  1. HHMMMM...Lets see..good sounding vinyl?? Jeff Beck- Blow by Blow Massive Attack- Mezzanine Pink Floyd- 1st UK release ONLY Big Star- #1 Record Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - 1st pressing Early Bowie ( Young Americans, Space Oddity ) Miles Davis -Kind of Blue Stanley Clarke- 1st solo LP REM- Murmur Neil Young- Comes a Time (AWESOME sounding LP) Hmm....Doesnt ALL vinyl sound good ?? Well NO, But it's better MOST of the time if its recorded pre Mid 80s ( pre DAT / Digital tape )
  2. Craig...I scratched my initials in that Scott w/ a ink thats only detected by a special laser I own..So..I'll know if ya swap it out,ya bastard !! LOL
  3. Hey Mike..that's great !! I have moved my Cornwalls to the basement which is MUCH bigger and they sound great..So, I'm keepin them and now..thanks to your "push over the edge"- I'm re-ordering the ALKs for them !! Driving them w/ an Eico ST-70 ,which sounds good ,but my Scott 299 was better and now Craig has re-tubed and recapped it and says its WONDERFUL sounding. And the phono section in the 299 was great!! Cant wait to get it back !!
  4. I'm w/ Mike on this..I went and listened to the RF-7s and felt the Chorus 1s were MUCH better..I also have cornwalls (which I was selling- now keeping- and now getting ALKs..thanks Mike !!)which may be a better choice..BUT...Maybe you prefer the newer stuff??
  5. I just showed Val this thread and her comment was.."well..what did they (Columbia) want?? I mean we spent a YEAR talkin' about makin a record and 2 weeks maybe cutting it !!".... We cut ALL the tracks- INCLUDING VOCALS- at the rate of a song per day !!..We spent 2 days getting drum sounds and keeper tracks and then went in and did all the guitars, bass,keys,etc..and then later that evening (after she heard the song a million times) Val had to go out there and sing "keeper vocals". She didnt feel she even bettered our demos !!...So ya learn..record your demos, boys and girls, like its your RECORD - cause often the actual record is only about "chasin the demo's magic" (as they say)....interesting..very interesting
  6. YA KNOW...I agree w/ all the above but I'm so sick of talkin about how I think we shouldve done it and how others think we shouldve done it..I just wanna move on and do the NEW stuff the right way- OUR WAY!! We're also both into stuff like Morcheeba and Massive Attack so we'll add something from that influence as well and just do a newer "better" record..dig?? I mean....we cut 6 (SIX !!!) entirely different arrangements of "Baby Hold On" trying to make them happy!! . One alittle more like IVY or something. Another slower..another in a lower key, etc....Its a good record and I can be proud of it but its not the record I WANTED to make !! STILL ..THAT SAID..I've got 10,000 cds in my friggin' garage so who wants a cheap copy !!???
  7. The short story........... Val was at a club watching a band here in Nashville. Some guy walked up and started asking her opinion of the band they were watching. As they talked, people kept on coming up and saying "Hey, your that girl from Porcelain (our ORIGINAL name)- Man..I saw you guys open for The Pretenders last nite !! Great Show, etc..etc". After this happened SEVERAL times- the guy asked Val about her band- and handed him her card. HHmmm..Vice President of Columbia Records...Val had a Porcelain cd in his hands by morning. I warned Val he may NEVER listen to it. Well, after a couple days we got calls from several people at Columbia (NY) and said they loved the stuff. Remember now, this is PORCELAIN- not Sparkledrive. Well..after a few months- they signed us to Columbia. They had us change our name and proceeded to A&R a much "poppier" record than we would have. Several trax that were live favorites ( like our closer!!)were cut because they were "too rock-y". Val normally wore tight leathers live but they brought DRESSES to the photo shoot..Stuff like that was constant. We had our KNOWLEDGE of who we were- they had an image and sound they were after. Porcelain - as we were signed- we a much edgier band w/ roots is Indie Pop but not as polished as the SparkleDrive record. For instance- the opening track- "Baby Hold On"- has all these really great Feedback guitars and fuzz bass BUT Chris Lord Alge was told we wanted "pop" mixes SO...out went the feedback and fuzztones and turn up those vocals!! So..although I'm glad so many people love the record- I STILL hear other people's influence all over it and it bums me out everytime I hear my original rough mixes cause they are way cooler in many ways.. So..that said..almost from the get-go we were alittle doomed cause we werent willing to do ANYTHING they said and didnt like the feeling of having virtually NO say in anything. We were used to the DIY way of doing things. Then...they decided to release us on Aware Records - a subsidiary of Columbia. Well- these guys HATED pop stuff and HATED "girl bands" and really did little to help us in any way. All their contacts came to expect Train,Five for Fighting, and other similiar bands from Aware and dint know what to make of the Girl fronted Pop band- SparkleDrive. We were out playing some great shows in the midwest and the VH1 Band on the run winner-Flickerstick" had asked us to tour w/ them for awhile. We had played several shows w/ them and both bands felt that their fans "GOT" the other band and we both did really well with Merch so it was a good combo. We were MUCH more rocking live- Val sang lead and played a mean Rickenbacker. I played and sang bgvs - as did the bass player- and the drummer triggered loops. So w/ a 2 guitar, bass and drum outfit and guys singing the bgvs ,it was definitely more "edgy".. ANYWAY..........Columbia nor Aware was very excited about the difference between the live show and the record so after a while we just wanted out. Our lawyer is a NY bigwig (N'Sync,ACDC,INXS,etc..)and basically felt if they werent gonna back up the record with a GOOD push- they should just let us go and thats what they did !! Felt humiliating and frustrating FOR A WHILE- but now we are happy to be doing music HOWEVER we want again. We are planning a cd of 70s cover tunes ( more like REMAKES actually- just modern takes on older songs that were great..any ideas??) as well as a new band cd. we'll see............... You should hear "the Long Story" !!
  8. Have you ever SEEN a stack of cds 7'x 7'and over 6 feet tall ?? Of the SAME cd ? It looks like alot, trust me !! This message has been edited by DANOCASTER on 09-10-2002 at 05:24 PM
  9. thanks justin..lemme know if you want more and I'll work ya a GREAT deal to get the music out !! Thanks
  10. If nobody buys the brush theory, I'd have to say Gil's explanation is the only one that really makes sense- to me at least.
  11. GUYS..I think it depends on each SPECIFIC instance. In most cases, what we are saying we're hearing is BETWEEN tracks on an LP, right??. You hear the beginning of the song just before it "really" comes in?? Thats NOT gonna be bleed thru on a master reel. The masters ,which LPs are cut from, are 2 track mixes and in almost ALL cases have leader between the songs that are sliced in SUPER CLOSE to the start and end of the individual tracks. The leader can't retain any magnetic bleed thru and so it wouldnt create this. On the 2" MASTER tape w/ the individual tracks/takes,etc..you often CAN hear bleed thru- especially (as Mobile stated)if the tape had been stored for long peroids incorrectly. But ,one would rarely ever hear those in a mix unless it was on a VERY LOUD lead vocal- then maybe. In most cases, the mix engineer would mute them out. As for "the brush theory"- it wasnt MY theory but it DOES indeed eliminate the pre echo on about 70% of the instances I hear it - ON MY PARTICULAR SYSTEM. Makes sense though. The brush makes contact w/ the LP and also w/ the cartridge. At louder levels ( which is usually when i hear the pre-echo), it seems very possible that those vibrations could be transmitted to the cartridge. And w/ the distance its spaced from the cartridge- it WOULD be about a 300-400 millisecond delay- which is usually what it is roughly.. I dont know for sure, but I personally have never put up an older MIX reel of tape and heard bleed thru --especially w/ leader. ON the 2"- yes- but not on a finished mix reel... go figure This message has been edited by DANOCASTER on 09-06-2002 at 04:36 PM
  12. Hey Mike..here's another twist on that. I have a Rega P3 (In Kermit the Frog GREEN!!)w/ the INCOGNITO upgrade (HUGE improvement) and a Shure V-15 cartridge. I often hear the same "pre-echo" and searched Vinyl Asylum and found the answer!! My cartridge ,like many, has a brush in front and THAT is what is reading the record prior to the stylus. Flip the brush up and VOILA !!- its gone. Brush back down and there it is again. !! Interesting...very interesting
  13. I asked the seller and his reserve is 1400 POUNDS. What does that translate to in dollars??
  14. In fact..in an effort to get the music out there, $7 will get you two cds shipped. one for you and one for a friend!!!
  15. Thanks guys.. you can PAYPAL $7 to me (Sparkledrive1@aol.com) or you can send a check/cash/M.O ( whatever) to me: Dan Strain 509 Ashlawn Circle Nashville, TN 37211
  16. THANKS CRAIG..YOU FLATTER ME AS FOR AMAZON.COM...Dont pay the damn record company that dropped us $13.98..I'll sell ya one for $5 plus $2 shipping !! (Thats 1/2 price!!..and WE get ALL of it )
  17. I see these fairly often and I would say this is the END of their "good" years. Not a bad receiver but solid state repairs like this can get up there. Seeing as you can buy a 2240 or 2245( which are BOTH better) off ebay in NICE shape for $100 or less, I would say Bail cause most techs will charge $45-50 an hr and you will spend a couple hours worth plus parts.
  18. Hey Craig, Man, I sorry those werent original !! When I bought 'em, the guy said they were original so ,just to check, I took the handles off and the TOP HALF were original so I "***-umed" the woofers were also. MY BAD..Glad you are cool w/ me about it- I didnt know. Had a fun time w/ you and your family last nite. Lemme know how the LaScalas work out. (And get workin' on that Scott ,will ya !!) 20. YEAH..I'm sticking w/ the Chorus 1s. The CWs were just too big in this room and I kinda preferred the smoothness of the Chorus. Mobile..how many pairs?? Man, I dunno. 5-6 pairs. Ever since I was a kid I lived by "If some is good, more is better!!". That'll get you in ALOT of trouble ( and it DID !!) and it kinda got the better of me here. I was estatic about the first pair of Chorus 1s I got and I'm gonna stop there. That said...I will probably end up buying EVERY cheap pair I have come thru our store. If not only just to check em out !! I just got these for $850 and was gonna drop $550 into ALKs and I just rather spend all that money on some cool Neve Mic pres I found for the studio. So thats my story and I sticking w/ it...well...for now. (LOL)
  21. Hey Klipsch Family.. Thought I post here in case anyone wanted these. I know I could get more on Ebay but in another effort to "spread the love"- you guys get 1st dibs. But I cant deal w/shipping so you gotta come to Nashville. I paid $850 for these and I wanna get that outta them. They are CBR's that were finished w/ laquer and he actually did a pretty good job. They come w/the optional risers also. They are from the early 80s. Serial #s 8416378,8416379. Drivers are all original (K77,K57,K33)and work great. B3 network inside. Lemme know if you have any questions.
  22. who ?? you mean RUEBEN KINCADE?? Yeah. he WAS cool. But he never did get skunk smell out of the Partridge Family's outfits- even after they took baths in Tomato Juice !! But he still got to drive around in that bus !!
  23. Anyone notice that pair of Dark Mahogany Cornwall IIs (w/ riser) for $800 OBO...some one should snag those pups !!
  24. first of all...BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT PLAYING THAT CELINE DION CD..THE ACTUAL MUSIC ITSELF MAY ROT THE SYSTEM FROM THE INSIDE OUT..( just a warning )
