  1. Please pardon my intrusion but you guys are all over what I'm trying to accomplish. A friend and I split a pair of 1981 AA LaScalas to use as a center, there is no way I can use the full cabinet in the center position, the intentions are to use the HF guts in a custom cabinet with dual 8" woofers. I can understand some of the issues that are associated with the designs but most of what I read might as well be Greek. I can't begin to understand the technical aspects of your conversations but enjoy the knowledge I am exposed to. If I may, my questions are simple. Does there need to be any changes to the crossover to run 2 woofers? Which woofers are the best match? Magnetic shielding is not a problem, it will sit on top of an RPTV where I currently have a Heresy. I know there is a lot that goes into answering these question but I need it simplified such as, you can do this, or, you can't do that. Not trying to hijack the thread but you are the ones that can help me. Thanks for any input. Jack.
  2. Ok here I go again feeling stupid. What's the no-seeums cause I haven't seenum. I've been in Charleston all my life and that's the first time I have heard that term. I'm sure when you tell me the DUH thing will happen. I work for the City of Charleston F.D. I do know the MT. pleasant fire chief. MT. Pleasant has a pretty tight community and with their growth rate going thru the roof, they are probably being very strict about codes and enforcement, just to keep a handle on it. If you need additional info, pm me and I can get you names and numbers, you may even know the chief as he grew up on Johns Island. Jack.
  3. Sorry for not getting back sooner, long days at work. No I didn't get them, my own stupid fault. A friend of mine told me about klipsch speakers in the paper, I asked what was the description, he said " I don't remember it was some letters and numbers", I didn't bother to look any further, I was interested in heritage, especially a heresy for the center. Well another friend of mine (who I introduced to klipsch and now has Lascalas and is looking to split a pair of heresies) called me and told me about the klf-20's in the paper, he asked if I new anything about them. Here is where it gets STUPID. I said "I think they are something like a synergy series or an entry level speaker, I was online at the time and said "hold on let me take a look at the klipsch site". Well after reading, I immediatly felt stupid, so I get on the forum and ask if it's a fair price, after reading I am now scrambling to get in touch with the seller, finally I get him and he tells me they are sold. I feel the energy leave my body as I slump in the chair gazeing at my computer with the phone barely hanging in my hand as it slowly swings just inches above the floor
  4. There are 2 pair for sale localy by the same original owner in excellent condition, 1 pair oak and 1 pair black. He wants $450 a pair or $800 for both. I have never listened to them and don't hear about them often. Any and all opinions are very much needed. I have been saving for a center channel heresy, is this a good enough deal to get derailed. Thanks, Jack.
  5. Is there a place to run the serial numbers on Klipsch speakers and obtain all the info that the numbers and letters represent. Thanks.
  6. I am going to use a heresy for the center channel, I was wondering from some of you who may have tried comparing, which heresy is a better match. Thanks Jack.
  7. Thanks for all your opinions, as for this noise that the direct drive motor produces, are we talking tolerable, highly noticable, only noticable when no music is playing and the table is spinning, or can you hear it from 10 feet away, 2 feet away? Does the noise come through the needle when no music is playing? The reason I was considering this table was the preference for it in the dj business, I figured if it was good enough to play in front of crowds then it should be good enough for me. I want to get my expectations right. all this audio stuff can get really expensive, all I can spend is $250. Jack.
  8. I am looking at buying an entry level turntable and have read good thing about this turntable, so I'll ask here, a place I trust, what are your opinions on the Technics 1200mk2 or the 1200mk3? If I am patient enough I can probably get a well cared for used one on ebay with a cartridge and stylus for around $200.
  9. Thanks for all the replies. Which one of these items do you think would be the cleanest. I've been told here, that klipsch speakers (being so efficient) will pick up noise other than the intended media. Are any of the above devices better than the others? I really like the idea of the airport express. Thanks again for all your input. Jack.
  10. I've bought a new laptop and would like to connect it to my yamaha reciever, not a permanent install just something to play the music on the computer or since I have wireless maybe play internet radio. What is the best way to do this? I want it to be clean, no trash or hum. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks Jack.
  11. Scott Serota, I will do one of two things, build a Heresy size LaScala and put heresy components in it or keep the heresys that I already have as rears and center. I feel the heresy is the best speaker to compliment the LaScala, once the tweeter is tamed down in the heresy the transition of sound from speaker to speaker is almost seamless. Thru trial and error I hope to have a LaScala series of speakers fronts, rears, center, and sub looking as though they all came from the same family.
  12. Frzninvt, Thanks for sharing those pictures, that is an example of fine craftsmanship. I hope to scale mine even further to about 2/3 (size of a heresy) I can only hope that mine will turn out as good. I'm going to buy some practice bc plywood first and see how that goes.
  13. Marvel, I have viewed the small Lascala from Germany and can't do the metric thing. HBDRbuilder has some great plans for the standard LaScala all I have to do is convert it to a 2'3 scale. I know the doghouse is sealed, I should have said spec. sealed, thinking that dividers may have to be installed inside of the doghouse to achieve the correct cubic inch recomendations for a particular woofer or size woofer. I have a sub to fill in the bottom, I was trying to figure the best way to get the most out of the woofer situation in that small LaScala. j- malotky said he had plans at one time using a 12" heresy in a 16 x 16 bass bin with a 125 hz roll off. I was hoping to get lower, there may be other 12" or 10" woofers with a lower frequency range than the standard heresy and still have enough high to meet the mid horn. I don't know. J-malotky, I wasn't thinking 4 way, I was talking woofer substitution keeping it a three way. I was also considering a bass horn. I am the stage manager for a coliseum a often have the opportunity to listen to some very strong bass horns and love the sound. I would like to use the Lascala bottom, don't know how well it would work.
  14. tpg What I was suggesting is to use a 6" or 8" sub woofer instead of a woofer
  15. Ok, since bass roll off is the issue couldn't you use a 6" or 8" sub woofer. Forgive me for I don't know what I am talking about simply taking stabs at making it work. In my truck I have 2 JL audio 6" subs in sealed boxes that I made out of 3/4 mdf to JL specs and they hit low. Would using a small sub woofer(even if it doesnt hit as low as it should because of box design) compensate for the low you would loose using a standard woofer or would there be frequency gaps between the mid and the sub. Thinking out of the box, the look is what I am after so if there is a sealed enclosure inside the dog house that you can't see in order to get the low roll off needed, that would be ok.
  16. heresy2guy, Would you mind posting the web site that you gained this info from, everytime I load or refresh your post the graphs are stacked on top of each other and are incomplete, it's a problem with my computer. I want to hard copy and bind this. Thanks, Jack.
  17. tpg, After reading your post I measured the Las and the Heresy, I found that the little Las would be 2/3 the size of the normal one. I wasn't looking at the exact science of the project as I really wasn't aware of it. I was thinking more of just build it and see what happens, I would use 5/8 bc plywood for a first attempt. The woofer section is the only critical part as the mid and tweeter don't care how the cabinet is designed, is this correct? Here is a thought, If everything was 2/3 including the woofer 10" how far of the mark do you think it would be? There's a lot of thinking going on here. Jack.
  18. I have a pair of LaScalas and have really come to appreciate not only their performance but also their look. What I was thinking of doing is making a half size LaScala about the size of a Heresy and putting the Heresy parts in them. I have been thinking of this project every day for about 2 weeks and I have to know what you think. Would I loose any bass from putting the Heresy woofer behind the dog house. I have a sub so I can fill the bottom end, just curious. I also want to build a center with Heresy guts and two 8 in. woofers behind little dog houses on either side of the horns and eventually build a sub out of the bottom of a LaScala. I want an all LaScala entertainment room just don't have room for all full size ones, besides I think little LaScalas and a custom center with 2 dog houses would look WAY COOL. I've gone LaS loco. Jack.
  19. Just to throw my 2 cents in, I also have true unfinished birch LaScalas, they are a little dull from handeling, dust, and some small staining from items sitting on them. I purchased them from the original owner, they are dated 1985. The problem I have with them being unfinished is, the edges of the plywood are unprotected and will peel if caught on something like carpet. What I would like to have is mine sanded and finished with a dull clear coat that would look natural and still seal the wood and protect the edges. Has anyone tried a sanding sealer? I was told this would give the look that I am after. Would it be a thick enough finish to protect the edges from peeling? Jack.
  20. You know all this seems pretty simple. I'm sure by now the person in charge of Klipschs product development is aware of the grumblings that are going on in the sub forum or for that matter the discussion of other named products. I have to believe the person having a vision of a forum sponsored by klipsch had to think, lets start a forum and see what klipsch owners are saying about our products, since it's uncensored we may find out what they really think, we will have first hand knowledge and be able to make needed changes to products so we can keep an edge on the competition. There can be no better angle for research and development than right here. You have real world feedback from your product owners, they tell you where you're hitting, all sections of the forum, and they tell you where your missing, sub section. If there was something about myself that was missing, I would hope that I had a true enough friend to tell me about it. Klipsch you have that. I think this issue is getting spun so much that the context is getting lost, it's not about buying somebody elses product. If SVS and HSU can build an affordable sub, so can Klipsch. Klipsch is a pioneer in the industry, there is nothing they can't do. Klipsch, embrace this forum for what I believe it was designed for, get your sub guy in here and ask, whats going on, what do we need to do, what do you want? You will get an honest answer. Just build a sub with a price thats comparable, it doesn't have to be better, and I will buy it. Because it's you, KLIPSCH! This discussion should be over, it's time for a positive move, get your people in here, lets make this a team effort, YOU CAN'T LOSE.
  21. I have been a member since Jan. 2003 and am mostly a reader, only 72 post and have never replied on anything controversial as I don't possess the klipsch knowledge to debate effectivly however This issue seems to be more about supply and demand. I will partially take Treys side, I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to know you have top shelf products with an undieing loyalty and still people talk about and buy others( Just the subs) me included. SVS pb1-isd $645.00 delivered to my door. I couldn't find anything Klipsch that came close to that. I belive there should be more talk about Klipsch but you have to have competitive subs in affordable ranges not just the king of the hill. Klipsh has been around longer than most and has set and maintained a standard for high end audio and their price has been an indicator of that. Klipsch is also in less store so an audition is less possible and if you do find a store it's a very small one that caters to such an exclusive market that they seem to charging more than suggested retail because they know their clientel doesn't check their wallet before they buy. I think people understand that you can have more for less, other companies are doing it, if it wasn't for the used market I wouldn't have what I do. If there are two products that are comparable then loyalty will win everytime. There is one other area that members have expressed interest in, the center for Heritage speakers, I may have missed a response from Klipsch but I don't remember them addressing that issue. so we have two areas that have been brought to the table, a center and subs. You are aware of it, we know quality products can be made at affordable prices, your members are telling you what they want from you, not someone else. That is your loyalty. So instead of smacking that hand, shake it, ask for more input. These members are here day in and day out because we care, not just about our Klipsch, but about THE Klipsch. This is your R&D, If something is lacking these members will be honest about it. I apologize if I offend or have insufficient information, I am only going on what I have read and certainly can't read every post. The squeeky wheel gets the grease, I here the squeek where's the grease? Jack.
  22. DeanG, Never once thought you were slamming, being in a firehouse for over 18 years you gotta have thick skin, a sensitive easily offended individual wouldn't last long, if we find you have thin skin, it's over with. ShapeShifter, I didn't get to a clipping level, as my volume increases on the reciever the indicator goes lower with a -# readout. I got to about -18, if I had to guess clipping would probably start around -10 as its final destination would be -1 or -0. Either way I'm not going there, so in short I quess I do have it figured out. It's fun to know you have this evil level in your system to where you just wont go. Jack.
  23. Thanks for the replies, looks like what it all boils down to is, don't hurt your ear and it wont fry your gear. Easy enough to remember.
  24. DeanG, I read your reply 3 or 4 times before I responded and LOL everytime, I was trying to be serious, didn't see the funny side of it until you responded. I was thinking more along the lines of, don't turn your receiver past -8 db as it starts to distort or adjust the settings on the sub like this so it doesn't extend too far then you can turn it up as loud as you want without any damage or calibrate it this way. I'm sure you can tell by now I am new to this. It all started when a friend gave me a pair of Heresy II, I began to research Klipsch, found this forum, and I blame everyone here for the other purchases. I am still very much on the learning curve so at times you just have to consider the source. It was nice to start the day with a good laugh, thanks. Jack.
