  1. Here are some crappy cell pics.  I have some angle extrusion that I will be doing all edges with, and pro wraparound corners.  Then the heavy duty cage over the woofer, and they will be complete.  I know they look like some serious beaters, and that's the best look I could hope for with as bad as they were starting off.  I had the thought to make them look like a pair of speakers that have been bouncing around in the back of some band's van, for 40 years of road trips.

So did use use Heresy 1's with K55 drivers/E networks modified like my originals, or Heresy 1.5's with K-53's and E-2 networks, modified/cap refreshed, or modified otherwise like Treyphans??

These are 1979 vintage, so the plain old E networks, new caps, reversed wiring on the now Cornwall B type network.  I would like to find a set of 1.5's reasonably priced to make another pair.

All the drivers were original, K-22, K-55-V push button, and the K-77 tweeter.  The back panel screws were all mismatched, so I bought all new hardware.

Another great song if you want to test the bass:  Mystic Rhythms, Rush.

You are very welcome. The term "unanticipated popularity and success" comes to mind. Glad to see so many people agree with my original astonishment about this mod. I'm working on Super Heresy v 2.0 as we speak, but it probably won't be as large of an impact as the original, except for weight loss and nuance of tweeter dispersion (improved?). Either way, I think it will deserve it's own thread to avoid further confusion, or, perhaps, it should remain here?? What do you all think?

I think it should be a brand new, shiny thread to avoid confusion and mixed signals within this thread.

  4. @Treyphan I did have a Homer moment during the rebuild.  I had just finished cutting the port, cementing the tube in place, and finished the last bit of egg crate.  I buttoned it up, and plugged it into my amp.  It sounded very flat.  Not good.  I was shaking my head, and wondering where I went wrong.  I opened the back and rechecked my connections at the crossover.

Sure enough, I had forgotten to run the squawker and tweeter negative to positive.  I had simply wired it straight, according to the connections shown on the side of the crossover.

Swapped the wires around quickly, buttoned it up again, and PRESTO!  Needless to say, I felt like a bit of an idiot.  [Homer] DOH! [/Homer]

@Oicu812, glad to hear your another happy usernof @ClaudeJ1‘s SH converts. Aren’t they great???!!!

    What tweeter did you use??

i had a set of Cornwall ones I restored for a customer at the same time. I like the Heresy just as much, I’d done the Crites crossover mods to to the Cornwall 1’s and reveneered and restored, strengthened the cabinets. They were greats but for the bigger size and price tag of anCornwall, I’ll take a SH any day.

Though I am interested in a Modded Cornwall.

we have similar music tastes, I love me some classic rock And good 60’s/70’s singer/songwriter stuff. Also a junkie if everything from bluegrass to jazz to classical.

Jazz in these is killer, Stan Get hangs out in my living room every night if anyone ever wants to come see...err, hear him!

    well, enjoy!

Thanks!  I didn't do anything with the tweeters, because I wouldn't get any benefit from upgrading them.  I have high pitched tinnitus, with many different discordant notes in either ear, covering a lot of the high end.  All from bending down to put air in a motorcycle tire that exploded next to my head, back in the late '80's.

The cabinets I picked up were horrible, but the drivers all worked.  One side of this particular speaker had an entire corner de-laminated, and it was missing a third of the veneer on one side.  I have gone with body filler, re-laminated the corner, filled in all of the chips and missing veneer pieces on every edge.  I decided to make these black textured,  and it looks decent for such a beater.

I was just doing some Blackmore's Night, and the sound is a little awe inspiring.  Stevie Ray Vaughn sounds great, too.

  6. @ClaudeJ1  I must, first off, say "Thank you" for the incredible mod, and all the work you put into this project.  So, here it is:  Thank You!

I appreciate you sharing this work with the Klipsch forum,  and for the benefit of anyone on the 'Net.   I just completed my first Super, and in side by side testing against the stock Heresy, this thing is awesome.  I don't have anything in the way of hardware to do "real world" curves, all I have is my aging, tinnitus filled ears.  With that being said, the mids and bass are outstanding with this mod.  The difference is night and day.

I'm listening to some Heart, Jethro Tull, Eagles, Foreigner, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, etc.  The sound out of this speaker is crisp, clear, and the bass / midbass gains with the Eminence Deltra Pro 12A are fantastic.  I didn't mess with the stock tweeter, because I would not be able to tell any difference there with the hearing issues.  I know it produces sound, so that's good.  I will mess around with placement, seeing if I can tune it just right.

For something bass heavy, I played "Juke Box Hero" and it sounded out of this world.  Comparable to the Cornwalls I have heard in the past, maybe a bit better (Probably because these are MINE!)

Anyway, for anyone thinking about undertaking this project, I would say that it is well worth the effort and expense.  You will not be disappointed.

It's not the same, but that's obviously because of the difference between the front porting of the HIP and the rear port of the Super.  The bass response of the HIP is improved modestly, but at the same time, I don't think the HIP is as placement sensitive because of that front porting.  I still much prefer the Super.

Any reason why you wouldn't plug the front ports, and do the backward firing ports?

    Hello Claude,

    What all would that entail?

Here's the link to the @ClaudeJ1 Heresy --> Baby Cornwalls modification thread.  Basically, you upgrade the woofer to an Eminence Delta Pro 12A (right at $129 each, but there are other options for the woofer as well), rearrange the crossover a bit while replacing the capacitors (which you would want to do anyway), and there is an optional tweeter upgrade.

You would add a 4 1/8" port for the bass in the back panel.  Then you would do a layer of egg crate sound foam on the inside.  It's all really straightforward, and it boosts the midrange quite a bit, plus you get a lot of bonus bass out of the deal.  It's a Cornwall in a much smaller cabinet, which is a benefit for apartment dwellers or someone with a small office that wants big sound (this includes me!).  I'm using this project to also upgrade them to a 5 way binding post setup, and adding fast blow fuses.  This is a good idea here in Central Florida, where we have lightning strikes nearby almost daily, with brownouts and surges.

I am in the middle of doing a pair myself, taking my time and enjoying the process!

    That's a fantastic looking setup.

Are the Heresy speakers in Pompano on eBay yours?  I was looking at a pair with a heavy black ring on top of the right speaker...

Not really directing this towards this listing....  but I get a kick out of that.

I see time after time after time after time....after time!  People selling a Klipsch speaker and it's always been babied in a smoke free, child free residence.... never been turned up too loud....

What the heck does it matter?!!!  We all know they've been cranked from time to time, nothing wrong with that.  Heck, maybe that completes the 'breaking in' of the drivers that so many are frightened about...

I liken it to "I have a hammer....but I never hit a nail very hard with it"

These were owned by a 90 year old lady that never abused them, and she only listened to gospel on Sundays.

What has the ability to make a pair CF3 look small?     A pair of CF4.

Just running the CF4's through their paces to ensure everything works before I go through and detail them.

Congratulations on the nice pair!  Can we see the sides?

Now all we need is a new model (CF-5?) that uses 15" woofer pairs...

Great sounding speakers fresh from a local estate. These look to be from the eighties or maybe nineties. Tested and sounding great. Cane grilles with beautiful walnut veneer cabinets. A few scattered scratches and dings. | eBay!

Not likely original, but probably sounds like a Heresy.  What are the SNs of that pair?

Here are two auctions I found.  These appear to be original, the "W" set has K-55-V squawkers (and seem to be built later into 1981), and the "X" set has K-52-H and are being sold with the original Klipsch box (and seem to be built early in 1982).

So it appears to me that the switch occurred between 1981 and 1982, from looking at these photos:
