  1. If you heard Bruf being interviewed, you would hear him talking about how as a kid, he listened to guys like Joe Morello (sp?), drummer for Dave Brubeck. He talks about Earthworks and jazz as a return to his roots. Hard to believe watching him play with KC, eh? His earlier Earthworks days had more electronic equipment, like hitting a pad and a chord would play...very creative stuff. His music will definately take you places musically. Go back even further if you like kindof a jazz-rock-fusion mix where he plays with Jeff Berlin (a very hot bass player), Dave Stewart (hot keyboard player). Check out One of a Kind, or Gradually Going Tornado on that link I gave. That's another flavor of Bruf. One of the best prog albums was UK. Saddly, there was only one with Bruf and Holdsworth, though the other UK album, Danger Money is also quite good, but the absence of Holdsworth is evident. Bozzio was quite good there. Happy listening!
  2. Hey Richard, just go to http://www.billbruford.com/bill/audio.html and sample more than just one album, well, parts of albums anyway...
  3. Hi All! Yes, I still pop in occasionally, though at this time of year I am busy with a CD compilation project. I did have some news to report. We just moved into a house , a real house, after 12 years or so in a condominimum, where my poor horns were choked. Well, this house has more space and the KHorns can now breathe, and breathe they do!! What a difference!!! It's funny that they are still 21' apart, but the cieling slopes and the room itself is bigger (will measure later). But dang, it sure sounds great!!! Some of you might remember that I complained of noise in my Scott 222D (a buzzing mostly in the right channel), that has greatly diminished. I can hear it only in that right channel if I put my ear to it, so the wiring in this house is also better! But right now, I better get back to unpacking before my wifey gets home and does something terrible to something precious of mine[]
  4. Hi Erik and all! I love ANYTHING that da Bruf has touched musically. Not that this has much of Bruf in it, only a little bit on one cut, but if you like female vox, check out Voices of life. It was produced by Eddie Jobson. It's all choir music sung by the Bulgarian Women's Choir. My fav two cuts are Utopia (not to be confused with Utopian Heights, a tune I wrote, hehe) which features the choir with Tony Levin's Stick playing aand Jobson on electric violin, and Zavesata Pada, also by Jobson with a haunting refrain-beuatiful, especially on the Horns! The rest is mainly Bulgarian Classical music. http://www.bulgarianwomenschoir.com/ edit: The above link seems to end, try this http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Voices%20of%20Life:1921477711;_ylt=AiY2AM3PY41veI3SRvZmc.VUvQcF;_ylu=X3oDMTBzZTVhM3RqBF9zAzk1OTUxMTEzBGx0AzQEc2VjA2FydHByb2Q-
  5. Hey guys, Record stores were mentioned here and I found one in Newport Beach that has a ton of records. I know that's a drive for you guys, but here it is. Price ranges from about $2 to audiophile for around $30, though he usually has a 30% off sale posted. I've bought stuff there in the $5-$15 range and was surprized to find the condition is quite good. The advantage is that you can actually look at what you are about to buy. Allan, I don't know if he has the collector stuff you are usually after, but give me a small list and I can check it out next trip. The name is Goat Hill Records and I believe the address is Costa Mesa, but I will n eed to look that up to verify. Email me if interested... kubickiandy@adelphia.net
  6. Is this something acoustic treatments (panels, bass traps etc) could remedy? If your KHorns don't sound right, perhaps you should consider moving to a house with a better room? I would sooner move than loose my KHorns .
  7. Can I catch the CTA from the West Coast and make it there?
  8. Since Tower of Power was mentioned in the shake a leg dept, I will add Ebony Jam off the Drop it in the Slot LP. There is just something irresistable about that funky tune! But I think it's out of print. In the shed a tear dept, I nominate the Telarc recording of Stravinsky's Firebird...
  9. I ordered the Spin Clean and got it this past week. I started cleaning some of my vinyl and what a difference!!!! Some of my records really surprized me! Thanks Wayne for showing this to us! Thanks for the lint-free towels (I got my own pack too). They work much better than the ones included with the Spin CLean...
  10. Let me post Jim's words here from our listening session where we had the Peach and VRDs and swapped in a good SS preamp: I have been a Solid State type all of my life, not necessarily by preference, I just never had the opportunity to try tubes. The marriage of tubes to horns is a very sweet pairing indeed. Absent is any hint of harshness or forwardness in the mids and highs. I love the K77 but SS amps in my experience do leave a livable crispness that can be a little to forward on certain selections. The Peach and VRDs were up and running when Andy played the Stravinsky Firebird piece. What a breathtaking, completely enveloping, lift you up and sit you right back down experience that was. Next we swapped in a solid-state preamp of Andys, while it sounded good it was immediately evident that your sonic signature is definitely founded in your preamp. The SS preamp sounded a little smaller and compact, the sound stage was more or less reduced. The Audire is a great preamp http://www.audire.com/prod01.htm , but it did pale in comparison to the Peach. I would like to hear it mated to an Audire amp someday, just to see if the mating with the tubed amp was bad synergy...
  11. Its funny...I got used to no tone controls on my Audire preamp. When I got the Scott, I pretty much leave the bass and treble flat or just a sleight adjustment. there is only one recording I have that was recorded extremely thin, and even then I don't touch the tone...

Bob Katz is among the best engineers and many of his articles on that site are interesting. They seem to explain how digital recordings can be made so poorly that they send us back to vinyl...

  14. What do your own ears tell you? Although I got the ALKs and have been very happy with them, I don't know how the newer crossovers are and if the improvement would be similar or nonexistant. But there are cheap mods you can do, like dampening the horns...why not start there?
  15. So, there really is a Joe Schmoe! Joe, there are some dual layered disks, SACD and Redbook (regular music CD). Without an SACD player, you are listening to the regular CD version. But keep in mind, it must be marked as a Hybrid CD...many are not hybrid and will not play in a CD player...
  16. LOL! We never noticed because I already have them Dynamatted and rope caulked...
  17. Yes, Tiger was indeed in there throughout Stravinsky's performance! We switched taps after Wayne noticed his Blues CD sounded a bit dark. Tiger is a shy cat, and I think the fear of all these humans was greater than the fear of noise. Once I opened up his safe area, he scrambled up the stairs post haste, as you all saw. He's back to his cheerful self now. Bonkers (the black cat) did come down as he is the social one. Socks was hiding under the bed upstairs figuring she'll let Bonkers do the socializing for all 3.

  20. Average person with building skills!!?? Yeah Right! That's fine work! Very fine work! Now send them into the corners so you can REALLY hear whar you're hearing!

Nick, It did have to happen afterwards or right at the end, and it was not a blow x-over, just the fuse, thank God!
  22. Interesting Gary, Another good one would be the vinyl version of Yes' Fragile with the CD and then the DVDa... In that case, because the DVDa is a remix, and the CD and vinyl were mixed with tons of distortion, the DVDa would most likely win...Darn, we could have done that had I thought of it! Also I forgot to play Yes-Acoustic DVD I had rented...what a DVD! Wayne, that last DVD was Bela Fleck and the Flecktones http://www.flecktones.com/cds.asp?cdID=14
  23. Right! It took me a full song to notice the balance was way off...Maybe the fuze was just brave...hung in there despite all the current it took and when the performance was over, like an old soldier, it just faded away! After you guys left I toned it WAY down with that Yo Yo Ma DVD, and I was in the kitchen, so not in front of the horns. Well, new fuze in place and the bass is balanced again! But it is a funny thought that we may have been listening that way...NOT! Someone would have noticed!
  24. This is unbelievable! I was just listening to my recently re-cleaned record and noticed that the bass was very much more balanced to the right. Now, there can be a small difference as the left corner is not a tight corner, but when I panned all the way left, all the bass was gone! I have no idea when, but we blew the fuse on the x-over! I wonder if we listened to it that way for some time...
  25. Jim, I was surprized at his immediate reaction to the ALKs. I've had mine for a while now and have gotten used to them, but I remember the day I put them in and how wonderfully detailed everything sounded. That was a major upgrade for me, right up there with switching to tubes and Wayne's Spin Clean for records! Jim writes: We seemed to settle the question of Redbook CDs vs. SACDs when we A/Bd Dave Brubecks Time Out in both formats. The clear winner was eth SACD, Toms Sony did justice all the way around. Nicks Classe sat up and sang for us as well Let's not forget that when we played the SACD and Redbook version of Celine's All the Way, the difference was more subtle, which says that the Brubeck SACD must have been remastered as well. Now that can also be a tribute to Sony's Redbook recording and mastering of this CD, for it to sound fairly close to the SACD version shows that though Redbook is limmited, it can get close when done right. Wayne opines: This hobby is indeed a solitary one. If one is lucky, as Andy and Jim are, you have a wife (or husband (if you are a lady reading this)) that is into music as much as you are and you can share the experience. Alas, my wife is happy with noise of any sort and REALLY doesnt hear the difference between my audio setup and the cheep $2.00 speakers that came with her computer she says the only difference she hears is that I play my music too loud! She would not even be a good candidate for Blose speakers, she doesnt hear the difference anyway! Ah well, she DOES allow me to chase the moving target of great sounding audio without much comment or complaint so even though she doesnt share in the sound, I am blessed. My wife is not into the hobby nearly as much as I am, but we do share a love and passion for music, though not the same music ...
