  1. Yes is my favorite band, and 70 was the year I was born.
  2. I'm very happy with my player. I bought the DVD-2200 about a month ago. Very solid performing player. If I have to be "nitpicky", then the only thing I don't like about this player is: 1) fixed 80Hz crossover in the bass management. 2) no back lit keys on the remote (They do glow in the dark) 3) No button on the remote to shut off video feed to the TV (it is on the front panel display) 4) no "SACD setup" button on the remote to switch between the 5.1, stereo, and CD tracks of SACDs (it is on the front panel display also). Like I said, that's being very, very picky. #2 is really not a biggie if you use a universal remote like I do. To me, this player is well worth its weight in gold, and I don't regret getting it. A must have even if you just want something for DVD-A, and SACD.
  3. You can play DVD-As on a standard DVD player, but you will be limited to the Dolby Digital and DTS tracks. To hear the Meridian Lossless Packing (or MLP tracks), you would need a DVD-A capable player. As mentioned before too, You would need 6 analog cables (for the 5.1 channels) and a receiver or pre/pro with a 5.1 input.
  4. I also own KG5.5s and I most say (so far) my front pair have held up very well. I bought them new back in 94. Recently, I purchased two more pairs (used) for a future 7.1 setup. The third pair, for now, is in my bedroom hooked up to a second system. With 5.1 music like DVD-A and SACD, it was a night and day difference between them and my older Yamahas I used as surrounds. About the only mod I have done to mine was to add a bit more damping material to the insides. I did notice a bit more "oomph" in the low end, but I was more surprised with how much better the midrange and lower treble sounded. I have thought about adding 12awg wire to the insides, but I'm not really confident with my soldering skills.
  5. STL, You have mail. I sent you a PM.
  6. One more question, Could I get away with using one port the same size as the stock. Is there any issues of port noise from using smaller ports. If I could use the same size port as the stock one, where would you put it? Also, there is the question of veneer. If I go this far in having a custom center made, would you get it with the same medium oak veener as the ones I currently have? How hard is this? I wouldn't mind for it to look like Klipsch made the speaker themselves. That "factory look" if you'll pardon the expression. LOL. Thanks again STL.
  7. Oh, I don't doubt that. I'm sure Pioneer would advise against it too. Even if it could, which I think it could, the wheels that allow you to move it around were probably design for its weight alone. The KGs weigh about 70lbs a piece if I can remember. That would be a pretty heavy center speaker. That and the 300+ lbs of TV would be quite a load on the wheels. The KGs do use a pretty big port. I'm wondering if two smaller ports would be better. Maybe one between the horn and each of the woofers. When you're looking at it from left to right you would see woofer, port, horn, port, woofer. Sound good?
  8. I appreciate the advice STL. Thank you. I didn't know both woofers were active. I always thought one was a passive radiator. The specs don't say one way or another. That should make this project a lot easier. So, I'm guessing, as long as the cabinet is the same size as the KG's, I should have nothing to worry about? Good. The only thing I would think would be different between a KG5.5 and my center version, is the position of the horn. I want it to be centered between the woofers. Also, one more thing. Where would you put the port? I have a 60" Pioneer Elite. Pretty sturdy cabinet. Wood cabinet, no plastic at all. I'm not one to take chances, so I'll keep the TV tip in mind. Again thanks for the help.
  9. Nice job! That looks pretty cool! My problem is, I'm not too gifted when it comes to wood work. From my point of view, would you say I'm better off just getting a center like the Academy or a KLF-C7? Have you heard those with a pair of KG5.5s? I have the KV-2, and it pretty much stinks compared to my KGs. I have also seen a KV-4 on Audiogon, but I haven't heard any of these speakers. I would hate to buy one, and then find out the timbre-matching isn't any better than what I already have. I have thought about having an enclosure built for me, and just switch out the drivers from a spare KG. The crossover is what I'm worried about. I'm sure in a center speaker, both woofers are active, instead of one of them being passive. Right? Also, would my proposed KG5.5 center be too heavy for my Pioneer Elite TV. If I go this route, I want to keep the woofers the same size. I plan on building my system more around surround formats like SACD and DVD-A. I'm not worried about trying to buy a single speaker. I plan on owning a front projection system sooner or later. When that time comes around, I'll just switch out the custom center with the spare KG5.5. Thanks for any suggestions.
  10. I don't have 5.1 capability on my system as far as DVD-A and SACD goes. I do think the CD layer sounded better than the original remaster. For some reason, my DVD player wouldn't play it though. Thought I would mention that. I have read some other members on another forum had some of the same problems. I take it has to do with maybe older DVD players. Mine is the Pioneer DV-525. No problmes on my other players though. Wished I could tell you more.
  11. I agree with Fish. Denon and Klipsch go very well together. I have a Denon AVR-3600 driving a pair of Klipsch KG5.5 speakers. As far as surrounds go, I would rather have as close to matching speakers all around as I could. Maybe look into another pair of RF-5s if your budget/living space permits. This would be ideal if you look into getting into multi-channel formats like DVD-Audio and/or SACD. I wouldn't go lower than 16 gauge cable for speaker wire. I use 12 gauge in my system. I use Radioshacks flatwire for the surrounds. It is a bit tricky to strip due to its flat design, but I like the idea of not having any "humps" in my floor rugs. For sub cables, I have a couple of friends that have had great results using RG-6 (like for DirecTV and/or Dish Network) cable using RCA adapters. Hope this helps, and good luck.
  12. I agree. I have a Denon AVR-3600, and for listening to 2 channel music, I don't use any of the DSP modes. I either listen to it in the Direct mode (2 ch no sub) or the Stereo mode (2 ch with sub). I don't even use the tone controls.
  13. I would try Ebay or Audiogon. Depending on how much it is used, you may be better off just getting another receiver and using your current one for a second system. I know some of the older Denons (3802, 3801, 3800, etc.) can be pretty cheap depending on how old of a receiver it is. I have seen mine (Denon AVR-3600) go for about $200-$300. It retailed for about $1800 brand new. Here is the link for Audiogon: http://www.audiogon.com Hope this helps.
  14. I forgot to mention. I'm currently using a KV-2 center, which I think doesn't match in tone, due to the different tweeter. Thanks again.
  15. Hello all, First, I appreciate those who helped me out a while back with some of my speaker upgrade questions. Thank you. I came across someone who is selling a pair of KG5.5 that have the same finish as my current pair. I feel, I can't let this pass by. Should this sale go through, what would be the best matching center for my KG5.5? I have looked at the following: Klipsch Academy Klipsch KLF-C7 Or use another KG5.5 in a custom made center speaker enclosure, if it can be done cheaply. This would mean buying another pair of KG5.5s, but I plan on having a front projection display in the future. I would be able to use the single KG to have matching speakers all around, when I get to this point. A big plus for multi-channel surround like SACD and DVD-A. Which would you do? Again, thanks to those who have helped me in the past. I hope I can get those KGs!! Wish me luck.
  16. WDST surrounds? Keith, are you refering to the RS-7s? If so, no, I don't plan on getting them. What I would like is the RB-5IIs for surround duty. I can't afford another pair of RF-7s for surrounds to match the fronts (though I would like to be able to). Even the lesser priced RF-5 ($1500/pr) seems slightly out of my league. I figure for that price I could get two pairs of RB-5II for surround speakers. That way I would have matching (sonically speaking) surrounds for DD-EX and DTS-ES, plus still have a better match for the fronts for 5.1 music. I figured direct radiators will be better for music as compared to the RS-7s. I run my current setup as large. All the low frequencies below 65Hz run to my sub, and the KGs get everything above. I have played around with different setting and this seems to be the setting I like the best. Cluless. I know EXACTLY what you mean. What's worse is buying something, then about a month later you find out a newer better model came out that you wished you would have waited for (i.e: computers). Thanks again for the replies.
  17. Mr. McGoo, I was considering that myself. To look around the first of the year for a better deal. I was suprised to find that Tweeter has a pair of KLF-10. They look identical to my KG5.5, but I felt they didn't have the clarity/performance to them as my KGs. My KGs were a lot closer to the RFs sound than to the KLFs. That really suprised me. I was thinking of getting the center and surrounds first, then maybe look at getting the RF-7 later on. The only thing I worry about is if I wait too late and the RF-7s become discontinued, much like the KLF-30. I'm gambling that since this speaker isn't two years old yet, that I should have nothing to worry about. Of course, if I can get a deal on everything, I'll go for that first. I'm not one to pass up a good deal! Thanks again, and others, for your help.
  18. I went to my local Tweeter store and gave the RF-7s a listen. They even have a pair of KLF-10s which look EXACTLY like my KG5.5s. I was quite suprised with the difference in sound between the KLF-10s and the RF-7s. The KLF wasn't a bad sounding speaker at all, but IMO, The RF-7s pretty much put it to shame, at least to my ears. The RF-7s are pricy, but I know I would keep them for a long time which makes me believe it would be a better investment over the long run as compared to buying a newer receiver (I've owned my KGs for almost 9 years now). I even listened to some of the bookshelves (RB-3) they had and liked them better than the KLF-10s. Paired with the RSW-10, the RB-3s sounded even better. I've been thinking if it would be wise to just go with the surrounds (RB-5II) and center(RC-7) for now, then as time permits, add the RF-7s later. The Reference Series, at least the RF-7s, are about a year or two old and I'm hoping Klipsch will continue to still make these speakers available for a while. For the record, I was wrong about calling the RS-7s dipoles. They are not wired out of phase. Sorry for the mistake. Thanks for pointing that out to me. Any more suggestions are welcome. Thanks again for the help!
  19. Denon , that's what I have to use for awhile. It's rated at 100Wx5. Thanks. Justin
  20. Hello everyone. I currently have a pair of KG5.5 in my system for the mains, and a KV-2 center speaker. I had posted a similiar question before, but want to hear more opinions. I'm shooting for a multi-channel music based system, but will also have an extra pair in the back for EX/ES duties. So which would you like for a better upgrade choice: 1) Stay with the KG5.5s and get another pair, and find a matching center, KLF-C7 maybe. Good bookshelf match for the back surround channels? 2) a pair of KLF-30s (or the 20s) for the fronts, KLF-C7 for the center, and the KG5.5 I own now moved to the rears. Again, what good book shelf match for the back surround channel duty. 3) the Reference Series package with the RF-7 for fronts, RC-7 for center, and 4 RB-5II bookshelfs in place of the RS-7 dipoles. Of course the extra pair would be for EX/ES duties as the back surrounds. RF-7s would be great all around, but that will break my wallet. I have thought about the RF-3II floorstanders, but I don't think they are available in the medium cherry or blonde maple finishes that I like. Any thoughts. Thanks a lot for any replies, and to those that have helped me before.
  21. Thanks, I plan on doing that. What I would like to have, again dreaming, would be a FPTV with 5 identical Klipsch speakers, be it the KLF-30s or more KG5.5s. Maybe even powered by Sunfire amps, with their Theater Grand III. I read a review of that pre/pro and was pretty much impressed!
  22. Thanks Dean, I probably would be better to start with three new Heresys, but I have become attached to the KG5.5s in my almost ten years of owning them. Would I be better off trying to find another pair of them? I have read good things about the SVS subs. I might have to look into that as time/budget permits. I'll have to look at some of the Aragon gear too. What about Sunfire amps? I thought about scouting around for prices on some used Sunfires. I have read that B&K tend to be a little bright, and Klipsch are known to be a bright speaker. Just curious. Thank you for your replies.
  23. Hello everyone, I'm new to this site, but not to home theater. I've been in the hobby for close to 10 years now, and still can't seem to cure myself of the "upgrade bug". My system includes: Denon AVR 3600 A/V receiver frt speakers Klipsch KG5.5 center speaker Klipsch KV2 rear speakers Yamaha NS-A835 Def Tech PowerField 1500 sub (250W/15" woofer) My system use is 90%/10% for music/movies. What would some of you fellow Klipsch owners recommend for a better matching center? I'm looking to build my system around DVD-A and multi-channel SACD as time (and budget) allows. Some of the ideas I had were, if I went the used route: 1st option- A pair of KLF-30s for the fronts. KLF-C7 for the center Move the KG5.5s to the rear. Sub- ? maybe Def Tech's SuperCube One? 2nd option- another pair of KG5.5s for the rear, and the KLF-C7 for the center. Sub would be the same as mentioned above. If I ever wanted to add a power amp in the future, I have wonder about Sunfire. Would this be a good match for Klipsch speakers? I know I have to scout around the used shops and/or websites, so what are the best sites, and are my options good? I'm always open to better suggestions. Thanks. Yesfan70

Also, I was deciding between my current 14 and the RB-5 owner's manual recommendation of 16. Any more advice here is welcome. ---------------- I would stay at 14 AWG. The owner's manual recommendation is for minimum guage wire which is 16. If I changed anything, I would go to a bigger wire like 12AWG, but I think what you have will do. Hope this helps
