Being a ham radio operator (wa4wab) I am more than aware of extraneous radio signals. I am a big fan of shielding any kind of cabling when practical and/or needed. I use these speaker cables with their locking banana plugs. https://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/speaker/index.htm Interconnects are another issue all together as they are before any amplification so anything, however small, will be exaggerated. Shielding is vary important here and I chose to by-passe most of this using XLR + a coax cabling. It just so happens all of my gear has these connections.

I am also a big proponent of listening to new to new owner speakers for at least a few weeks to familiarize them selves with there sound. But isn't even a “lowly” Dayton cap an upgrade from a 20-30+ year old OEM polyester cap?

How many factory binding posts are you willing to possibly damage to get a usable cap? Wouldn't it be better to just get a single OEM post assembly and swap it out with the damaged one? They are very easy to remove & replace as a unit.

You could have the speakers face one other very closely. Then swap the speaker wire polarity of one of the speakers. You should then be able to have the volume higher than you could normally tolerate.

There is way too much hype over speaker wire. This has been talked about many times before – just keep it simple and avoid CCA (copper clad aluminum) wire, make sure it is pure 100% copper. I solder all of my crimped connectors BTW, I would suggest doing so if you have the skill and means.
