That is an ill-posed question. Is a Jeep inherently inferior to a Ferrari? If you're going to the racetrack, then yes. But if you're navigating the Rubicon Trail, then the answer changes.

Each topology has its advantages and disadvantages. If one topology was the clear winner in all categories, then the others would have disappeared by now.

Would you care to elaborate on those differences for me? That was my intent for the "ill posed" query. I do understand the "horses for courses" philosophy.

  2. As a rank amateur to electronics I am baffled by the subject but interested. I've found that low cost doesn't necessarily mean low performance. That's true in my field as well however you must choose carefully.

So is a class D inherently inferior to class A? Or does it carry a stigma from past attempts being less than? I am surprised...no stunned at the amount of detail I was missing w/the old Fisher. it's so much easier to discern the various instruments and separate them in my head to listen. I had read that these inexpensive Chinese amps were surprisingly good deals for the money. Do the class A amps (Schiit Aegis?) actually sound that much better? if not what's the advantage of the other types of amps?

  3. My Fisher receiver recently went south and being the impatient sort I ordered a PA3s class d amp to tide me over 'til I can get around to fixing it. Damn. I am hearing things in music I've been listening to for decades never heard before. My speakers are entry level Klipsch but have stepped up to play very well with the Topping.

I'm sitting here listening to Carlos Santana's soaring guitar and percussion with a depth and clarity I thought I'd never be able to afford. Complex music is accessible to my aged and abused ears. I am more than impressed.

Honestly the speakers have impressed me as well. I have always enjoyed them but this is a whole new level. Now to get those Heresys...

  4. After seeing the results of my readings I tested the dB with my iPhone and the Niosh app. The tone at normal level reads 76 dB and loud reads 96 dB from my listening position. That sound right for 250MW?

I know it's not a calibrated measurement but it shouldn't be that far off.

Excellent thank you for contributing to the test.

Your maximum steady state power into 8 ohms is 250mW. You could easily get away with a flea watt amp as even 1 watt would be more than plenty for your tastes.

The test is showing so far that all of us are under 1 watt majority of the time, some well below 1 watt. The determining factor is your loudest of course because some times there is an occasion where you need to really get loud, parties or what have you and still we are seeing those reading be less than 20 watts, typically much less. For your case in particular you must not crank it up loud which is good, you'll keep your hearing. My maximum was a very rare occasion but still I needed to account for it because the once or twice a year where I fill the house with music for a party I still only require a 10 watt amplifier. It's clearly showing you do not need these 350wpc monster amps with efficient speakers.

Damn. Thought the readings were kinda low. It's a Topping PA3s I just got through a pair of Klipsch R-610f speakers. The normal was at 70-75 dB with a NIOSH app on the iPhone. Didn't bother to check the loud level 'cause the neighbor works swing shift and I think he's on graveyard this week.

The numbers surprise me. It's not like I listen at low volumes intentionally just where I can discern the different sounds. I do like it loud sometimes but try to be a good neighbor.

  6. Yes it's the Chesky version and that's the only one as far as I know. One of my favorites for listening when a change is made. From what I read they used a single mic. No matter it's a great album.

To answer your question, no I don't think you need. Your speakers go pretty low as is. Do you feel you're missing something.

Of course,  I use La Scala's and I don't need/want a sub, so maybe I'm not the right person to ask.

Size room, how loud you listen, your gear, and speaker placement are things I would consider first before a sub.

Room is an oddball about 12'X15' with furniture paneled walls hardwood floors and a big open space on the left into the dining room.  I sit here listening to Little Feat's Dixie Chicken and the bass is clean clear and snappy. Earlier was listening to Macy Gray's Stripped which was recorded in a church in Brooklyn NY with a single microphone. Both string and electric bass. Very clean and spacious. Thanks for that I think you may be correct.

Even though the speakers are entry level they're still Klipsch and it shows when I listen to a good recording. After getting the class d amp I spent some time with a set up record redoing speaker location yesterday and this morning. It did change a bit from where it was.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. By all means speak up if you've something to say on the matter. My mind's never really made up if ya know what I mean.

  8. Sub do I need? Don't care for bloated muddy thumping bass. Listen to everything 'cept rap/hiphop,pop and country. Mostly vintage rock and jazz. System is as follows/Topping PA3s/Schiit Modi 3+/Fluance RT-80/Klipsch R620f. no experience with subs and don't want to spend a lot to find out what I have is good for me. Was looking at a Monoprice 12 inch 150 watt sub. Thing is the specs say it goes to 50Hz and the 610 to 45 Hz. Does this matter? I'd appreciate any clarification. Thanks.
