  1. Hi WMcD, Yeah, found my result rather surprising also ... and the last time I did Fourier analysis was when Lotus 1-2-3 was popular (over 30 years ago?) so I'm a little "rusty" on the subject Will do some more digging to see if I can correct it. Cheers, Emile
  2. OK; revisited some old physics textbooks In a "perfect system," the harmonics are obviously multiples of the fundamantal wave with frequency f1, i.e. f1=2*f2=3*f3...=n*fn. The peak sound level ( A=amplitude ) has the same linear relation, i.e. A1=2*A2=3*A3 ... =n*An. For example ... fundamental is 100%, harmonics are 50%, 33%, 25%, 20% etc. A lot LOUDER than I thought So if we hear the highest A8 piano note at about 5kHz, we will hear the first harmonic at 10kHZ (at 50% sound level), and the second at 15kHz (at 33.3%) - and anyone should be able to hear these. If we take the "middle" A8 on a piano and look for the 13th harmonic, we get it at 6.16kHz (starting range of my tweeter) at 7% of the original sound pressure. Should be able to hear these (and a lot more) also. Just my 2 cents ... correct me if I'm wrong
  3. LarryC, Yes, complicated indeed. But, if we take your 100 Hz note, we "know" it has harmonics in the 6 KHz+ area (my Forte I tweeters) ... but ... these harmonics are so far up the scale that their strength/volume/dB is so much reduced that they are virtually "gone." However, a high piano note (say 4 kHZ) has a first complimentary frequency at 8 kHz which certainly can be heard. Anyone have a sense of the power drop off in these harmonics? (Meaning 100%, 30%, 10%, etc??)
  4. garyrc, Thank you SIR! As a scientist and engineer, I am (a bit) familiar with harmonics from systems ... but terribly unfamiliar with "audio harmonics." Your response cleared up a lot for me. Many thanks! PS; Forte I crossover to tweeters is a 6 kHZ. Regards, Emile
  5. Thanks wstrickland1, Will do! Cheers, Emile
  6. Question about "good sound" and harmonics. Had a problem with a set of Forte I's I picked up; believed my problem was in the mid-range ... primary tones; but (after installing Crites tweeter diaphragms) now think the 2nd, 3rd, etc harmonics come through via the tweeters and produce the richness in sound that I was missing. Would very much like to hear some comments on this (or links to explanations). (Added note to the "some of the" experts on this forum; Yes, tried searching this site for many hours ... but probably missed page 78 on thread # 12643. Sorry Some of us "newbies" are still trying to learn ) Many thanks, Emile
  7. Hi John and heydujkej, Thanks a lot ... will try shortly Cheers, Emile
  8. Thanks dtr20 and HDBRbuilder. Downloading some of these now
  9. Thanks to all for your help/suggestions on my Forte I's. Think (?) my main problem was solved by installing Ti woofer diaphragms (will do the caps later). I believed my problem was in the midrange ... primary tones; but now think the 2nd, 3rd, etc harmonics come through via the tweeters and produce the richness in sound that I was missing. 10. Hi robert_kc, One more if you don't mind Saw you have a Pilot amp SA-260. Tried my first attempt into tube amps with a fairly inexpensive Pilot 230, 23W/ch, from my local "record" store, and was not very impressed vs my Marantz 1060. Any suggestions? Thanks, Emile
  11. Hi robert_kc, Just got your "further" explanation. Awesome; thanks! Going to sleep on this - need another bottle of wine to buy one Thanks, Emile
  12. Hi robert_kc, Just got your "further" explanation. Awesome; thanks! Going to sleep on this - need another bottle of wine to buy one Thanks, Emile Add-on ... OK; almost convinced Just truing to "hide" this purchase fro my wife
  13. Hi robert_kc, Just got your "further" explanation. Awesome; thanks! Going to sleep on this - need another bottle of wine to buy one Thanks, Emile
  14. Add-on ... Oppo-205 is $1300+ at Crutchfield Worth the $$'s?
  15. Hi robert_kc, Wide range of music. Jimi Hendrix, (old) Chicago to Keiko Matsui (jazz) to Pavarotti and Beethoven. So; think it is worth the $$'s to get an Oppo/other player to "try this?" Many thanks, Emile
  16. Thanks DizRotus, derrickdj1, and Schu, Thought I researched the history on this, but did not find the results. Sorry! Yes; "garbage in, garbage out." And a "larger" file size does not make it any better if if was "crap" to start out with But ... any "better" recording in hi-fi res? And what equipment would I need? Cheers, Emile
  17. Hi billybob, Add-on ... yes, Bob Crites' knowledge and advice is awesome! But ... what really makes him special is his "INTEGRITY." As a"newbie" I have asked him several times about some upgrades - willing to spend some good money; But ... instead of taking my $$'s, I have been given good advice instead of wasting $$'s. Extremely honorable! Cheers, Emile
  18. Hi, Searched the forum many times, but really did not find any answers ... so; starting a new topic. Think my systems sound pretty good ( Forte I's on Marantz 1060 and Cornwall I's on a Marantz 2252B with another 3 1/2 pair of Klipsch speakers on an AVR) ... but CD's seem to be limited to 16 bit / 44.1 kHz. Currently much "better" files are available (24 bit up to 192 kHZ). Has anyone tried these and found a "major" difference? Yes; can probably download some and try them via my (modest $$) AVR, but my AVR sucks (sorry) compared to my vintage stereo. So; what do I need to try this on vintage equipment and is is worth the money? Cheers, Emile
  19. Add-on ... Still going through my music library ... but think it is hard to beat Dave Brubeck (Time Out / Take Five) and Super Session (Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and Steve Stills) for any reference music. OK; shows "my age," but "Super Session" was wildly popular during my many, many years in college (don't laugh ... got some advanced degrees ) . Cheers, Emile
  20. Use a RocketFish subwoofer wireless kit on my 15" M&K custom box with a 400W amp. Pretty pleased with it and really do not detect a delay. But ... usually on my third glass of wine before I play with it Cheers, Emile
  21. Yeah, still looking for a good subwoofer also. Tried the 10" Klipsch one but was not impressed. But ... don't think I can sneak a refrigerator size one into our house without my wife noticing it Had a JBL (Pro ??) 12" one which was good for cannon fire in movies but lousy for music. Found an M&K 15" woofer in a 4 cuft box on CraigsList (nice oak box ... score!). Added the "old" 400W amp to it and it's much better for music. And ... did not cost me much Wireless via Rocketfish from AVR, coupled with Marantz 2252B and Cornwall's . Cheers, Emile
  22. Hi Dave / wvu80, Male vocals ... why did I not think of this Big Pavarotti fan, so I'll try "Nessum Dorma." Play Pavarotti/others often in our "main" room - with 3 1/2 pr of Klipsch speakers on an AVR plus Cornwall I's on a Marantz 2252B. But Pavarotti never made it to my "stereo test room" (Marantz 1060 / Pilot 230 tube with Forte I's and KG4's). How stupid can I be Going to try it now ... after I open up a bottle of wine (it's after 5pm in FL). Cheers, Emile
  23. Hi wvu80, Thanks! Digging through my collection since I do have some Chuck Mangione records/CD's - and loved his music. And know I have Chick Corea also ... somewhere Will download Dixie Chicks and Randy Travis later to try. My old standby test music was "Country - film music by Charles Gross." Awesome on "big" Klipsch's. Sorry, file too large to add here, but here is a link to (inferior) youtube sound ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOa6Xl4Ep4I Cheers, Emile
  24. Yes; wanted to try tube amps also. But wasn't ready to shell out thousands of $$'s. (Aside from being a Klipsch "nut," I do have another hobby - boats - unfortunately even more expensive than Klipsch ) So, got a (cheap) Pilot 230 tube amp for $200 from my local (Tampa, FL) record store. 24W/ch; hooked up to Forte I's and not bad ... but did an A/B comparison with my SS Marantz 1060 and the Marantz won So; do I forget about tube amps, or do I need to spend big big bucks? Cheers, Emile
