  1. When I bought my Khorns from their original owner, he included a set of interesting documents...  I thought I'd post them here one at a time as I get around to photographing them.  I apologize if they do not belong here, but I think they will have some interest to some people.

    Who did you march with?

No one notable, mostly h.s. and college.  I did have the privilege to study under Bret Kuhn, though.  You might know of him, he was in the Cavaliers then taught for the Bluecoats.  I just don't have the chops anymore.  I have a pair of sticks at work (Bret Kuhn signature sticks, too!), and the armrest of one of my office chairs has decent bounce action and isn't loud at all, so when I'm thinking about a problem or when the mood just hits me, I try to keep up my hands as much as possible.

Carolina Crown is awesome, well, they're all good.  I catch DCI championships when they're on and I love it.

Here's my submission for awesome drummer:

  3. Just getting around to this post...

I played in drum corps for 4 years, and I agree that he looks self-taught.  I saw the comment about "25 rudiments", I always thought there were 26, though I probably can't name them anymore.  That was 30 years ago.  !!!(hard for me to believe)!!!

  4. Sorry, brother.  I lost my Dad in 2011 and still think about him almost every day.  He taught me a lot.  He was a Navy man, WWII and the Korean conflict, saw action in the Pacific.  Came home, married, became a machinist, and raised 5 children.  Died at age 83 and was still mentally all there even though he was nearly blind and couldn't walk well.  Died in the home he built with his own two hands.  Not too shabby.

I know your loss, and you will get through this and be a stronger person on the other side.

I don't know you, but if you need to talk, hit me up.  I'm praying for you.

  5. Earlier today I modified my Type A Khorn crossovers to support the 4500Hz CT-120 crossover point.  I did it in such a way that I could nearly instantly A/B original/4500Hz by using a DPDT switch to introduce an additional 2uF capacitance in parallel with the 2uF tweeter cap and also a 500uH inductor into the squawker path.  Note that you CANNOT perform this test while using the stock K77; as others have pointed out, it cannot handle the additional power supplied to it by the increased bandwidth.

My listening choices were three very familiar tracks (to me, anyway)

Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. - Track 1 : First Regret / 3 Years Older

    Nidarosdomens jentekor & TrondheimSolistene - MAGNIFICAT - Track 4 : Et misericordia

Nidarosdomens jentekor & TrondheimSolistene - MAGNIFICAT - Track 5: Fecit potentiam

I can definitely hear a difference in the midrange when I A/B the mods.  Quite a lot of the harshness in the midrange is greatly reduced.  This is most apparent to me in the female vocals on Track 5 of MAGNIFICAT.

I liked it so much that I listened to a few hours of Steely Dan, Ozric Tentacles, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Animals as Leaders... after which I stopped the A/B and made the mods more permanent.

For those interested in the diagram, I can provide it as a PM on request.

I am looking for a 'Dope from Hope' paper that explains the center channel but alas all the 'Dope from Hope' stuff is gone or dang hard to find. I'm going to ask about this in another thread.

Dope From Hope  <- look here.  The articles you want are volume 14 no. 4, volume 15 no 2, and volume 15 no 6.  There may be others, I didn't look.

    I am near Wentzville.

Currently without an audio system of any kind.

    It's complicated.

Signal processing engineer. I am required to write a lot of firmware and software, but am by no means an expert.

We probably know a lot of people in common.

Yep, definitely not an expert here.  I learn something new every day.

Welcome!  What's an "embedded" software engineer, and what kind of stuff do you do?

Thanks for the welcome.  I design hardware and software for things containing microcontrollers.  Sometimes they have no user interface.  Things like GPS/rubidium time references, spectrum analyzers, satellite locating & tracking systems, aircraft instrumentation, remote metering, microwave data links, solar chargers, wild game calls, cable boxes, etc...

The joke used to be that people would ask me what I do and I would tell them, "You know when you can't set your time on your VCR?  That's my fault".

  9. Hello,

I got the Khorn bug around 1987 when a friend got a pair from Flip's in St. Louis.  Finances and space didn't allow me to purchase my own.  Fast forward almost 30 years and I now own a pair, 1968 models.  They are fantastic.  I still don't have the proper room for them, but I'm getting there.

I'm an embedded software engineer by trade, and no stranger to electronics in general.  Anyone else in St. Louis?
