  1. Do they use alot of power? Do they get hot? And how exactly do they work? something like power goes in power gets filtered power goes back Thanks for your input, this looks like a very good option that I will probably get. If I go with this option I would still like to have some sort of surge protection. Does anyone know an affordable surge protector, that sounds good?
  2. This started out as a reply to the decware opinions, but grew into a new post. Man those amps are sweet looking craig. Can't afford that yet... Bet they would rock with a blueberry Speaking of the Dec 685 cd player,I just bought one. I have a mapletree ultra 4a preamp. Later this week I will be doing some in depth listening. This being my first tube system, I won't be able to give an accurate response to how good it sounds, because the only system I've ever heard is mine. I read that they do sound better than the stock ah tjube. But if you mod out the ah with upsampler it will win. I wanted the dec unit cause its a 5 disc dvd/mp3 player. It also plays sacds, which is the main reason I prefer it to the ah. If I happen to get a better cd player, I can retire this one to another use. Its very versatile. The cd player is able to be hooked up to a tv, you can turn on different dac voicings sharp or a relaxed option. There is an attenuation feature. Lots of different stuff, fun to play with for sure This is all built into the standard sony cd player. The only problem I had was it was over driving my preamp. The output on it is very loud. apparently I'm the only one who ever had this problem. I shipped it back to him and he checked it out for me. Said nothing was wrong and recommended I get part # 27-4045 at mcminone.com it is a rca line level reducer, I got the 3db one and a 1db one. 3 turned out to be way too much. the 1db was just right and now theres some good sounding tunes coming out! I don't know how good the quailty of those rca reducers are. If anyone knows of an autophile level reducer, let me know Just so I can make sure I'm getting the best sound. I wish someone who had heard lots of systems, could come listen to mine and tell me how it stacked up. If anyone is ever around sulphur/lake charles, la. You'll have to drop by We need a get together in the south!
  3. holy cow. VRDs are mono blocks, right? how much for 2 of them? do they have volume or would you need a preamp.
  4. Decware? Does any one here have any of their amps? What do you think about them? And how do you think about Model SE84CSM monoblocks? http://www.decware.com/Selectmono/select.htm How would they stand up to a VRD? or whatever the amp is that craig loves
  5. but to answer your question most ads are just normal pictures. some of them are flash, and I'm sure you have that installed.
  6. This will block most of them http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html it creates entries in your host file that don't allow your computer to connect to various advertisement pages. I use that in conjunction with firefox browser. Which has good popup blocking and some ad-blocking installed by default. It's also safer to use than Internet Explorer since it won't let activex install all sorts of random spyware on your system. It has tabs too, so you can have like 10 websites open and only take up one space on your task bar. For fun you can use spywareblaster, it prevents adware from getting installed on your computer in the same way norton prevents viruses from getting on. I use adware and spybot in conjunction with each other for spyware removal and if your antivirus is expired and your too cheap to buy a new one use AVG... they have a free version, which isn't as user friendly as norton, but seems to detect more viruses. and you don't have to waste 50 bucks on it each year.
  7. I wish they were more specific than 40-80db... and tell me what ranges those are over. panamax 5100 = 50 db and Furman PL Plus DM is from 40-60db the panamax isn't a rack mount (plus for me) and has coax \ telephone and all sorts of extras. there alot of difference between 40 and 80 db!
  8. I see the difference now between rf filters / line conditioners. Man do I have lots of toys to buy Found a good Furman FAQ saying what I need the most. http://www.furmansound.com/faqpower1.htm I see they have many different amp ratings, from around 10 - 20 amps. What is a good guess for a dynaco st-70 ( 35 watts X 2), preamp, cd player, record player
  9. What line conditioners if any do you use? I've seen alot of panamaxs in signatures. Do they make a difference?
  10. I have an st-70 that craig modded (with the cuccio board), I'm waiting for my good cd player to come in (a dec-685). I've been using a pawn shop sony cd player in the mean time I know the source & speakers make the biggest difference, but his st-70 is top notch!
  11. try going to start, programs, accessories, entertainment. open the volume control. Try adjusting the wav and main volume sliders to both around half. That should do it. But still turn off eqs, etc. For my computer I bought an external d/a converter for around 120 bucks. hooks up to usb and acts like a sound card and got rid of my ground hum. I think i found it at thinkgeek.com
  12. So would it be better to build a subwoofer box out of 3/4 mdf or 3/4 plywood. Sorry for semi OT.
  13. if only someone lived close to me, we could both order them... use the trial periods to compare! (I live in louisiana, Hint, hint)
  14. hope I can get it working right!. Sure I'll let everyone know how it stacks up. Not that I have a big base of comparison besides my old sony 5 disc Anyone here know about the difference between an E88CC and 12AU7 tube?
  15. Talked to the steve at decware. I told him the line input specs for my mapletree ultra. He said that the cd player voltage / impedence shouldn't be a problem. He's sending me a 12AU7. I'll let you know how it works and tell you guys how it does once I get it burned in.
  16. Just got in my decware 685. http://www.decware.com/SACD/sacd.htm It's stock outputs are 2v, which sound fine. It's high quality outputs are 3.5v which distort. book says 'this is a high impedance output meaning you don't want to use passive volume controls unless they are 100k ohms' my preamp is a mapletree ultra 4a that nosValves modded. I've been over the wire diagrams, which don't mean much to me. I saw 100k ohms on there somewhere it seems. Is 3.5v input to the mapletree too much? The tube that it came with is a 'JJ Electronic' E88CC tube. It uses a dual triode (12AU7) and may be rolled with 12AT7 and 12AX7 tubes as well. Not sure what an AT7 is, but I know AU7 has lower gain than an AX7, so i need to stay way from the AX! I'm not sure what an E88CC is... maybe they dropped the wrong tube in the box. THANKS!
  17. Room treatment is my next adventure. I just bought the decware modded sony sacd player. SHould be coming in this week. Just bought a house too. In a few months, once my money settles down, I'm planning on doing some room treatment. This is my first house and the stereo will be in the living room. So I'm not too sure how crazy I can go with the panels I will get something up. Gotta get a fridge and stuff first!
  18. http://www.audioadvisor.com/store/productdetail.asp?sku=AQSORS&product_name=Sorbothane%20Tile%20Sheet Wherever an isolation foot doesn't make sense - such as to dampen the top plate of components from vibrations - choose one of these tacky adhesive-backed energy absorbing sheets. Easy to install! What do you guys think? Good or Gimmick?
  19. Try using cdex for a comparison it's an opensource cd ripper. Got LOTS of quality options! Use the Lame encoder (you can use like 15 different encoders here, but lame is the best for speed/quality) mpeg 1 with max bitrate 320.. (unless you want to keep it at the same for apples to apples comparison) put the quality to 0 (very high quality) and check on the fly mp3 encoding. i would think leave output sample rate at 44100 since that's what the cd is at.. no sence letting computer up sample (besides i've had that give me a weird sound) it can be had here. http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/ I would think this should beat media player. Since I think their empahsis would be more on speed than optimum performance, so the user doesn't get tired of waiting. Naturally, this is what I think, based on prior use of other microsoft products. I think its definetly worth a shot.
  20. How do you think these would compare to radio shack fusions? Thanks guys!
  21. You may want to look at this max. http://flac.sourceforge.net/ It's called flac.. its a lossless encoding method. so your file will be the same as the original cd. The files are larger though (around ~250mb per cd)
  22. Isn't it better to have the brass cones under the cd player, draining it's internal vibrations into the wooden block? and then have the wooden block isolated?
  23. anyone know of a good cd I can pickup with classical/spanish guitar. I have some paco de Lucia. He is a great guitarist, but he plays too fast, i want some good sounding smooth nylon guitar action. I have acoustic alchemy and la vienta already.. I like both of those alot. Sacd if favored to normal cd. Thanks!
  24. What is a masonite panel? (artto) and where would be the best place for a bass trap. Top, listening level or cieling of a corner? Thanks! Those roominator alpha looks nice, that's probably what I will get!
