  1. ajgb72----Thanks.... Sure you could build a raw unfinished 3/4" MDF cabinet with wood glue, clamps and a brad nailer and forget any mitred corners/edges and just make sure you seal every corner and intersection so you don't get any vibration or worse yet air leaks. Many have built the same box but very UNfinished and raw MDF as a simple and cost effective way to evaluate the DIY subs. But watch out, once you start, this becomes an addiction and then after your first fix, you become a DIY Bass Junkie and will want more. Key things: 1) You can't cut accurate enough 2) Air leaks in a subwoofer are the equivalent of trying to blow up a balloon with a hole in it 3) Silicone adhesive is incredibly strong and very cheap 4) You can't cut accurate enough 5) Pre-drill any hole with a bit at least 1/2 the diameter of the fastener to be inserted 6) MDF is compressed sawdust and will split easy 7) Make all same dimension cuts at the same time, then move to the next dimension, don't randomly cut pieces or things will never match up 8) Use a good table saw or forget about all external cosmetics or ease of assembly 9) Your local lumber mill (NOT HD or Lowe's) can cut your MDF to your required plan sizes and for very cheap usually less around 0.50 to 1.00 per cut 10) Pre-drill all holes or the MDF will split Good luck For more info go to Hometheaterforum.com DIY and Advanced projects
  2. linstok, I am interested in the responses to this also as I have been running 2 subs for a long time and just added a third. Two are running from my AV units Sub out via Monster cable Y-splitter and then to the LFE in on both, the third is running from speaker level inputs. I think you will have better luck with this question if you post in the Home Theater section.
  3. Thanks guys----Well here is a quick summary of the materials and the costs associated with this sub: 1 1/2 sheets 3/4" MDF with Maple Veneer---No charge, estimated cost $75 Custom cabinet work per Adire Audio 214L Tempest plans on their website----$100 from friend----If he does another, he said around $300 for the cutting and assembly. Tempest 15" Driver from Adire Audio----$162 shipped to me 2- 3" flared ports from Parts Express-----$11 each, $22 total 250W plate amp from Parts Express (P/N 300-794)----$119 Miscellaneous Fasteners & Two tubes of silicone adhesive--------$10 64 oz. of Polyfill from Walmart---------$6 My cost for everything was around $419.......If I had to buy the MDF with veneer and pay for the actual custom cabinet cutting and assembly it would have cost me an additional $350. For a total worse case scenario of $769...... This is still far cheaper than any sub I've ever heard that performs like this. My advice is this.....Find a good pro furniture or cabinet builder and ask him to review the Adire plans and explain you want it to be airtight and look like a piece of furniture...My buddy mitred all of the corners and it was no big deal for someone who build cabinets or furniture he said. You can't see any seams on the outside of my sub where the four sides and top meet. My buddy tells me this should cost no more than $400 MAX. for pro caliber work.------Well worth it in my mind because appearance and WAF is critical for me! Good Luck!!
  4. Wow......I never thought I could do it (build it) let alone Adire put it up on their site, but it turned out beautiful and it performs even better!!!!!!!! This sub is simply amazing!!! Check out the link to Adire Audio below.......... http://www.adireaudio.com/diy_audio/gallery/tempest_territory.htm
  5. Z28- Thanks a lot, I appreciate the feedback. I really went the extra mile in making sure the finished sub looked as good as anything store bought....and it sure does. A valuable lesson I learned here was that it is much easier to do it right and thorough the first time then it is to go back and try and fix or improve something. I was so anxious to get this thing done and I am glad I took my time through the entire process. I watched MIB-II last night after the wife and kids went to bed and there is some very good LFE in this movie. Also watched Monsters Inc. with my kids and excellent LFE in there also. This sub is as good as anything I've heard and I just can't get over it's output and how low it can go. I run it at about 6 of 10 (1 o'clock) on the volume and have it crossed over at just over 40 Hz. Best $400 I have EVER spent!!
  6. pRODj- Are you still awake???!!! Now this is turning into a good thread!!!! I mention a one little comment about military history and we got a damn Civil War recreation on our hands. You've heard of A-Rod (Alex Rodriguez), well how about P-Rod! Please read carefully there will be a test to follow. Very interesting stuff. I really wonder what would have happened to Europe in WWII if the US stayed home and Nazi Germany were allowed to have its way with the rest of Europe? I wonder if the US had tons of war protestors back then? Gregorius- I thought it had some deeper meaning.....way to roll with it and be a good sport!
  7. HDBRbuilder- Awesome!!!..I love hearing military history buffs who know the good details. I won't pretend to be that knowledgable, just hungry for learning every chance I get regarding this type of stuff. It's amazing how just some friendly barbs can spur a very interesting (to some) discussion. Is there any websites or links you could share about the 509th that I could read up on??? Ranger- All in good fun, as if you didn't know.
  8. HDBR---- OK ALREADY, I GIVE UP!!!!!!!! It's not the 82nd or 101st airborne and not the infamous Easy Company.... Please for Prod's sake he may have an upcoming test on this and need this knowledge more than I....I am purely an armchair historian that loves to watch the history channel and Wings and other great military documentaries when not toying in my HT or building a DIY 214L Tempest Subwoofer. I promise I will address you by your formal "MR." HDBRbuilder screen name. Ranger, give it up before I have your screen name altered to Ranger Rick...
  9. Headbanger-------That's "Easy"..................... Easy Company, most people would know it as the Band of Brothers HBO story. Am I right???? HDBRbuilder, I hope you don't mind me nicknaming your screen name since HDBR could be short for HeaDBangeR, It's all in fun. Well, Am I right??!!! I am impressed with the level of detail/knowledge. I love it!!!!
  10. mkl- Thank you, as I thought I was the only one shortening his name to what I thought was only appropriate since named after the Techno band...... Audio? Who cares about audio, this thread is not only funny but educational as well, as I love American, World and Military history. This is like a cat with a ball of string......Go ahead Cluless! Thanks Headbanger for the Ranger history lesson
  11. Gregarious gets it!!!! Why don't you??? Notice I spelled his name wrong also as a subtle, yet simple way of asking for clarification....I have heard the word Gregarious but never gregorius....But he isn't getting all bent over it. He realizes its just a screen name. So as I asked you Prod, I ask Greg...Is it Greg and Orius as your last name or is it a subtle play on words/spelling to infer you are "gregarious". Prodigy- Your screen name is just plain confusing to me and makes me think of that one british dude/techno/electronic group that sings that song "Smack my B*tch up". As a ProDJ, you must know that tune. For clarification, before the females flame me, this song is about heroin addiction, not promoting violence towards females......Me, I love the ladies. Prodig is another version I just thought of and since I am on a roll if you don't like Cattle Prod, we can rearrange the letters in Prodig and call you Pigrod. By the way, yes I was state champion scrabble player.....Ok at least in my house. Wow, I think I drank too much Mountain Dew today.
  12. I have a pair of Klipsch Chorus II's that are in excellent cosmetic and working condition. They look brand new and are Black Satin. I refinished the cabinets to a Black Satin and re-finished the grille cloth as well. New traditional black grille cloth was used to replace original brown "burlap" that did not match the rest of my speakers. I reattached the original Klipsch logos and can honestly say these speakers look factory new and match my black KLF-C7 perfectly. Due to limited space reasons, I would like to trade for a pair of Klipsch KLF-30's, Black only. The Chorus II's are very wide and I have limited room on my stage for them and KLF-30's would be a better, narrower fit. Would consider cash offers for $1,000 and I will only work with people within driving distance of metro-Detroit (Mich.,Ohio,Idiana, Chicago-area). I will not ship these as they are they are around 90-100 lbs each and not worth the hassle/risk. I am a long-standing member at the Klipsch BB, HTforum and AVSforum. You can see the speakers at my HT link below and why KLF-30's would work better. E-mail me at bloomis914@aol.com with questions or offers. I can post/send pics or e-mail digital pics.
  13. Cluless- You have a great sense of humor.......I was thinking that prod's new Delta Tau Delta pledge name shall be CATTLE PROD! with Ranger's new Avatar proposal. Prod, you obviously don't come from a big family or have any brothers or sisters, because you wouldn't have made it this far. You know you are "loved" when people make fun of you directly...........It's when people no longer pay attention to anything you have to say that you should worry.

  16. Cattle Prod- Does pro dj101 imply you are a dj, but just a beginner due to the 101 suffix?? I am confused at the apparent oxymoron your name implies. If you are a pro then I would drop the 101 as it suggests amateur or 1st year college dj....But then again not sure what you were striving to achieve.. Prod, you really need to lighten up, its just a screen name and not even your real name. You remind me of my old college room mate that always begged for abuse no matter what the situation. Have you seen that scene in Stripes with Bill Murray when he says, "Lighten up Francis"......
  17. Ear, Thanks a lot for your input. Having the 214L Tempest now, should I even bother with a Tempest Sonotube or will it be a stepdown?
  18. prodj---- Thanks for stating the obvious, regarding the cost of the materials being used as a percentage of the overall costs. What other brilliant observations can you make about the business world. We all welcome your DIY limited edition speakers that will compete in both price, performance and build quality! Let us know when they are ready.
  19. Whoa!! DustinB, thanks for the response. I knew when I first pushed the thing that it was a heavy hitter but I don't have any reference points other than my KSW-15 which honestly doesn't even compare. I am pleased to hear that it is in good company. Does anyone have data of a SVS Ultra vs. Tempest 214L AA??? In regards to Frequency/SPL output. Thanks, guys.
  20. Prod- I appreciate you seeing my point of view. Hofy- Right on. Lynnm- Who are you referring to specifically? They may not even realize it unless pointed out.. HornEd---Your posts are always welcome as they provide a pragmatic insight and point of view that only experience can provide. The greatest gift we have here in the US is the fact that you can buy whatever brands you want and vote with your dollar as long as your not voting/buying Cuban cigars The fact is we are in a global economy and we just had our 10 year anniversary of NAFTA yesterday or today.
  21. Man, you guys are unbelievable......What's the difference where it is made???Maybe you should go and buy Bose.....Or some crap name mfg. in the USA. Malcom, you are right on. Have you guys been to Mexico....The reason the US is losing jobs to them is due to the fact that labor is cheaper, people will come to work everyday and not ***** and complain....As with many non-Americans work is considered to be an opportunity or privelege, not a right. Don't get me wrong I love made in the USA IF the product is priced right and performs, and we still have a kick-*** mfg. force. But let's be honest, US costs are spiraling out of control due to Unions, Health care and collective bargaining to list a few..... I buy american cars, but don't think for a minute that I wouldn't buy a BMW, Porsche, Ferrari or Lexus if I could afford it. It is about Value (cost vs. performance) right?? Kain, aren't you from the U.A.E.?? And you are whining about products made in Mexico???!!! I think we should have/add a new forum for "things non-related to Klipsch that I want to complain about" I guess that means we should all boycott the new Reference line based on any or all of it is assembled or Mfg'd in Mexico or wherever. This is ignorant and reeks of discrimination any way you cut it. The bottom line is again cost/performance = Value. Did I pour enough gas on this fire? I am tired of all the whining on the Klipsch boards by the vocal minority.
  22. Ear, I appreciate your positive comments as you own or compared more subs than I can think of!! I would like to build another one of these, not necessarily the Tempest though. Ear, what would be the next step up in performance without a huge hit in costs?? I have been reading about the Tumult and it sounds like its #'s aren't much different than the Tempest but it can handle more power, be built in a smaller enclosure and put up bigger SPL's provided larger amplification. I really want to build a Tempest Sonotube to experience the SVS concept and I think I could build this a lot faster and with less finish concerns. Just tube, driver, port, top and bottom endcaps with amp and legs. What commercial subs do you think my 214L Tempest is equal to from a performance standpoint??
  23. I just received the Holiday gift ideas e-mail and glad to see not only bumper stickers for $3.00 but T-shirts for $15.00. Both are very reasonably priced but Prodj will probably claim that they are overpriced and not a good value!! Good job Klipsch/board moderators for answering the forum members requests. P.S. Is it poor taste to buy yourself a T-shirt and some bumper stickers for a stocking stuffer!!! For some reason, my wife may not appreciate either if I say they are for her
  24. Prod, It is just you........I don 't think I have read a single post criticizing the cost/performance/value of SVS.....These guys are doing the average audiophile/bassheads a favor giving us a product that no other mfg./retail can touch. You really need to think more before speaking/posting. If it wasn't for SVS you could be buying less performance for more money and you would NEVER get to talk or have the chance to talk to the owners of the company. Your post by its very nature is very American and exercises your right to free speech. However, may I suggest to you that you do your self a dis-service by making ignorant statements before doing your homework. Those two guys (Tom and Ron) are probably the smartest guys around as far as their business model goes. They have chosen to actively participate in the peer group (by virtue of their lurking in all of the forums/BB's) that loves their product as much as they do. They speak/write based on facts/data and are always going the extra mile for the customer. And BTW, guess what, I don't even own an SVS!!!!!!!!YET! I would love to have a pair of SVS Ultra's though. I actually just built my own DIY Tempest and I can't believe the amount of work required to build your own sub and it still cost me around $400 in materials. I would discourage you from starting your own business since you haven't learned rule #1 about sales and that is don't breathe a word about your competitors products....Focus on your products merits and give your customer some respect to make an informed decision.
