  1. Some entertaining reading: https://cheaptubeaudio.blogspot.com/2015/03/overview-klipsch-classics-part-i-la.html
  2. Not sure which one you're referring to, but it will be without red wine. Gave that up years ago.
  3. Sounding damn good to my ears this morning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmIXFx9hk-E
  4. I will probably give them a try if the opportunity presents itself. Not being able to properly seal combined with the additional hassle of moving them in, and then possibly out again has talked me down from the mountain of enthusiasm a bit, but I know that if the call comes in that they're ready to try out I'll probably go for it.
  5. You are right. And yes, the LS's are really perfectly mated for my needs in this room, and they sound fabulous. Way better then I imagined. As much as the corners work well for the LS's, and did for my CW's, they unfortunately aren't quite right if I ever have the chance of getting some Khorns(which might be happening soon). Windows. Would have to either enclose them (if they're not already) or devise fake corners. The former is a hassle, the latter is not an option. And while the room is just about a decent size for LS', it's probably a bit small for Khorns.
  6. Here's my not so big room with a pair of '77 LS's in them. More or less the same footprint as the Cornwall's.
  7. Have had my '77 stock LS's now for a few weeks. They replaced my same year stock CW's in my main system, and they are now in a smaller room second system. The LS's are tucked into corners which evidently won't work with Khorn's because they are too close to windows. They are driven by a McIntosh MC240 amp and C11 preamp, and I hear very little bass difference between them and the CW's, especially when the volume is up some. Very little. Have absolutely no need for more, and no need/desire for a sub. And the mids are so much better on the LS's. Incredible. Magical. I also disabled the tweeter protection diodes on the AA crossover and that has resulted in a complete disappearance of any distortion. Every owner of this period LS's with AA crossover should try it. It's the only mod I plan on doing, and it's been a substantial positive. So my takeaways are with LS's...place carefully, use high quality amplification, and if applicable, disable that tweeter protection on the AA crossovers. Then sit back and enjoy a marvelous speaker.
  8. Let's get back for a moment to the prospect of Khorns in my room. I should know more this week if they're available, and what model they are. But after researching other threads and taking into account what has been said in this thread, it becomes clear that the Khorns will require sealing of some sort to adequately perform in my room. Assuming that I won't be sealing with plywood(too much hassle for me) would the pipe foam suggestions that I've read about work ok? That seems easy enough to attempt. Would this provide the fix for putting these in my corners near the windows? Or in the end, given that I really, really like my La Scala's, and also own Cornwall's is there any reason to even try the Khorns in my room, or is the general feeling that my room seems too small with corners that aren't proper to do them any kind of justice? If that's the consensus, then I'll tell my friend let's not bother with the exercise of trying to make these work and be very satisfied with what I already am lucky enough to own.
  9. I think at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference, influenced by room size, placement and type of amplification. I have heard plenty of bass heavy speakers, and still own a nice pair of Cornwall's. But I favor the '77, stock LS's in my main system. Nothing provides me with a more magical reality. My room is medium sized at best, the LS's tucked into corners, with a McIntosh MC240 amp and C11 preamp driving them. For my ears, I get all the bass I could ever want, especially when I turn up the volume some. But it doesn't take much. Listening to several types of music over the course of the day, from symphonic, to avant garde jazz, lots of piano and cello and acoustic bass, I can feel the low notes. I can afford good subs, but I simply have no need for them. I have nothing against them, or those that use or prescribe them. But I would suggest that somebody live with LS's for a bit in their own space with their own gear before making a decision to add them, or a reason for not buying LS's. My .02.
  10. The only "mods" I did to my highly enjoyable '77's was to disable the tweeter protection diodes which helps eliminate distortion and provided a pretty dramatic positive change, and, removed the magnetic screw that's part of the 245 uH air core inductor in the left back of the crossover that is part of the tweeter circuit. Per Bob Crites "for some reason, at the factory, they sometimes used a regular steel screw in these inductors. Should be a non-magnetic screw or the inductance will not be the specified 245 uH but instead will be around 350 uH. You can check the screw with a magnet. If it is attracted to a magnet, it is wrong and should be replaced." Thanks to @KT88 for alerting me to both of these useful tips. Other then that, had no need to do anything else. I've owned/listened to a lot of speakers over the last 50+ years and the LS's are right up there with the best of them. Driving mine with a McIntosh MC240 and I can listen all day long.
  11. IMO of all the carts you listed, the 97xE was the weakest. The V15IV was a MUCH better cart, as pretty much all of the other V15 line. The 91, 95, also 75 and yes the 44/55, among others, are all outstanding Shure cartridges that can found reasonably easy, and sometimes for not that much. Original styli are gone, but as I indicated above excellent, albeit expensive, aftermarket's from Japan are available, and decent one's from Switzerland for much less also.
  12. FWIW, the AL crossover is evidently problematic so changing might not be a bad idea. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/179965-crossovers-al-versus-the-others/
  13. Jico aftermarket is expensive, although probably as close as you'll get to the original sound. But the Pfanstiehl Swiss aren't terrible and can be had for less then $30. Certainly a reasonable substitute if you're looking for one and don't want to spend on the pricier options.
  14. Thanks! Beautiful, all of them! Love the MC275. I have a MC240 driving mine now. Also have MC30's which are being refreshed but plan to install them as the main amps driving either the LS's or the Khorns, if those become a reality. The 240 will go to the second system driving either the present Cornwall's, or the LS's if I get Khorns. Is that a C22 pre? I had one and loved it, foolishly sold it. Did get a C11 which is electrically basically the same and that will not be leaving.
  15. Would love to see a picture of your room/listening set up.
  16. So to be clear, I'm not even sure any KH's are arriving. Yesterday I was contacted by my friend, who told me that he MIGHT be coming into a pair, and would I have any interest if so? I told him I was interested. He knows my place very well and he thinks that the room would work for them. I won't know until next week if they'll become a reality, and at that point I'll be able to provide more details as to which model, year, etc. BTW, I rechecked the magnetic screw issue in the LS's, and lo and behold, they are both magnetic. I have removed them both and I will be replacing with non magnetic. Can't say the difference is as dramatic as removing the diode protection, but it was easy enough to do so why not? In perusing various threads last night I even found one where Bob Crites' found a similar screw in a picture of a members AA crossover and told him to check for it being magnetic and if so to remove/replace it. It was, and he did. So thanks again!
  17. Cool John! Congrats on the LS's. If they have the same tweeter protection as the AA discussed above and particularly if you're finding any harshness out of the tweeter, give the little disconnect mod a shot. I bet you'll be really surprised.
