  1. Hi, Say i buy the Yamaha RX-V430 which has a fixed xover at 90Hz (or so the pdf manual says), and I pair it with the Quintets, with the satellites having reasonable response up to 100Hz or so...does this mean i have to live with some upper-bass hole at 90-100Hz? Is there any solution to this issue, other than buy another receiver that has either a variable xover, or a 100Hz+ xover?
  2. Ackkk...unfortunately, PartsExpress doesn't ship internationally...but AdireAudio does. Hmmmm...I wonder how much shipping would be on the Tempest though. This message has been edited by fs1 on 06-23-2002 at 10:48 AM
  3. I was actually planning to get an entry-level 12" sub like a KSW-12 or JBL PB-12 when I transfer my HT in my living room (I'm currently using a JBL 8" in a small hallway). I'm planning to spend around $500 for a new sub. If I go the DIY route, for $500 will I be able to make something much better than the KSW-12 or PB-12? 4. well, i'm not a good teacher hmmm....these RS drivers are, i think, Pioneer branded drivers. so what kind of bass (loudness, tightness) can i expect from them in a properly designed sealed enclosure... this question applies for the 12", and the 8" and 10" Ears was talking about? on the other hand, how much better would the Adire Shiva 12" driver or the Audax 10" Aerogel be, again assuming a good sealed enclosure calculated using relevant parameters of these drivers?
  5. All right, HornEd BTW, about my previous question, is it ok to have the subwoofer near my receiver (Harman Kardon AVR2000), or will the vibrations from the sub damage or make the unit function unstably?
  6. So, I'll corner load then Regarding corner loading, is it advisable to have the subwoofer positioned at an equal distance from each of the perpendicular walls in a corner (say 5 cm to both walls), or is it better to have it at different distances from the side partial wall, and the back wall (say 5 cm from back wall, 10 cm from partial side wall)?
  7. I forgot to ask: Doesn't corner-loading produce "muddy" bass without using an equalizer? Thanks again
  8. HornEd et al: Thanks for the helful advice
  9. Uh-oh...about the crossover: I'm using a Harman Kardon AVR2000 with a fixed crossover at 100Hz, and mini-bookshelves with 4" woofers (JBL SCS178) that can only go down to 100Hz. So, I really have to make use of the 100Hz x-over on my receiver. In this case, where bass up to around ~100Hz will still go to the subwoofer, will it still be ok to place the sub as in my diagram? Secondly, if I do this, I will have to plug the subwoofer directly to a wall-plug, w/o any surge protectors, while my receiver and source are plugged in a surge protector which in turn is plugged into the 2nd socket on the same wall-plug (whew!). Will this be harmful to the sub? Will this produce ground-loop humming/buzzing? Thirdly, in case rear placement is not feasible, I can, as another option, place the sub near the front left speaker and also near the receiver. Is this all right; won't the vibrations from the sub, if in proximity with the left front and receiver, not cause harmful vibrations on said speaker and receiver? (Please see second attached JPG file) Fourthly, in either case the donwfiring subwoofer will be placed on top of tiles-over-concrete floor. How will this affect sound as compared to a hardwood floor? Thanks This message has been edited by fs1 on 05-24-2002 at 05:42 PM
  10. So, to answer the PM 5.1 sub vs KSW10: It seems justin and boomer, say KSW10 is much better than the PM 5.1 sub, while theEars says the opposite, ie the PM 5.1 sub is slightly better..
  11. Is it all right to place a subwoofer beside the couch in line with the rear speakers in a partial-corner directly below the left surround speaker? Please see attached jpeg diagram......
  12. Silly question: Just how are good are these speakers?
  13. ...and if the supposedly boomy/rumbly KSW10 is better than the PM 5.1 sub...then does that mean the PM 5.1 is also boomy, which contradicts most reviews of the PM 5.1 sub??
  14. Arghhhh..yes yes, I know at first glance the $400 KSW10 should beat the $400 ProMedia 5.1. BUT this question springs from the fact that several people have claimed the the KSW10 is one boomy amd underpowered mess (or something to this effect), while most people consider the PM 5.1 dual 8-inch subwoofers as the tightest/best multimedia subwoofer out. I was wondering if this was a case of the BEST multimedia subwoofer beating the WORSE HT subwoofer, regardless of price. Take note that theears have commented that the Paradigm PDR8 HT subwoofer doesn't even beat the lowly ProMedia 2.1 6.5-inch multimedia subwoofer! So, HT or more expensive subwoofers don't necessarily beat out the best multimedia subwoofers; that is, if you believe theears comments....which is another issue I suppose. Also the KSW10 has only 78% of the surface area of the 8-inch dualies of the PM 5.1 sub...so that may be a factor, too. Again, this isn't so obvious as some would think, unless you have heard BOTH of these subwoofers and don't judge by "class" and price alone..
  15. just wondering...with all the "bad" opinions the ksw10 are getting, how do they compare withe the Promedia 5.1 dual 8" multimedia subwoofer?
  16. Getting back to the Boston Acoustics BA7800: First off, I have NEVER heard that system, but I have some doubts as to the "consistency" of BA products. I have heard their HTIB setups, the $600 DT6000/DPS5.1 and the $1,000 DT7000. I wasn't impressed with their DT-series for both HT and music. The DT6000 and DT7000 have poor music soundstage imaging (reminds me of what I heard from the PM 2.1 and 4.1); its bass impact and volume for HT use is underwhelming, even with bass levels turned up (even on the 8" DT7000 sub). Anyways, it may be that the Unity-based (or so people here say) BA7800 performs much better than the $1000 BA DT7000 or the lower-end DT6000.
  17. Just wondering if anyone can measure the SPL level of the THX Optimizer tones in Pearl Harbor R1 THX? If you have an AVIA or Video Essentials (VE) DVD this is easily done because the pink noise in AVIA is at 85dB (75dB for VE), so using an SPL meter you can just simply find the difference in dB between the AVIA/VE pink noise and the pink noise using the Pearl Harbor THX Optimizer. Thanks
  18. Hi, My mini-bookshelf speakers have their ports at the front part, so I can wall mount them without blocking the port. So what is the consensus here, in terms of sound quality, which is better to have them on metal speaker stands or to wall mount them on either concrete wall or wood wall?
  19. I was thinking of getting a Yamaha RX-V430. The thing is, all 5 of my speakers (surrounds, mains, center)have a nominal impedance of 4 ohms, while the Yamaha receiver can only switch between a configuration of all > 8 ohms or to mains > 4 ohms, rear/center> 6 ohms. How will this affect this setup? How will it affect the volume, power and performace in general of my 4-ohms speaks if I use the 8 ohm Yamaha RX-V430?
  20. How does this low-cost HT compare with the updated Take 5.2?
  21. Definitely too overwhelming bass
  22. ANyone care to re-post a working link?? Or just what's it about.....I guess many of u have seen it and it won't be a spoiler anymore.
  23. The grill-less 4.1 you see in reviews is just the vanilla 4.1 with the grill removed. There is only ONE Promedia 4.1 model (and 1 Promedia v2-400, and 1 Promedia 5.1)
