  1. The macs sounded better to me so I guess it's a no brainer.Have you had any experience with macs? They are not a matched set.One has a transformer installed inside the bottom and there are other diffs.Where would one start?I've built an amplifier kit b/4 but knowledge I have not!Would I be wise to swap out all the caps? Randy
  2. Craig, Sorry to butt in but you seem knowledgeable about tube gear. I've just recently purchased a pair of lascalas to replace the ones i sold 2 years ago. My problem lies in the state of all my old tube gear. Everything is down. I swear I don't remember everything being broke when it was put away. Tried the macs first, one amp breathes and the other motorboats after 10 or 15 minutes. The mkII's next. One amp won't fire up.st70 next..one output tube starts to meltdown! Sheesh, what's one to do. Listening to them thru an av and dvd player now. In your opinion which would be the ones to redo first? And would you recommend any specifics? I apologise again for butting in, Randy
  3. I believe that the transformer that is in one is a stock part, it is stamped mc-60.The wiring is different in the amps and the connection blocks are different. They were made years apart I believe. I'll try the parts place, thanks
  4. Hi,have a set of mc-60's,one a ser # 9** and the other # 2f8**. The insides are pretty different. One has a transformer inside and the other not? Neither one is working properly now and a fellow that works on electronics is looking them over now. One Question I have is where to find new filter caps for them. Another is has anyone had any experience with these. I used them years ago before they started going south then put them away in a bedroom closet. Was also wondering if it would be wise to go ahead and replace any parts now while they are down? Any ideas? Thanks, Randy
  5. Sorry to disagree but I've done alot of A_B with friends comparing cd and records and 90% of the time they will pick the record as the cd.To them it sounds better. The volumes were matched.I'm not getting down on cd's,listen to them most of the time.Just an observation.
  6. Thanks for the response.I'm a little rusty with the iron but believe I could do it.Do you have the schematics or part list for Al's K version?
  7. Looked up the new Lascalas I purchased and they are 86's.Type AL crossovers. Was wondering about upgrading these or if it is neccessary. Are the newer drivers without the alnico magnets considered inferior? The old ones I owned were alnico but I can't do an A B comparason.
  8. I had a set of lascala's that sounded great in my house and figured that the k-horns would sound better, not so.My friend Jim (a very talented carpenter) wanted a pair of K-horns also.He bought a junk pair,we took them apart, measured and built two pair.It was not good for me.His sounded great and still do,my room did not do so well. I traded mine away and just last week finally bought another pair of lascalas and am happy again.the back wall where the speakers sit is only 11 feet wide, the room 30 feet long.8 foot ceiling. On the right is an alcove app. 5 foot by 7.5 feet then an openig to the foyer then an area(dining room) that is 12.5 x 9.5 with bar opening 7 foot by three foot into the kitchen. The k-horns I traded away sound great in my friends house,it's a large room with cathedral ceilings. Sorry to be so long winded,Randy
  9. I'm using two mac 60's on 86 lascala's.Not using now but up and running are two dynaco MKll's with one for parts. If one knows the dates on these babies i'd love a reply!Thinking of going Curcio upgrades on these and replacing the mac's.Using a counterpoint SA-7 pre, sota tuntable, and a cheap rca cd player.
