  1. I’ve been considering options to ”hang a Heresy”, for a Center Channel. Specifically an HII. I’m glad I found this thread, as one of my ideas was to use eyebolts through the back. Good to know that it is a bad idea to do it that way. The reason for eyebolts is that the location is in front of a window, and as such, hanging it on the wall wouldn’t be possible. I was thinking of using eyebolts and cables, or chain and hanging it from the rafter. Now I’m thinking that eyebolts, through the side or top might work? I’d normally be completely against defacing a Heritage speaker this way. However, this is a single speaker, of indeterminate age & finish, probably WO (tag is missing), it was coated with a film of tobacco smoke it looked rough & smelled worse, when I bought it. It looks & smells fine now but hardly a pristine example.

At the moment it’s on the entertainment center on its side, with the TV sitting on top of it. This makes theTV just too high. If anyone has thoughts on hanging, or other options feel free to chime in.

Can you please tell me what keyhole mounts you bought?

The “keyhole” mounts in the back of the speaker. I just used a wall anchor rated for 60#, you fit the head of the bolt into the “keyhole”. Mine have been have been up this way for well over a year now, with no problems. Just make sure you use an appropriate wall anchor, and install it properly.

  3. I’m calling it finished. I can’t say that I’m ecstatic about the results, but it’s not that obvious. The big take away is that the difference between $25.00/can guitar lacquer, and $7.00/can Rustoleum lacquer is, huge. But it does dress it up a little, and if I get sick of looking at it there’s always a grill to cover up the horn, which was sort of the original plan anyway.

  4. Nice! The BFM designs are impressive. I’ve built two, a T18, and just (mostly) finished a TT. The TT worried me at first, as it took a little tweaking to my system and maybe a little break-in time to get it to sound right. But once I got it to play nice with my La Scalas, I can’t imagine ever going back. Good luck on the finishing. You are fortunate to still have the option to finish it to suit your room, and system.

    Woooow!! Gorgeous car!

Thank ya. It was a great car. Due to some issues with my wife’s car I had to trade it to get her a new one.  Chevy really had a good thing with the Gen6 Camaros. At least through 2018. Then they RUINED them. Oh well, it was a fun toy while I had it.

  6. I continue to be impressed by the TT. It just fills the room with bass, all while sounding like it comes from the La Scalas, just a perfect match. I’m not going to re-run YPAO just yet, as @jason str suggests there may be more break-in period of the driver. Plus it sounds really good right now, and I don’t want to screw it up. For now I’ve got the finish about where it should be,  just let it darken over time. I do have an idea to add a little flair to the horn, as it is a bit more visible in this location than it would have been if it had worked as a table. That will probably have wait,  as I don’t have enough materials on hand to complete it.
Again, if you are thinking of building one of the BFM designs; do it. You will not be disappointed.

Got the first coat of stain on the entire cab, the hatch door is the last thing left to do.  Testing should be soon.

Looks good. You are in the home stretch. When do you expect to finish up and bring the thunder?

What would have been cool is to build some legs and faux doors and handles like your cabinet next to the sliding glass doors.

You would almost have a matched pair.

That “cabinet” is actually an old Zenith console radio/turntable. I need to either get rid of it, or repurpose it. It has a mono tube amp in it, that’s why I’ve kept it around. I was storing it for my mother in law, she said trash it. I couldn’t do it. So for now it’s just in the way.

These drivers take up to a month to fully break in so don't go too far with adjustments, it will change for the better.

I wondered if that might be the case. The T18 didn’t seem to change much, but I moved it around quite a bit at first. I think I just attributed improvements to placement more than break in period.

I'm not 100% sure on weight, but I believe I used around 2.5 sheets of 1/2" birch ply, so in the neighborhood of 100lb without the driver (according to a quick Google search on birch weight)  just got the braces installed and 3/4th of the cabinet stained.  I went with natural danish for the mouth braces, to give some contrast to the rest of the...

Looks really good. Not quite as heavy as I’d expected, but still not something you wanna move too often. Waiting to see how things shake out. Good luck with the next stages.

  11. Took a bit of time today, measured, tested, and tweaked a little. I must say it does go low & loud. 27hz @ 97db or so, before way too much crap in the room started to vibrate & rattle. To be honest, I almost got a little queasy as I was moving around the room, repositioning the sub. I have no idea as to the validity & accuracy of these numbers, I am just using an iPhone meter & iPad tone generator, so FWIW.
Full disclosure, I was a bit disappointed at first. Like I said in an earlier comment it really sounded like the T18. Considering the size difference, I’d expected a bit more. One thing, I had the crossover set at 60hz, then raised it to 80hz, that alone was, transformational. Wow!  Paul Simon’s “Graceland”, was now seriously rocking! It was like the La Scalas suddenly became became twice as large. Crazy!
I rarely watch movies on that system as the TV is a bit small for the room. But now the audio at least will be more impressive.
Zero disappointment with this project. It has proven to be a big distraction with the current “viral” state of affairs. Such a different world now, from when I began gathering parts back in February.
Probably not too much more for me to add to the thread, I will if anything interesting comes up. I’ll do my best to answer any questions that anyone might have. I encourage anyone who’s considering building a BFM design, do it. Buy the plans, read the plans, and just do it. Thanks again for the comments, ideas, and positive feedback.

Everyone stay safe, be well, and be careful out there.

Thanks for your impressions M_Klipsch, shame that the TT is to big to really be used as a table.
I am thinking that maybe a double T18 has more table like dimensions, even if the placement in the room is not reccomended.

Yeah I was hoping it would work as well. Oh well that’s how it goes sometimes. The plans even suggest building a cardboard mock up, to check for “fit”. Obviously I skipped this step. The T18 could work as an end table, probably too small for a coffee table? The one I built was only a 12” wide single 8”, though. I forget the max width on the T18.

  13. I’ve been getting the room cleaned up and back in shape. I still have just “listened” to it, no real tweaking or measurements. I did have it cranked up a bit today with windows & door open while I was working outside. The neighbors aren’t too close, and probably not too pissed off, but I doubt that they are Springsteen fans. That’s too bad, because Mojo Nixon was the guest DJ on XM’s E Street Radio this afternoon, it was a great show. I never new Mojo Nixon was a Bruce fan.
Thanks again for everyone’s comments, and ideas, I’ve enjoyed building it. If anyone is on the fence about building one of these, I say go for it. Your wives however, may hold a different opinion.

Started with the stain, a little blotchy, but I really like the color so far!

    20200406_162822.jpg

I find Baltic Birch difficult to stain evenly, and to get the color I want. I think that’s why I often use Tung Oil, it darkens as it ages, it just takes a while. Yours is looking good.

I must say I’m glad I don’t have to move that beast into the house. Any idea how much it’ll weigh when finished?

  15. Nice looking build. I just finished a Table Tuba, that I started back in February. I almost wish I’d gone with the THTLP. Then, I see the number of braces in your project and I think, maybe not. I really like the look of the danish oil. I too, am trying to match the TT to my La Scalas which are Raw Birch finished with Tung Oil. What Driver and amp do you plan to use?

  16. There were a few delays and I haven’t updated the progress. Good news, the driver install went well. Much easier than the T18, even with the 10”. I built a decent box for the plate amp. A big delay was caused by the missing spool of speaker wire. It was located, on a shelf, in a box labeled, “speaker wire”.  I’ve had to accept that it’s just too large to be a table in the space, so it is on its edge in a corner.
I’ve only plugged it in and listened to it no measurements of any kind. I’ve just listened to music, the only adjustments made, have been on the plate amp. Initial impressions are that it sounds very similar to the T18, and just adding the bass on the La Scalas, at all volume levels. In the loud department, it certainly “keeps up” with them.

M_Klipsch, great thread and amazing build. In these days of self imposed social distancing I have followed the build with great interest and looked forward for progress.

I have the T18, Auto and TableTuba Longstyle plans, but never got around to build one, as I have been going back and forth on wich one to build.

Am very curious on how the T18 and the Table compare :)

    Keep it up

Thank you for the positive feedback. I’ve got to admit it was well timed, for certain. I’ve been on a  limited work schedule, so this has filed in the blank spaces for me as well. I’m behind in posting an up date which I’ll get to soon. Short answer; it seems to be exactly like the T18. Not overwhelming, just enhances the low end. Honestly, I was expecting more ooomph. Oh well it’ll get sorted.

Sorry, I've been meaning to ask as I follow this, what wood did you build the cabinet from?  That's not just regular plywood is it?

    @M_Klipsch

    BTW excellent job.

Thank ya. CECAA850 is correct 1/2” (12mm) Baltic Birch.

  19. I am calling it good for now. Gonna let it dry down overnight & install the driver tomorrow & figure out where it goes. Here are some pics of the finish, either the top or front. It’s beginning to get a bit of the oil “glow”. I’m disappointed with the screw holes, but I’ll leave it be for now. Crap, I just remembered I haven’t built a box for the plate amp.

A few years back, I built an entertainment center out of 1/2" MDF that I "veneered" with 1/4" oak (or birch) that you could get at Lowes or Home Depot that came in 4x8 sheets.  It made for a 3/4" piece of wood, basically.  Turned out quite good as I cut sections out to make it look like planks and then used solid oak on edges and routered a nice edge.  Those sheets were very reasonable and stained really good.

Thing is, they may not have that now at those stores as I would imagine it came from China.  I went to Lowes over the weekend to get a piece of their "cabinet grade" 1/2" birch for some garage cabinets we built and they were out of it but had some 3/4"...but not much.  Went to the local lumbar yard and they had some.

Edit...found a pic of entertainment center.

    Can't say i blame you.

If it really bothers you an alternative would be buy a 1/8" BB panel and go right over it.

Yes I’ve always thought that I could just veneer the whole damn thing and start over if it turns out poorly.
