take my response the wrong way but I feel like someone needs to be giving you alternatives that you may very well like better. Good luck.

Hi Vasubandu - been vicariously following/lurking on your CF-4 efforts where I have been passively searching longtime for a singular CF-4 to sit between my Forte IIs - displacing Academy as my center.   I am here locally in Phoenix and if can help in any manner, glad to help out.  Likewise, if you for some reason have desire or reason to split a pair - I can be your guy;)  Keep up the postings, appreciate your adventures!

    Best Regards,

    Rick

Im curious why not find another Forte as a center? That would be relatively easy to come by. A CF-4 seems like an odd match when there’s others that are more closely matched to the Forte...I.E. another Forte.

I have a SINGLE CF-3 and a SINGLE CF-4 that someone can talk to me about if they're interested.  They need some cosmetic touch-up but both are electronically and sonically sound.

I’m probably not in a financial situation to be buying more speakers, and not even sure you’d be interested in shipping it, but if you are, PM me your asking price for the single CF-4 and I’ll see if I can swing it. Id love to have a center to match my CF-4’s up front. If shipping isn’t an option it’s cool.

I have been reporting the scam ads for years. It is a tiresome, but I can't slack off when I observe people doing bad things.

On a separate note of people doing bad things, what’s with people bidding on an item and jacking up the price when there’s anything over 15 seconds left in the auction. Why do they do that? Do they think if they bid within the first 5 days of a 6 day listing that somehow they’ll remain the highest bidder and win the auction? eBay bidders make me want to throat punch people.

Since you have the amplifier channels, I would recommend going active with a Xilica or Electravoice Xover.

You will be able to tune the system very nicely and EQ the speakers very easily.

The Xilica from the limited info I’ve had time to review looks incredibly complicated and super expensive. When I was into car audio I had the Zapco DC EQ which seems a lot like the Xilica and I could never really figure out how to dial it all in properly. I wonder if the local Klipsch dealer has any experience with it because I’d get frustrated and it would sit for months before I’d gather the patience to mess with it again. I know how I am with computer stuff and I don’t have the patience lol.

It is a fraudulent ad. Please report it to eBay. On the ad page, click on "Report item", then there is a sequence of 3 drop menus. If you report it as "Avoiding eBay fees", that is the best way to get eBay's computer program's attention, to have the ad removed.

As for the fraudulent ad, the pictures were lifted from an actual sale back in 2010. Now someone is using these pictures to lure victims into sending money or credit info to a G-mail address on the web page accessed by clicking on "SEE FULL ITEM DESCRIPTION".

Please report this and all the other similar fraudulent ads to eBay.

I’ve been reporting those for MONTHS and eBay can’t keep it under wraps. As soon as I report it, 3 more pop up.

You can have grills made.  Here I'm fitting one on my 684.

Yep that’s exactly what I’m after. I’m not attempting to do a metal grill myself. Who do I contact when I’m ready for that mod? And who’s got wiring directions for the kp-456’s using two 4 channel amps (that can be bridged) and crites networks? I’ve never had separate terminals like this before.

Yeah; me too ... wanted to (walnut) reveneer mine but got one "estimate" for $1500 :(  So, build a separate box for the horns and just used the "industrial paint." Looks pretty good and "passed" the WAF. :)

I’m also wanting some metal grills like those Frankensteins. Those look nice!

Mine were finished at an auto body shop where they sanded the industrial finish, kept the rounded edges and then sprayed with automotive paint. I was told sanding the OE finish was a bitchh! They were sprayed gloss gray with the EV horn painted a red-orange. They were unique and very cool.

I’m curious what the appx cost was to sand and paint these at the body shop. I might be interested in doing something similar for mine.

I'm about to do that with a pair of 904's (same LF cab as the 456). You can get 942 networks cheap.

Yeah I figured Crites could do the networks because I thought I read somewhere that he’s done them before, but I wasn’t sure if anyone’s ever done this exact setup. I’m thinking about doing something like the “Frankensteins” that were on here in the past with the orange horn, but instead I’d want to use the 402’s instead of whatever was used on that setup. Big, “hemi orange” painted 402’s would be sick.

    Hi Guys.
I'm looking for a variety of vintage high end tube Pre/Amps. Single piece or huge collections. Top of the line models from brands like Brook, Western Electric, Marantz & McIntosh. Ect Ect.  Some of my favorite Speakers are Altec 820's Electrovoice Patricians & Jensen imperials. Of course I want to hear about other top of the line brands & models.
Please inbox all msgs.  I'm located in Rockford IL. Distance is no problem since I travel a lot. Looks like I might be traveling to Nebraska in the next couple weeks. If you have any gear in Iowa or Nebraska please let me know. Thanks Rick

Ps. I might be parting with my Black 1986 K-Horns

Curious about your black khorns. Pm me if and when you decide to sell. I may be interested.

Thanks to you, the thread is now alive!  B)

I enjoy my CF-4's every day and generally like hearing about all things Epic.

Well then in that case I'll share my setup, CF-4's version 1, Integra DTR 60.6 receiver (used as preamp and to run the surround back speakers only) two Bryston 8B-ST amps (one bridged to 2 channel for 400 watts to the CF-4's, and the second has 2 channels bridged to power the KV-4 center channel, and the remaining 2 channels powering the surround left and right speakers.

The epics were always good, but I felt they were always missing something. Once I got the new Integra they sounded really good, and when I hooked them up to the Bryston they sounded like totally different speakers. Plus I've spent probably 20 hours total with placement which is key. These things image like no other. I bought some RP-280f's and used them for several months but went back to my epics. For music they're awesome, which is my main focus. So placement and power were the biggest factors for mine. Plus now I mainly listen to vinyl and added a Budgie phono preamp and it's all I'd ever need, unless I find some khorns or la scala's that catch my eye, but for now I'm sticking with this setup. I've had these epics since 2000 and they've gone through many receivers and many listening rooms but this setup is by far the best.
