  1. What does it do? I've seen some equalizers that had a DBx button on them. It had a nice effect of giving the sound a wider sound stage.
  2. That device looks pretty cool. Right now I am mostly vinyl and have a teac CD player using its DAC. It does have a provision of sending a signal out the back of the CD unit to a different DAC though.
  3. That is nice Jim, but this is about the people that do have extra things or toys, you do not which is fine but not on topic.
  4. By toy I mean add ons like equalizers, preamps, gizmos that you don't really need but you added on to enhance the sound somehow. I've played around with some of them and will have to say it would be a carver holographic sound processor. With certain music its a WOW that does sound good. I don't use it all the time but its an item I don't think I would sell, its there just in case.
  5. I have not really compared Large Speakers like the Chorus to smaller ones in a smaller room. I in my basement area which is not huge, 20 feet wide 16" deep the larger speakers seem fine and do sound more live like. At lower volumes the do ok too. Is there a situation where Larger Drivers big speakers are actually much worse than say a bookshelf? I mean aside from being harder to move and place, that aside I would think it would have to be a pretty small room for bookshelfs to sound better. I do have near field monitors from Kef and Swan but I don't think they sound as good as the big speakers.
  6. Lol, I saw that ad but did not notice it was just for Grills. Typical Ebay scumbag. I think on a episode of Juge Judy they had a ebay lady that sold a picture of two iphones for 500.00. What they got in mail was a photo of two iphones. The ebay scumbag lady tried to say if they are that stupid they deserve to loose the money. Judge Judy tore her a new one. I think its on you tube, was pretty funny. This guy is the same type of scumbag, moldy speaker grills for 500.00 + shipping. Probably got them out of the dumpster to support his heroine addiction.
  7. You guys are trying to get me addicted to audio. Get new speakers then just get just a little more from them search for new amps etc...
  8. Like this Carver? http://wardsweb.org/audio/tfm35.htm I have not looked into whats out there for amplifiers. Outlaw sells 200 watt mono blocks that can be hooked to anything. Or and old Carver? Carvers can be had for pretty cheap, are they decent?
  9. I have ALWAYS known that not everybody hears the same! Remember going into places like Woolworths and others with my mom as a kid that sold televisions or cheaper entertainment centers and the sound would drive me NUTS! I am not talking about physically listening to something in the store, the sound would get to me anywhere in the store, and the closest I can come to in a description is that it sounded like grains of sand continuously hitting your ear drums! I learned very early on that just about nobody else could hear this Roger This is very true, what sounds good to one person is terrible to another, usually in the higher frequencies. I've had my hearing tested a few times and I have a reduction in the hmm I think the 9k range, was from an power box by a sidewalk overheated while I was walking next it it and it exploded like tnt. Ears rang for a long time. So things in that range could be bumped up for me and sound fine while for you it would sound overbearing.
  10. Port tubes are confusing. The chorus is a bass reflex speaker with twin 4 inch port holes on the bottom front of the speaker. The port holes are only the thickness of the wood. I think if you do the math that sized hole with push out additional bass sound at like 66hz or something like that. The longer the port tube the lower the frequency of the sound that comes from the ports. 7" is around 38hz. The main drive plays down to 45hz or so. So you get a 38hz +- 4hz or so bump combined with main drivers output. There is no free lunch though, there are downsides to making port tubes too long. I think anywhere from 2" to 7" is the safe range on this particular speaker/box. Some people have said (I don't know where they get this information from) that Klipsch made the port tubes too short on purpose. I called a speaker company and gave them the thiel specs on the woofer and box size and he calculated that 3" or just covering one port hole would be about right. In another post a fellow with my speakers used 7" tubes and played four low bass notes before and after. Before port tube - Notes A and B =, Note C was very low, Note D could not be heard at all After 7" port tubes - Note C was the same as A and B and note D could be heard but was lower than AB or C. So they do work. I took poster paper (its just thick construction paper) and cut it to 7" and rolled it to the right size and while it was in the port I expanded the roll so it was tight. Then I just taped the edges so it would stay in the tube shape. It works fine and looks fine (red ports red paper) I can get regular plastic port tubes but they will sound about the same.

  12. Yes I can tell the chorus can handle more power than what I have. In general 100 watts is plenty for most speakers I have but most of them are smaller speakers where you don't get much more output with power. I can tell the chorus can eat more power if I had it. And these things will get loud and clear, they are a good combination of clarity and loudness. I have smaller monitors Kefs that are very accurate smooth but they do not have that visceral sound when played louder, the output sort of hits a wall on them. But those are only 88DB efficiency. They guy that sold them to me had them on a 300+ watt output old Carver amp. They did get louder but his amp had some serious hum issues so the outlaw with less power easily bested that amp.
  13. No I expected the Chorus speakers to blow away the KG4s. But initially when we played them we did not get a WOW these 90 pound speakers blow away the much smaller and easier to carry KG4s. So I was disappointed to the point of thinking i'm going to sell these things. To me if they are going to be a pain in the rear to move and back breakers they better perform. I am guessing the old midrange or tweeters might have been in bad shape. With the new tweeters and midrange along with port tuning gave them a much better sound. So If you get an old set of speakers you never know if they are performing as good as when they were new. This upgrade on the chorus made more of a difference than it did on my KG4s now they sound more like a $4,000 speaker.
  14. 256mp3 VBR are decent quality I can believe many would not be able to hear any difference. We keep the original Flacs as the source as hard drive space today is cheap. And can always down-sample to what ever bit rate for say a phone etc. Depending on the type of music I would say 192mp3 and higher is the point where you have to really struggle to hear a big difference vs the flac source. The main difference between say CDs and vinyl we have is the the way the company decided to use compression on the CD version of the track. If CD is the source, the song usually (not always) has its dynamic range compressed for more loudness than the vinyl version. We did A/B or Mahavishnu Orchestra (Vinyl vs CD) and was hard pressed to hear much of a difference, but on some newer CDs you can tell they played around with the dynamic range (because they can on CD) and the CD will sound much louder with less dynamic range vs vinyl. In my opinion you want the source as close to the original as possible. Also, just because its a Flac does not mean its good. you can make a flac from a 96mp3 it will be no better than the original 96mp3.
  15. Ok, finally got some new speaker wire so I could A/B the KG4 vs The Chorus. I put new Titanium tweets in the Chorus + new midrange from Crites. But kept the crossovers stock for now. Also put 7" paper ports in for a little deeper bass. A/B using a NIN song with some heavy bass tracks. The Chorus have more midrange pop, louder fuller etc. The KGs did not get toasted they sound great too just not as full or loud. The KGS still have a slight edge in imaging but overall the Chorus are just bigger, tighter when played loud etc. So now the Chorus beat the KG4s by a good margin, especially playing it loud. I'll do the crites cross overs and call it good. I Probably can keep these things for a long time, they do sound nice.
  16. I added 7" paper ports, moved them a little closer together and did crank them. They sounded much better, very enveloping and loud. I have crites titanium tweets and mid-range on the way. I'll report back when I get them installed.
  17. I have a Sansui AU 717 amp made (1977-1979). I took it into to have it checked out and the guy tested it and said its clean, does not need a recap. I guess some age better than others so maybe that old Pioneer is fine too. I've read about people getting a recap and finding its about the same as the old one. So if its not broken don't fix it.
  18. I read suggestions on this forum to get more bass from Chorus 1s is to use 7" port tubes. So I made four 7" tubes out of thick poster paper. Yes I went for fire Red Anyhow it did give the bass more Snap and if I put my hand by the ports I can now feel air pumping out where as with the holes I really did not feel much air. I did not even seal them, they are just in via friction fit. I rolled them up put them in the holes let them expand so they were tight then just taped the edges so it would not unroll. Just wondering what the relationship is between bass and port tube length and or diameter. Obviously the short (thickness of the wood 3/4") holes had less bass. But what would a tube 4" do vs 7" or 3" diameter vs 4" diameter? I used a calculator for 38hz and it was around 7" using 5 cubic feet for the chorus size. The Chorus has a K48 woofer that looks like it can go to 30hz. So why not use 30hz as the frequency? I think that gives around 9" tubes. Can anyone clarify the pros and cons of going to long for the port tube?
  19. Maybe you have a grounding loop issue. Could try this to see if it works. http://www.amazon.com/BOSS-Audio-B25N-Ground-Isolator/dp/B000LP4RMG?tag=ecoustics
  20. Don't get me wrong they do sound good, I have not looked at each speakers connections but I can hear sound from all 6 drivers. The KG4s just seemed to image a little better and had better bass/midrange punch. The Chorus are louder but the bass seems a bit thin. I'm going to port them, new tweets etc. I did not A/B yet so they might sound better than the KG4s overall just with all that extra weight and size I wanted them to dominate them. I thought it was me but my son was not saying much and we were both thinking the same thing. They don't sound much better than the smaller easier to move/transport KG4s so why go big. I will get them tuned up and let you know how they fare.
  21. The Chorus I does not have a rear driver or port. It has two round holes/ports on the front below the woofer. They do not have tubes or any sound dampening material on the inside.
  22. What amp are you using? Right now using a new Outlaw Retro 2 channel. Its like 130 watts per channel. Same one that I'm using on the KG4s. Its decent has good power.
  23. Yea those CF4s must be impressive. They don't look very large. I want to tune up these Chorus, I think the left tweeter is a bit distorted so a set of new tweets should help. The only thing that sort of made me hestitate on the chorus was the size. OMG they were heavy to lug downstairs. I was thinking these better crush the smaller speakers by as much as they were crushing my back. How does one know if all 3 drivers are close to what they should be? I thought if they were somewhat abused the tweeters would be the first to blow out. The woofers cosmetically look perfect. Since my pair does not have any tubes in the holes I might just make two tubes from construction paper and stuff them in and give it a listen.
  24. I've had KG4s for a few years. Did the crites xover/tweeter to them but really did not think it changed them all that much over stock, maybe a little but nothing earth shattering. I just picked up some Chorus 1s, it was local so I did not have to deal with shipping. They sound pretty good, maybe a bit bigger than the KG4s but I would not say they crush the KG4s. Anyone here update their Chorus 1s? Did it make much difference in sound?
