  1. Excellent, professional looking. Looks like orange drop coupling caps, my favorite. What's the transistors for if they are TO-202, TO-204 devices. Hard to tell just from picture. First thoughts for bias as George at tubelabs does or possible a regulated voltage supply.
  2. Honestly never of Classe' before. Did a search and found review at Stereophile of the Classe' CA-200 and from the description of the circuitry it was a well designed and made machine. Hard to find a niche' in high end audio. Wish them the best and wish I could hear one of them. Class A is class A. For those that honestly do not understand the differences in the classes a little research will explain why it is the purist form. Especially when it is in SE 'single ended' mode. This is not to say other classes do sound exceptionally good if designed properly. Still on the technical side class A is still class A.
  3. I would not call yourself an idiot. For the past few days I have been listening with my class A/B amplifier with at least 150 watts per channel and it is excellent sounding. Just one of those old men driving a Ferrari 45 mph on the interstate is all. The design and components used determine how an amp is going to sound. Forget about power with our speakers. Granted I do have my A/B amplifier biased where it probably stays in class A for 5 or more watts though.
  4. Depends on the class D amplifier. I have a TPA3255 amp build which sounds great with our speakers. At least 100 watts of clean power.
  5. Most are unaware of how little power horn speakers require. Most are trained to think from your first dip into audio is that more power means better sound which is a fallacy that true audiophiles learn. Power ratings are what sells and believe me the manufacturers know this. It is only when you get into high end audio that quality and design becomes more important than power rating. What really became aware to me of this fact is when I started seeing SET 300b amplifiers with 5 watts per channel selling for $25,000 or more but mostly in Japan. With SS amplifiers more power is going to be required because of the way tubes vs SS clips but you will find 25 or 30 watts sufficient for our speakers. This is not to say that a cheap 25 watt amplifiers is going to sound good. Cheap 25 watt amplifiers are just that, made with cheap parts and not a lot of effort put into design.
  6. Nelson Pass' signature. One of his companies called Firstwatt says it all. Goes on to say "who cares what it sounds like at 100 watts if it does not sound good at 1 watt" or something to that effect.
  7. Having veneer is a plus. Later most all the manufacturers went to vinyl on wood then particle board then vinyl on metal. I would appreciate the manual. Hifiengine only has the S-7100 and not the A. Does have the schematic for the A but no service manual. Will PM you and will gladly pay shipping cost. I plan on doing a complete recap and alignment along with cleaning and wood repairs if necessary.
  8. Just bought one for $90 which includes shipping. Why not. I just love the looks of the wood cases and shining chrome from years ago. I believe the case is wood veneer but could be wrong. Case looks excellent along with unit looking clean. Missing some knobs but that is no big deal. Nothing special about those knobs anyway. Supposedly runs but we'll see. Bought as parts not working but that is what I am looking for when shopping for another receiver for my collection. Any of those low powered great looking receivers will please those that listen mostly as background music. Certainly will rock with our speakers but not so much with the popular conventional speakers that like more oomf.
  9. Bought Bose 901's V2 new and enjoyed them for many years. Sound decent with 90 watt amplifier but really came to life with 200 watts. Mine were the sealed version which required a lot of watts. I was perfectly happy with them until I heard LaScala's and after purchasing them never seriously considered any other speaker since. Still have those 901's. They were sitting in my son's storage room outside. Still look decent and to my surprise the speakers are still good. After my 901's I understand they went to foam surround speakers which fall to pieces after a few years. Could not find the equalizer until a month or so ago but my son finally cleaned out the storage room and found it. Not in the best of shape and needs rebuilding. Future project just to stay busy. When introduced they were highly received by anyone hearing them. Big broad sound stage which was lacking way back then with the rage was acoustic suspension speakers which was not noted for a good soundstage. Price was much cheaper then K-horn or LaScala and much smaller. Horns just have big soundstage, low distortion, and that great dynamics which is what music is all about.
  10. Been tempted to add the Sherwood S-7100A to my collection but was hesitant because of how it would sound with those transformers on the output stage. I will look at them more closely now. After saying the S-7100A has transformers on the output circuit I checked the service manual I have and it is for the S-7100 which has the transformers. HiFiengine does only has manual for S-7100 but does show schematic for S7100A which does not have transformers in the output stage. Totally different schematic from the S-7100. Same site says the A model has less power. Does not seem right being most of the time when Manufactorers have A-B etc later models power increases and so does improvements. All this does not matter as long as S-7100A sound nice. Except when one plans on refurbishing one.
  11. Apologies if someone took what I post as being offensive. I do not believe there are any bad guys on this forum. Getting along and being civil is far more important then being right or believing you are right. Unfortunately not always the case on social media forums. I only participate to help and try to learn.
  12. Just a snarky remark from an old member is all. Perfect example on what I have already said. I just do not see what I did or said that was so offensive. Is taking up for Klipsch engineers a bad thing here? The honest truth is that the engineers did a good job with the crossovers they have designed. The proof is all the sales they had with the speakers with AL crossovers. A lot like what they heard on showrooms that was prevalent back then.
  13. Probably right. All is good as far as I am concerned.
  14. Do not know exactly what you are talking about??? Seems to be the other way around and I made others unhappy about what I said. Truth hurts I guess. Not to be said on this forum is that what you mean?
  15. The AL crossover has been trashed on this forum for a long time. That is the sum of it. The back and forth started when I said sellers of crossovers are the ones that benefit from this kind of talk without reference to anyone. Then some members got on the defense of the sellers because they are long time members with a devoted following. I really have better things to do then continue on this thread.
  16. I deleted the first post this morning not wanting conflict. People should think hard before saying they know better then the engineers at Klipsch actually.
  17. You and I have around the same number of tube amplifiers.
  18. Just wanted to add that I apologize to anyone that I may have offended disagreeing with them. Believe me I am smart enough not to lock horns with Dean. I lurked for many years without posting and know better then that.
  19. Guys I did not intend to step on the toes any of the old members on the forum. I was warned on other forums the old timers on this site can be a rough bunch. I have been in the electronic field my entire life as a technician not an designer nor do I have any degrees. Looking at the schematic I see nothing electronically wrong with the AL crossover. Remove the notch filters and the design is pretty simple. The notch filters are there to flatten the frequency response as Marvel in a post intuited is a good thing before he called me dude in a derogatory manner because I disagree with him. Someone please show me on the schematic where the AL crossover has a fault electronically that makes it a bad crossover. That is all that I am saying. I will bow to the old members and let this thread proceed without me.
  20. I can agree with this statement if one must, or think they must, buy new crossovers that own LaScala's with AL crossovers. Again if you like what you are hearing with the AL crossovers why try and fix what is not broken. If one has never heard of this forum that own AL's from the 80's they are more then likely perfectly happy with what they are hearing. The engineer that designed the AL along with management thought it was an improvement. Large parts count that was not cheap to make so they did not do it just to add to the cost of the speaker. I wish now that I had never posted on this thread but I do not like to hear that Klipsch engineers made an bad sounding speaker. Never happened especially when PWK was the head of the company.
  21. My thoughts exactly. We do not all hear alike.
  22. Klipsch changed to the AA from the A to protect the 5 watt rated K-77 they were having to replace under warranty. Added diodes as well. As least that is what I heard or thought.
  23. Be sure to change the tweeter though or you will be buying one anyways after it burns out.
  24. From a seller of crossovers of course. Bob was honest and as stated in the above post "not the best" but that is just his opinion and Bob had no engineer degree that I am aware of. Another factor is cost to build the AL and try to sell it. Parts count is high and probably be no market trying to build and sell an AL. No one will disagree that Bob was a good business man that made a profitable product. Listen guys that are going after me I am not trying to start arguments and I know there are many that love Bob and Dean on this forum but to say the AL was an awful crossover is just not correct. I have nothing against either of them and they did and do make excellent crossovers. I read about Dean's experiment with batteries in a crossover and have wanted to experiment with that design. Dean is a great person from all accounts but, no offense Dean, a 'little' opinionated as well as I can be at times.
