  1. Maybe you would be interested in this: I have an Acurus 75w per channel solid state amp purchased in mid 90s and a Transcendent grounded grid tube pre-amp. I lost both channels at once into a haze of static then silence. I suspected the power supply on one or the other but they checked out ok. I called Acurus to get a price on repair, they have a flat-rate of $250 to refurbish the amplifier plus shipping. It could probably use capacitor refresh .

The pre-amp can probably be checked out in a local shop since it's a fairly  simple 3 tube circuit. The filaments are glowing on all three tubes, it could be something as simple as the driver tube.

If you want to pay for shipping they are yours. The amp weighs about 50ibs.

You can get more info on the preamp on this forum: https://tubehifi.websitetoolbox.com/search search on grounded grid.

I have enough projects on my list, If I can get rid of these thats two less.

When Edmund G. Brown (Jerry Brown's father) was governor of California, in the early '60s, they issued an advisory to the DMV that most cars were unsuitable after 60,000 miles.  Mechanics kept some going to beyond 100K, though.

A friend of mine drove around with a hole in the floorboard of his car, you could see the road speeding by through the floor.  Of course, he had one door tied closed with a rope.  A cloud of bright white/gray smoke &/or steam would shoot out of his car's exhaust pipe when he started up.

Had a number of $100 cars back then, one that comes to mind is a 1966 International pickup truck. Both floor pans were completely rusted out and replaced with plate steel. The points at which the door hinges were bolted also rusted on the passenger side also rusted out and the door fell off. I had a buddy weld the door closed. That cost me an extra $20 each year to bribe the inspection technician to pass  safety. Aside from the rust issues that was a good quality truck, Lasted several years.

Another car I had was a dodge challenger, I drove it for 6 months and the rear leaf springs went through the trunk. I  lifted the car and put a 4x4 piece of lumber between the springs and body. Good to go. I filled the engine weekly with used oil from a local gas station. A great thing about $100 cars was you could always get $50 for scrap towards your next one.

Cool it man...it is all good. No one, or not I would blame you for posting this topic.

It is a function of economics beyond our control. More than one factor goes into this.

    Thanks!

  4. Joe -  I am needing to upgrade the crossovers in my Khorns and would like to ask what makes you want a pair of VTK-400s vs ALKs crossovers? I am on the fence between Voltis and ALK's gentle slope crossovers.

I bought the mid-range horn from Greg and am also planning to buy the BMS 4592ND Mid.

    Thanks,

`How the hell would you know ?  I would pit this amps sound against anything 1K and below......................Its not a beauty queen but it sure sounds beautiful. Which is what audio is supposed to be about !!!!!!!!

Humor me! I was referring to the nuts and bolts on your amp . I am working on a 300B OTL amp for my Khorns. I've run into two problems. I seem to be out of space in the chassis for the big caps in the bridge rectifier circuit and I've developed hand tremors which makes soldering difficult. Four 300B tubes per channel  will produce 1.5 watts which should be adequate for Khorns. DC filaments will eliminate any hum from the tubes. Three cabinets, one for toroidal coils and one per channel.

I have a lot of bad information too, which is why roy calls me 50cent.

I have never heard anyone straight up poo poo that driver. It’s actually quite good. What network were you running with it?

The Crites B&K A/4500hz. I initially suspected that the network was not compatible but Al told me that the DE120 and the CP25s were interchangeable. The reason I wanted to change the tweeter is because on my invoice from Crites the tweeter was listed as a CT125. I called over there and was told that they were out of CT120s. When I reinstalled the tweeter I got from Crites I read the fine print on the driver and discovered that they were DE120s. So the tweeters are now mounted on a motorboard for a CP25 with a 1/4" piece of plywood reducing the opening. I am going to replace the plastic horns with a pair of DaveA's SMAHL V2.
