  1.

simple stereo receiver will not work the way I'm thinking.

Yeah, I am running an analog 2 channel pre and an old Yamaha 2-channel amp.  Does not get much simpler than that.  Have another Yamaha on stand-by if I decide to try this config.  It would require me to pick up a pair of KLF-20's however.  There is a pair in Olathe I have my eye on...

Just got my Crites titanium diaphragms in the mail today for the 30's.

Men, I just don't know what to do???

I think your best bet is to get a good set of La Scalla's  with a couple good subs and......oh wait, nevermind!

  2. Jim,

I have a KV-1 you can borrow to see if it works for you. Specs don't show it going to 50 hz but I have used it as stand alone and it was respectable. I also have a KSC C1 that is about the same size and specs claim it gets a little closer to 50 hz. I'm in St.L so if you want to try either or both let me know.

  3. Like most hobbies there is a vocal minority that take things to extremes and give everyone a bad name. There are stereo snobs, coffee snobs, scotch, cigars, cars, planes etc snobs out there. They always have perceived improvements that simple people like me cant hear or taste or feel....That is why there are $1000 audio cables or Kopi Luwak coffee etc. I am not into hi-fi, I consider myself a mid-fi guy. Like coffee, scotch and other items, when it comes to audio: the very top end stuff is wasted on me, but I know the bad stuff right away. If it makes me happy.... I'm going to drink my Quick Trip coffee listening to my Belle's (with cheap cables) and be happy as a clam.

  4. Derrick, if these subs don't do the trick for you, the only thing left will be a hearing test. I trust you have checked your homeowner's insurance for foundation repair. Good to see your photo and find out you don't look like your avatar, which quite frankly, creeps me out! Good luck with your project, sounds like you're having fun.

  5. Finally a topic everyone agrees on! Great thread, great tribute. I was able to crank several tunes before I called it a day last night and it was phenomenal. Great talent lost too soon.

  6. Great thread. Love to see someone living out their dream. Enjoy the journey. I also am fascinated with your passion for Boogie Woogie and it's ties to that area and the influences it has had on so many musical styles and artists. I think that is what will make your "museum' interesting for many. jimjimbo recommended a Marshall Tucker song for the "one song" suggestions for the Hope gathering.(Everyday I have the Blues). They introduce the song as a little "watermelon boogie woogie music". Just finished listening to it for the first time in several years! The influence is definitely there, just more with a guitar than piano. Still the best part is you are doing what you love, best of luck, but it doesn't sound like you will need luck.

  7. I saw where you bought that amp. I have one and it performs very well for me. Don't push it into low ohm loads, it doesn't like that. I don't know how the University design that morey james suggested would work out with being scaled down, I've heard they are great as designed. That would be a question beyond my scope. I am sure someone will be along to help. Good luck, it sounds like a fun project. I'm currently building a couple taped horn subs myself and having a blast (so far).

  8. If you plan to use either/or in factory condition, modest up grades allowed, you would be very hard pressed to tell the difference between the two. They are basically the same design concept with the same driver, one just made to look pretty. Both have excellent quick hard hitting bass. They don't go as low as some want but the lowest octave can be achieved with a sub. Which type of sub to use will be another debate. For the vast majority of music, you will have all the bass you need. HT may require that sub.

  9. Great story, however, make sure she knows one of the cardinal rules....no plants, flowerpots or drinks on the speakers.  It is continually amazing to me how many speakers have water stains....

I thought they came from the factory with those "decorative" rings!??!! I guess it may be the price range I look for, but rarely see any without them.

  10. Mookie, SRV is probably next after Keen... then again, things are subject to instantaneous revision!

I've been into both Vaughans for as long as I can remember.  I have the originals of Stevie's first four on vinyl, plus rebought them all on CD, plus have Texas Flood on SACD, plus just bought the new collection Texas Hurricane on vinyl (33 not 45) which has his four studio albums, plus The Sky Is Crying and Family Style, all on 200 gram virgin vinyl masters from the original tapes, plus several concerts on DVD and BluRay.  Ya might say I'm a fan.  Of all of them, I think his last album, In Step, is my favorite. After he got cleaned up his playing was even better.  The last song on that album, Riviera Paradise, is my favorite instrumental, but I like them all.  Saw him in concert about two months before the plane crash at the Gorge on the Columbia River.  He was opening for Robert Cray and totally blew him off the stage... it was nothing short of fantastic!

I'm a big Jimmie Vaughan fan too... the T-Birds have never been as good since his departure.  He recently put out two albums that I highly recommend, Jimmie Vaughan Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites and Plays More Blues, Ballads & Favorites.  Easy to get on CD, tough to find on vinyl (or should I just say expensive to find, but worth it IMHO).  Also just bought a Jimmie Vaughan signature stratocaster... now if I can just learn how to play the damn thing... it is beautiful however.  BluesBoy's son Dylan can really make that puppy sing!

Speakers will be delivered Monday, so I sense my ears are going to be very very happy next week!

Okay, since you've hijacked my thread :D , I'll jump in here and say I'm a longtime SRV and Jimmy fan.  I just got home from my travel and put in the Texas Flood SACD.  Back in college, I had a band called the Blues Express and we played a lot of SRV, Arc Angels and Storyville.  I was also at the Alpine Valley show that fateful weekend.  And the reason I couldn't pickup the Belles from Tasdom, the weekend I agreed to buy them is because I still play the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival every year and it was two weekends ago.  I typically always play at least one SRV song, sometimes on mandolin, but this year, I played the Fabulous Thunderbirds cover of Wrap it Up.  I'm also a big fan of Doyle Bramhall senior, who wrote a bunch of SRVs best tunes.

Here's a clip of me playing some SRV at the festival…  I've long stopped trying to play with his tone and prefer a little cleaner sound.

I still can't seem to get this video to embed.

Just watched (listened to) your performance. Very nice. Wish I had just a little bit of musical talent like that!

  11. Wipster, good choices on the first listen material. you will probably change that list several times before they arrive. I went with one of my favorites Stevie Ray Vaughn (greatest hits playlist)when I got my Belles home. Cranked it and loved it. After my initial phase of how loud can I listen, I settled down and played some softer songs and appreciated the speakers even more. Really brought to life certain aspects of the recordings that I was missing. As much as I enjoyed Crossfire by SRV, I have probably cued up "Lenny" by him more often. Enjoy, it's fun, and expensive, but most hobbies are?

  12. Don't you hate it when the wife forces you to upgrade your system!?!?

I have only heard the 7's a couple of times and the Chorus I have not heard in years, but I am sure the 7's will help lessen your withdrawls from the Chorus. Great looking system that I would guess sounds as good as it looks.

  13. You cant go wrong with the ALK Universals. I have never tried them but have not heard a bad thing about them plus used by many people that know their sh*t. But since you already have the CT125s, the 4500 xover wont break the bank. Lowering the xover point is also putting less strain on your mid (in theory) I know mine sound great (in my mind)! You actually have more stuff than I do, AND much nicer stuff. Good luck with whatever direction you go. I will have to search out your first song choices as I am not familiar with them.

  14. MKP, congrats on one year! You're about 6 months ahead of me. The posts of yours that I have seen are always kind and informative. (I haven't read them all, that would be creepy) You stayed away from the mud slinging posts which are always tempting to join in. You obviously have made some friends here. I cringed a couple times when you posted "personal" stuff, but all I saw were genuinely concerned replies. A sure sign you have made friends. You also tend to have common sense opinions on a variety of subjects, The objective of most group meetings of addicts is to reform you. This place only adds fuel to the fire.

Hope you keep posting for years to come.

  15. AB's had to go, you are right. 4500 plus the tweets was only $15 more when I did it. I let Bob make the call, he said he liked the 4500 better but only by a little bit (plus it is his design). Either way, I am sure they sound similar and much better than the dreaded AB. Those will look nice in your room. I am sure they will work out well for you. I have bought from Phil before and he is straight up (pricey, but stands behind what he sells).
Waiting for them will be the hardest part.

  16. Just for shiites and sunnis, here's the Belles I just bought (you might have seen them on eBay):

Judging by your Seahawk cap, your Belle's have a long ride from Maumelle AR! Curious to hear your comments on the AB2 from Bob. I chose the 4500 hz crossover with the CT 125 tweeter to update my Belles and loved it. The cost for the two xovers plus tweeter was about the same as the new AB2 so I went that direction since I got new tweeters with that mix. I trust you will like your Belles as much as I do mine.
