    At first glance (with minimal research), it appears Velodyne and SVS have a good standing reputation (not saying there aren't other good brands I just don't know of them). Demos will be in store regardless but it would be nice to know where to look...

    Unfortunately, both those brands are only available internet direct... but they do make good subwoofers. The thing with highly efficient mains is they require large / powerfull subs to keep up with them. If you are looking for a commercially available subwoofer, personnally I'd probably look into one of the horn loaded subwoofers from Danley Sound Labs... but you have to be flexible on esthetics. [;)]

    Where is your sub located in relation to your main speakers? If they are not on the same plane at an equal distance from your seating position, you may need to tweek the phase control on the sub.

    Sounds like the phase may be inversed (externally or internally) ... Or some cancelations occurring...

    I'm running a Khorn / Cornscala / Cornwall 5.1 setup and I too feel a sub is a must. Even though those speakers have good clean bass, i feel modern recordings (and a couple of exceptional older ones) have alot more lower bass than we imagine. Having heard that lowest octave, I can't go back to 2.0....

    Yes, someone did have four Klipschorn, a La Scala and a pair of Cornwalls as I recall: frzinvt.

    I use Klipshorns as main, Heresy II as surround and a La Scala as center. I would argue it's the best matched center since it has the same top section, followed by the Belle.

    I would agree too with the La Scala as center. I wonder about doing a khorn center, it would have an enclosed back like the 60th anniversary did. PSG. this would be perfect in your setup!

    Yup, I've seen that version of frzinvt setup... But at the time he was in crampt quarters, hoping to upgrade. And Q-Man had a modified klipschorn centre... Interesting adaptation (lied the bass bin on it's side).... But you need the room...

    But I agree with the above in that a LaScala would be the best 'small' center from klipsch... Followed by the belle. I'm running my own stumpy version of a DIY Cornscala (using khorn mid and high, and the Cornwall woofer), as many others here... As I needed the height to fit in my screen and a heresy wasn't enough.

    The surrounds are much less critical IMHO ... I'm just running cornwalls...

    Actually, I'm ready!! 20 miles per gallon of water, free "fuel" along the way to town. Get's up to about 5 miles per hour and can top out at about 20 mph for 5 -10 minutes at a time. Parking can be an issue, but there's some nice spots at the end of the supermarket parking lot. Got a couple of them so I can make it a family outing.....

    Emissions may be an issue though... :-/

    Thanks guys for those suggestions and links... I agree there are almost infinite choices out there. Taste wise; I'm a bit in the same line of thinking as Gil... leaning towards a veneer with dept, yet that is not garish as my room does have pretty modern / clean lines.

    I do like the golden / reddish looks (like the lacewood)… perhaps I’ll order a sample book. Just for reference sake, the sites mentioned so far are:

    I've been working on refinishing my D-Series Khorns... and I'm contemplating different veneering options, so I thought I'd start a thread to collect some suggestions.

    I've opted to go with a cabinet styling similar to the current model (very thin collar, flush top, etc) but I'm going to paint the top cabinet black like the 60th anniversary edition. This will match my cornscala centre I've recessed into the wall that I will also be painting in black. All the speaker cloth will be black. What that leaves me with is the very visible k-horn front panels to veneer... as well as my rear channels. I'm hoping / feeling it'll produce a striking front end in my current décor.

    Now to the crux of the matter... choosing a nice veneer, with depth, that goes with my taste. So far, a couple of veneers have caught my eye such as:

    Lacewood – same as was used on the 60th anniversary Klipschorns

    Bosse Cedar – same as Greg's Volti Audio Vittora Speakers (greg928gts) ... both his craftsmanship and veneer is stunning on those. Is it hard enough a wood?

    Sapele – it can be quite stunning... I'm not sure if it would be a bit to much for a khorn though?...

    Get a tried and true Marantz AV7005. e. Other

    I figured I’d post even though I don’t have much advice as I’m kind of in the same position... I have also been considering the AV7005 while cautious of the Emotiva... looking for other alternatives.

    One option I’m considering as well is using the Anthem MRX 500 as a pre-pro due to the ARC software. I’m currently looking for a dealer (and free time) where I could audition one head to head with a Marantz...

    Just thought I’d throw it out there…

    On a sabbatical of sorts, I guess... ;) Got busy with life, post ‘divorce’... but missing my hobbies. I did manage to build my interpretation of a Cornscala center channel... and started visually converting my D series Klipschorns into hybrid of B an C similar to the current versions... but I’ve been short on time. [*-)]

    Yup... even though I avoided the IB discussion earlier (I had seriously considered some horn loaded alternatives, before settling on an IB)… I’m very satisfied with my IB, which is still pumping away effortlessly... :) How about you? See you’ve got one of each...

    Now why can't we get music CDs recorded like that!!!???


    I feel it's due numerous reasons including larger budgets, the sound engineer working with the assumption that the system includes a capable subwoofer, controlling in studio what gets sent to which channel... as well as working to create a feeling rather than pure reproduction…. to name a few. There are some beautifully dynamic CDs out there… but it’s a crap shoot sometimes.

    But what I really wanted to say was… Your sub looks great!... talk about testing one's woodworking skills... [Y]

    I'm another to use K-horns mains... IB subwoofer... and Cornwall
    rears... while i'll be soon replacing my Heresy center with a custom CornScala
    shortly... which will hopefully provide the closest match possible without
    using an actual K-Horn. I seem to recall Q-man modifing a
    Khorn (placed it's bass bin sideways to use the wall floor intersection) to use
    it as a center at one point. The problem with the typical vertical Khorn
    is it requires a false corner and an acoustically transparent projection screen...
    otherwise the screen ends up being too high on the wall for comfortable
    viewing IMHO.





    The idea behind the custom CornScala is to maximize bass
    (LaScala's seem quite lean compared to Khorns), minimizing the height, eliminating
    the need for the false corner, and keeping the same upper section on all three
    front speakers.
