  1. Exactly why I went with the Type A for my '77 La Scala's. $200 less and no diodes to disconnect. Even with the dreaded(by some) Sonicaps they sound just fine to me and no distortion. Almost as smooth as the original 44 year old AA's but with just a pinch more top end sparkle.
  2. Got the Type A's today, got them in and so far so good. I tried on vs. the old AA first, and really couldn't hear all that much difference, certainly not negative difference. A little sharper up top then the original's, but nothing causing me to run for cover. Maybe it's that they're A's, instead of AA's. Maybe it's just using old tube gear. Maybe it's that my soon to be, shellshocked over time 65 year old ears can deal with it. Who knows? Who cares? But at least I know that they're mildly updated and I'm happy about that.

  4. To answer your question, no I don't think you need. Your speakers go pretty low as is. Do you feel you're missing something. Of course, I use La Scala's and I don't need/want a sub, so maybe I'm not the right person to ask. Size room, how loud you listen, your gear, and speaker placement are things I would consider first before a sub.
  5. Yup I agree. Any thoughts what a fair/reasonable offer is? $10K?
  6. I've attempted to contact the seller of these for a week with no response. If the seller is for real and his location is, not far from my home. Trying to determine a fair offer. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/d/oakland-amazing-speakers-2speakers/7448776222.html
  7. It’s not the size that my wife might have concern with.
  8. Indeed. That's the problem😁 In all seriousness a buy like that would have to be local. I'd need to see and hear them first.
  9. That's for certain, but I'm not planning on them anytime soon. That's a big investment and unlike most of my gear acquisitions this would most certainly involve the wife.
  10. And then of course Heinz has to give me his .02😉
  11. I've very happy with the LS's, and I have no need nor desire for a sub. Thanks for the advice re: the Khorn. I was asking more as a hypothetical then anything else. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on anything without being certain that I was going to like them. And like them more then what I already have.
  12. So would these corners be satisfactory with the enclosed Khorns if I decided to splurge, or should I stick with the LS's, which sound great in them?
  13. Isn't the reason they enclosed them was so they could be used in less then perfect corners? The same reason that people enclose the older versions who don't have perfect corners? So if I was considering a pair Khorns and have corners that are close to windows so less then perfect, an enclosed pair would be a reasonable solution, particularly if I had no desire to construct false corners?
  14. Tempting. Guess I wouldn't need perfect corners for these, huh?
  15. See this is where the big disconnect is between me and lots of folks on this and other forums who love subs. I have never seen either of the movies referred to here, and I never will. I stopped going to movie theaters even before the pandemic because of the ridiculously big loud systems. And many other reasons. So the type of stuff I that I listen to is reflective in the type of gear that I use and love. The La Scala's provide all the bass I would ever need. Unless I wanted to replicate the lobby scene in the Matrix of course.
  16. So here's what's available to me for now, at least to audition: REL R328 REL T 5i Klipsch RSW 15 Earthquake Supernova MKV All in good shape, only 1 of each. I'm leaning toward the T 5i but I'm open to any of them. Is there any point in getting one of each for stereo, or not unless they're the same?
  17. I spoke with Michael Crites this morning, and he was pretty clear that if the diodes are disabled on the AA, there is no reason to get them over the Type A far as any additional protection. They're a part of the protection circuit. So the Type A it is for me.
  18. I generally don't care for EQ's. I happen to have the ESW because a guy I know who used to deal in Allison speakers was emptying out his closet and basically gave it to me. What some folks have indicated about their subs in that much of the time they didn't even know if it was off or on is much the same experience I've and most others have had with this unit with Allison and AR speakers. Barely know it's there much of the time(I've had to test it myself to see if it was properly inserted in the tape loop) and then every so often I'll get a deeper rumble on a piece of music that I was familiar with but had never heard go that deep. In other words, the unit is extremely subtle, much like a good sub. And since I'm not using much power I doubt there's going to much, if any , additional exertion placed on the woofers. Got it in there now, and if notice anything out of the ordinary I'll make some comments.
  19. I should be at way less then 100 watts. I'm using 30 watt amps(benched at 40, but still...) I'm not really all that concerned about doing anything bad to the speakers. I wonder if sonically there is any difference between the A and AA crossover. I'm guessing it will be easier to hear the difference in old and new crossover simply because of the caps. We shall see.
  20. That's interesting. Maybe I will try it. With a great amount of CAUTION.
  21. So theoretically might it be safer to stick with the AA and disable the tweeter protection?
  22. Thought I'd update this thread, and specifically address this incredibly helpful, insightful quote. I went ahead and bought a pair of "A" crossovers from Crites' today. Went with the A's because I don't need tweeter protection, and disabling the AA's diodes made a very significant, positive difference in how my LS's sound. Grateful to Heinz for suggesting it. I was hoping that Michael would be able to provide oil caps in his crossover, but alas he only does Sonicaps. Obviously, after reading Heinz's experience with them above, and given that he seems to have similar listening preferences to me, I was hesitant. But as is the case with anything in this hobby, I figured ultimately I need to hear them with my own ears, in my own space with my own gear. I don't know if Heinz removed the tweeter protection on his new AA crossovers, but I'm hoping that without the protection, the outcome for me will be a little less obnoxious. And after awhile, If I don't like them, I'll just swap the old AA's back in. I don't solder, but I have a friend who does so I could conceivably have him swap in the old caps onto the A crossover, but I'm really jumping ahead of myself here. As always, all comments/thoughts/critiques welcome and appreciated.
