  1. Michael, interesting thought and certainly less work Let me "sleep" on that one Bad part is that it will then weigh 60 lbs instead of 40 lbs
  2. YES ... 2 cuft as in the original box or 7 cuft as "recommended." The numbers don't make any sense to me
  3. Yeah ... that is the plan. Just trying to do it right re cab size, but terribly confused. For the woofer only recommended sizes range from 0.9 to 4 cuft ???? Also ... have some heritage cloth left over from my (little) project of grilles for the KPT bass boxes and separate cabinets for the horns. YES; WAF! Cheers, Emile
  4. Going to try that Funny part is ... got this speaker last Thursday and put it in front of the fireplace ... wife did not "notice it" till 1/2 hour ago ... her comments were "not positive" ... Haha
  5. Thank you SIR Yes; thought about that but all edges are "rounded" and as an amateur woodworker, I have no clue how to veneer those Yes, my wife strongly agrees ... "never intended to see the inside of a living room" Cheers, Emile
  6. Thanks @twk123. Haha ... Great minds think alike ... that was my first thought also Read the reviews on this and the quality is not "great." Plus thought I could make the box even smaller by going to a rectangular design vs the trapezoidal shape Cheers, Emile
  7. Hope you experts can give me some guidance as I am completely lost Trying to build a new cabinet for a 12" woofer (and a 14x8" horn). All info I have seen is very conflicting; showing volume sizes differing by up to 300% Background ... did not like my (small) Klisch KV2 center speaker (with KPT-904 mains), so was looking for another solution. Found a Yamaha stage monitor speaker (S112IV; 12" woofer and 14x8 horn w/ 2" diaphragm, pic at end of post), and was very pleased with the sound. FYI, forum veteran @Thaddeus Smith tried it with a similar (15") Yammie and I'm pretty sure he is impressed also. But; it is a stage monitor, meaning "rat fur" cloth covering which yields a 0/10 on the WAF meter. So; why not put the components in another (wife friendly) walnut box - haha with a Klipsch logo? (And, to keep the size small, I thought a sealed box would be OK as it is a center speaker and doesn't need low bass.) After days and days, I finally got the T/S specs from Eminence (mfg of the woofer; Yamaha model JAY51200). They are: 05-RE OHMS 5.66 13-FS HZ 47.72 06-LE MH .93 14-MMS GMS 34.80 07-QM 3.10 15-CMS mm/N .3195 08-QE .480 16-RMS NS/M 3.3707 09-QT .420 17-VAS LTRS 127.19 10-XMAX MM 3.00 18-SD SCM 532.36 11-BL TM 11.05 19-EBP 98.6 12-EFF % 2.75 20-SPL dB 96.4 So; plugged these into a couple of online cabinet size calculators and got 3-4 cuft as recommended for a SEALED box (over 7 cuft for ported). First comment; does not make much sense as the original Yammie box is ported and ONLY has an internal volume of about 2.0 cuft. (I "***-umed" that I could build a sealed box even smaller than that.) Anyone ???? Next it gets even more confusing. Eminence told me a "cheaper' replacement for this driver is their model "Beta-12A-2." Eminence shows a ported box volume for this at 4.75 cuft and a sealed box (with heavy polyfill) at 0.9 cuft. ????? 1/5th the size ???? Parts-Express recommends 2.36 cuft sealed and 7.35 cuft ported. PE's 2.36 vs Eminence 0.9 cuft just because of some polyfill ?????? Obviously these numbers are "all over the place" and I have NO CLUE why Furthermore, don't want to spend $200 (baltic birch and veneer) plus weeks building a box which is completely wrong My only "uneducated" solution is to "copy" the Yamaha design ... or throw it away as my wife will not allow a "rat fur" box Many, many thanks for any inputs/thoughts Cheers, Emile
  8. Just to show I am not an idiot ... just confused in building an enclosure. Another "recommended" replacement for my Yamaha JAY51200 speaker is the Eminence Delta Pro-12A. But ... recommended "sealed" box size is 0.54 cuft or less than half the size of the other recommended replacement ... Haha ... Maybe a bottle of wine will help Cheers, Emile
  9. OK Redesign Was going to make a horn/woofer box with ONLY the woofer section sealed. Due to geometry it results in a box the same size as the original ported one. So; will just make the "whole" box sealed ... seems like an easier (and smaller) solution
  10. Thanks! Yes; @joessportster gave me the link a little earlier Will use it if I can't find anything else ... it's a "replacement" speaker ... also it is less than 1/2 the price of the original Yammie speaker ???? ... so; is it "close" ???? Or; as a last resort ... I can calculate the "original ported volume," then take say 70% of that for the minimum closed volume. Haha Just have NO CLUE how sensitive speakers are to "volume." (Shooting for the smallest box size due to WAF.) Thanks, Emile
  11. Thanks! Yeah; so far it is testing nicely. Using a passive xo. Primarily got it for the horn ... it can keep up with my KPT-904 horns FYI ... @Thaddeus Smith is trying it with the 15" stage monitor (Yamaha S115..). See thread "PA speakers for home use."
  12. No It is/was a stage monitor speaker with "rat fur." WAF 0/10 Now using it as a center speaker and quite pleased with it. 12" woofer plus a 14x8" horn with a 2" diaphragm. No "deep" bass needed Cheers, Emile
  13. Joe ... you are AWESOME! Thank you very.very much. OK; designing the box now. Sealed bottom with 13x8" horn on top (inside box but open back) THANK YOU SIR!
  14. Joe, thanks! Your previous comment mentioned box size ).75cuft, so I thought you had "seen" the specs. Appreciate you "looking," but please do not spend any time on it. It is a "proprietary" model made by Eminence ... have emailed everyone ... sofar nothing Cheers, Emile
  15. Joe, Thanks! Yes, have to subtract the diver itself, etc. Did you find the specs/recommendations for my JAY51200 driver on Parts-Express.com?????? If you did, give me a link ... have been searching for days Many, many thanks
  16. Thanks all ... learning about the proper "volume." Build a Parts-Express 15" subwoofer (kit) and think it is awesome. Now trying to put a Yamaha S112IV (OK; the components) into another box as my wife does not "allow" a "rat fur" stage monitor box in the living room The woofer is a 12" Yamaha JAY51200 ... hoping to get the recommended box size from Yamaha or from the original mfg Eminence. Thought I found a similar driver from Parts-Express ... but STRANGELY when you compare the recommended box volume from Parts-Express VERSUS the mfg's recommendation they are WAY, WAY different ... like a factor of 2! Why, and who do we believe? Cheers, Emile
  17. After 2 days, finally found the woofer model ... Yamaha JAY51200. No luck on detailed specs so I can find the proper size for a "box." Emailed Parts-Express and Yamaha. Hope I'll get a response as I hate to just "guess"
  18. YEAH ... it's called "rat fur" Cannot mention "rat" to my wife or it will be in the trash. So; new box ... have some heritage cloth left over also
  19. Thanks ... yes sounds pretty good ... have Cornwall's in the rear also Wife has OK'd it (without the Yammie). Have to pour her a lot of wine though So think I''l put the Yammie in a walnut (or mahogany) box Have some mahogany ply left ... think I have enough for the sides and the top (can't see the rest anyhow . Thinking box with a closed section for the woofer and open back for the horn. Also have some Heritage cloth left Waiting for the woofer specs so I can determine the needed closed volume.
  20. Haha ... here's mine ... smaller, 12" woofer Seriously thinking about a new box
  21. HOLY COW ... had not even heard of these Think they will allow these in a 65+ community when I have to go there?
  22. Anyone for some advice on box size just for the 12" woofer? Explanation ... not fully tested, but initial impressions are awesome. Only problem is the "rat fur" box which does not pass the WAF. So; thought I could build just a box for the 12' woofer and place the horn in an open box on top of it Don't know the woofer specs (trying to get them from Parts-Express) but it seems a generally accepted "closed" box should be slightly larger than 1 cuft. (And a "closed" box would give me "tighter bass" ... and a smaller box ) Appreciate your thoughts! Cheers, Emile P.S. Not tested on louder volumes, but was just now listening to IndyCar practice. Engines sound great with the horns
  23. Joe, Not much help. but veneered a 15" Parts-Express sub. Looked everywhere for veneer ... some decent places, but often way to much for shipping Finally remembered I had gotten mahogany plywood from a local specialty shop. Emailed them about walnut veneer and YES they had some! Very nice; was able to check it out AND get it locally. So ... suggest you look at local specialty wood shops.Even some "local" places like (overpriced) Woodcraft my be good. Cheers, Emile
  24. Continued ... OK; sorry ... further testing delayed. Wife "has to" watch a couple of previous episodes of NCIS. Will try tomorrow
