Pretty hard to design a passive preamp that's noisy! No gain = no noise... pretty simple. Much of the noise you experience with an active tube or SS preamp is caused by a system mismatch. Using the wrong preamp with an amp or the reverse. One of the largest headache of putting together a separates system is picking components that play well together. I personally have never liked passive preamps but LP's is a big part of my serious listening...

    Yea, probably impedance issues.

  2. I appreciate your feedback. It's interesting what you mentioned on digital media. My listening buddy uses Roon with Qobuz and it apparently seeks out various res files. What's interesting about this though is that sometimes it will provide 24 bit files and 16 bit CD quality files and for whatever the reason, in many cases just the simple 16 bit CD files sometimes play even better than some of the higher res files. This stuff is way out of my area of expertise but I'm glad you just get the files you get and then you spend more time just listening rather than being tempted to test files all day.

For anyone out there losing sleep over my upgrade woes (I'm sure that is absolutely no one) ... sleep well tonight. I don't know if it was break-in (I let them run for two full days) or changes I made to my room treatments, but all is now good. More than good. The nasally, bullhorn-ish sound I was getting is gone, and I can second the original poster's rave review. I absolutely loved my IIIs and only upgraded because I can't resist the possibility of eking out just that little bit more from my system. This upgrade gave me much more than just a little bit more. The bass punch and finesse, and the depth and layers (it's the layers more than anything!) that I'm now hearing in the soundstage are just amazing. The Decware/Forte IV combo really might have me at the end of my search. I can't see myself wanting to upgrade either amp or speakers anytime soon, if ever.

I think we also get used to what we hear and sometimes when something new comes along, it takes time to adjust to it.

Noticed in your video that the Forte and Heresy are on on legs. How high are the legs? Having the them elevated add or detract the bass?

Raising the low end driver usually reduced bass, however, I raised the Heresy 6" and the Forte 4" to increase the height of the soundstage. As far as the bottom end frequencies, my floors generate a really nice bass resonance and as a result, the bass doesn't sound compromised. You can listen to both here with earbuds.

Yeah, with my Schiit Aegir or Vidar I've used my SYS with great results like you described. I also have one of those Nobsound passive preamps as well and it works just as well. I use the Nobsound simply because it has a nicer volume knob and it's smooth.

I've acquired the Nobsound and it's dead silent to my ears with my Dynaco ST35 and ST70 amps as well as my Schiit Vidar 2. Even when I place my ear up to my Heresy's and Forte's I can't hear any high pitch frequencies so the floor noise is dead silent  I'm posting a review on it today. BTW, the volume is smooth and solid and the build quality is first rate. The volume increases perfectly as I rotate it and so there's no impedance issues. Definitely a much nicer build than the Schiit SYS and I prefer the larger, more solid rotating knob. Wow, really amazed. Thanks, Daniel

Glad to hear you like the Nobsound. 75% of the reviews are very positive while a few had issues where most of the volume occurred near the end of the rotation of the volume. I like its sleeker design and build quality much more than the SYS and I too like the larger volume control. Thanks for sharing.

  7. I've been spending more time with the SYS to reduce coloration from my tube preamps because one of my rooms isn't completely treated as well as it should be. What's interesting though is how amazingly quiet the Schiit SYS is since it is basically nothing but a small Alps volume control with no complicated circuit.  Connected to my Heresy II and my Dynaco ST70 for example, I can place my ear to the tweeter and the floor noise is literally non existent compared to the average tube preamp.

Since the SYS has no gain, it requires a bit more volume but it's not an issue on speakers with high sensitivity. Even while playing with various amps and phono stages, I haven't had any impedance issues so far and I'm extremely impressed with the neutral clarity which allows the actually sound of the ST70 to remain as faithful as possible as the SYS doesn't introduce any coloration or sound signature other than just a volume control. It's just dead quiet.

This can easily compete with preamps costing literally thousands of dollars. I just ordered a Nobsound volume control to see how it does as well. Passive volume controls are an excellent option for amplifiers if you don;t have the money to spend on an actual preamp. So far this Schiit SYS which I've had for several years now sounds amazing regardless of cost. Doesn't matter if you spend $15,000 on a preamp. Sometimes it's hard to beat the sound of nothing.

  8. I will be posting a review on the actual latest McIntosh 275. I found the sound to be too bright, grainy and analytical for my tastes. The Kenny Russell Dynaco ST70 sounds like warm silk by comparison at a third the price. The 275 used the stock KT88 tubes while the ST70 used the EL34 NessTone's. I love McIntosh products but wasn't too thrilled with their 275. Wouldn't be surprised if the clone was pretty good.

    Hey guys!

So I bought the La Scalas, but there's something not so great about the sound and I'm trying to figure out whats happening. I'm using the PrimaLuna Prologue Premium as my integrated amp.

I've had a Cornwall that I've enjoyed for almost 4 years now. But when I compare the sound of the La Scalas the magic just seems to be missing. The vocals are not forward and magical as they used to be. The sound stage is great. But it almost feels a bit too clinical and lacks some warmth. And yes the low end of the bass also is bothering me I guess, but that was expected given the La Scalas don't go below 50Hz whereas the Cornwall goes down to 34Hz. I am struggling so badly for words when it comes to what I'm experiencing! But it's not just me, my wife also feels that the Cornwalls were better! Which is crazy so I'm trying to figure what happened.

    Here's a couple of theories I have:

Amp pairing: Could it be that I just need a much better amp? That maybe the one I have is not doing the speakers justice?

Low end: Or maybe I'm just reacting very badly to the low end being capped at 50Hz instead of 34Hz? Many of the people who recommended the La Scalas also recommended getting a sub. But looks like getting a tube amp which has a separate out for the subs is going to be quite an investment.

Also it could just be my mind playing tricks on me. I've moved the Cornwalls to another room so will be a real pain to try and do an A/B test just to see if I'm tripping or what. Maybe my expectations were too high.. Or more likely maybe I'm just going through a rough patch in my relationship to music and sound.

Please do share your wisdom, it always helps! :)

In my opinion, that amp is a bad pairing.

It is not possible to make such a recommendation.  A particular tube will likely sound different in every piece of equipment in which it is used because of differences in operating parameters.  Personally, I don’t believe in tube rolling but, if it’s important to you, you need to buy a number of different types and evaluate them yourself in your piece of equipment.

Ironic, considering your title is tube fanatic. 🤪
