  1. Stupid movie but the avalanche scene in Vin Diesel's mega hit, XXX is great to show off your sub(s). My wife came close to kicking me out when I brought that one home from blockbuster! "What, did I marry an 8 year old?"
  2. Dave - You're not going to find a lot of solid state fans in this forum. Your sx-1280 is very similiar to my kenwood kr-9600. Both mid to late 70s huge, powerful receivers (way more than the CWs need - can't turn mine past 2 on the dial without pictures falling off walls). I always thought my SS sounded great with my CWs but after spending some time on this forum I'm really curious to hook some tubes up to them and see what all the fuss is about. My only worry is I'll like it too much and start spending money behind my wife's back. BTW, my CTF-9191 tape deck matches your receiver. Look it up sometime.
  3. Way to go Dave, you SOB. Just kidding. You'll really enjoy them. I really can't complain too much since I've enjoyed mine for the past 23 years. Another pair would have just been icing on the cake. Too windy for golf today so I think I'll watch the war for a while and listen to some tunes. Congrats.
  4. It's a rare occasion when I get my wife's OK on something like that. Already had the cash in my pocket and the van gassed up. Maybe I'll play some golf instead.
  5. Someone nabbed Rodney's CWs Friday night before I even had a chance to get directions to his house. Anyone from the forum? Oh well, my wife's happy. I was really looking forward to those retro grills!
  6. Rodney - Email me or give me a call (301)980-4074. We can set something up for this weekend.
  7. Rodney - I e-mailed you from work today but left early so I don't know if you responded. If Frzninvt doesn't want them, Im only a couple hours away and would love to take a serious look. I wouldn't drive 2 hours through VA if I wasn't serious! Let me know the status and where I can reach you tonight or tomorrow. If you already replied to my e-mail, I'll see it in the AM. I'd love a second pair of CWs for my music room downstairs. I was going to wait and try to find some K-horns but after measuring my stairway I'm about 1 1/2 inches shy of fitting them through the door. Thanks!!!
  8. Mine were definitely laquered. They've never been oiled and have not dried out at all - just dusted and a little furniture polish over the years. Just out of curiosity, why would some be laquered and others not? Was it an option when ordering custom veneers? They were the only pair Myer-Emco had in the store when I bought them new in 1980 (the receipt says I paid $1400). Any idea what their retail price was back then?
  9. King HDBR Sir - Got my CWs back yesterday. They cleaned the cabinets with woodsoap, vacumed the insides, cleaned the horns with q-tips and cleaned the grills with air pressure. They haven't looked this good since I brought them home with me 23 years ago. They look BRAND NEW! BTW, they are stamped on the back of each with the initials MM KA. Serial #s are 24U332 and 24U333. I assume that was you. One question: Should I use boiled linseed oil on zebrawood as you would on other veneers?
  10. Well HDBR, unfortunately I cannot check to see if you were my builder until they are returned. Assuming you were I give you and your helper an A+. They are still in perfect condition (other than 1 or 2 very minor and unnoticable dings from 20+ years and many homes including 4 different college houses). I ended up throwing away the boxes last year as they were practically dissinegrated. They had never been moved without them until this morning. Last month I finally went digital and bought a home theatre system to build around the cornwalls (widescreen HDTV, rear, center, sub, etc. all taken away to be freed of fire damage). TV/DVDs sound wonderful, however imagine my dissappointment when playing music for the first time through the new receiver. I ended up buying a Niles DPS-1 switch box so I could continue using my old stuff for music. I now have the best of both worlds (except having 20 different pieces of electronics in one room). Thanks again for probably making my cornwalls and I'll let you know for sure when I get them back.
  11. Thanks. I'm usually not a stupid person but I may have been today. I called and they are going to gently clean the grills and the cabinets and give them back to me. I was cringing the entire time watching them being loaded into the truck. I bought them new in July 1980 but they may be '79 vintage. Thanks for your feedback.
  12. Sorry to jump in with an unrelated topic but this is my first time in the forum and I didn't know how to ask a question on my own. I have a pair of 1980 cornwalls and recently had a chimney fire in the room which they reside. I reluctently let an electronics restoration company take them to assess the damage and was not happy with the care they took to load them in their truck. They still work fine but had a 1/8 inch of soot covering them. All is currently original and I'm wondering if I should just let them get cleaned and returned or should I let them try to replace any parts. The cabinets were not damaged and I think with a good cleaning they'll look as they always have - beautiful. Am I the only one out there with Zebrawood Cornwalls? I have never heard anyone else speak of zebrawood. They're incredibly beautiful and I'm pretty freaked out about leaving them in someone else's hands. Any advice other than get them back ASAP? BTW - I predict that sometime in 2004, I will get a free pair of Khorns and by 2005 I will be running 3 different systems with various tube amps/preamps, spend almost a month's salary on a turntable, take 2 hour lunch breaks to scour thrift shops for used vinyl, own over 500 jazz albums and become another victim of the money sucking, time consuming, loon-filled Klipsch forum.
