Aggie Klipsch
Going to buy a BR player and am wondering if I use the analog 5.1 inputs on the receiver, set the BR to PCM, the question is while my receiver decodes 96khz PCM will the internal decoders in the BR send the signal to my receiver? Will I have to set in the menu of the receiver to decode all formats? Sure would be nice just to use Toslink and forget about it. Anyone know the reason for this? Eddie2u
The new HD sound format could only be bitstreamed through a HDMI wire to the receiver, or processed within the BD player and sent out of its 5.1 analog outputs. Since your receiver does not have a HDMI connection or HD audio decoding you will not be able to bitstream the HD sound formats to your receiver. If you use a Toslink cable the HD Audio will be downconverted. Example: If you play a movie with a DTS-HD Master sound track it will be downconverted to DTS. The only way to hear the BR HD sound on your receiver is to buy a BR player such as the Panasonic DMP-BD55 that decodes the HD Audio and sends it out analog to your receiver through the BR players 5.1 analog outputs . http://reviews.cnet.com/video-players-and-recorders/panasonic-dmp-bd55/4505-6463_7-33248633.html?tag=mncol;also Blu-Ray player specs http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1050507

Eddie2u
You can't bitstream with a PS3 but a PS3 will decode the HD audio to PCM and sent it to your receiver through HDMI. You will only see PCM on your Onkyo display. Your receiver will not be do the decoding.

Any good movies that I can try out in the new formats with 7.

Eddie2u
It is not the Onkyo 706. The Onkyo 706 could process it but the playstation 3 just doesn't bitstream the format to the receiver for the receiver to decode.
Eddie2u
Look here the PS3 only decodes. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1050507

Eddie2u
If you want your receiver to say TrueHD the receiver needs the raw information from the disc. The PS3 will not send that info to the receiver. The PS3 decodes the format itself and turns it into PCM and sends (Bitstreams) it to the receiver. The receiver receives the signal and decodes it as PCM.The PCM signal is HD audio. I do not think there is any sound difference. Not that I have read. More info on the PS3 here. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=931796

Moderators Youthman Posted December 24, 2008 Moderators Share Posted December 24, 2008 The interesting thing is that the PS3 has an option for bitstream or PCM in the settings. I haven't tried to select bitstream since I knew it could not do it. I wish it would say DTS-Master on my receiver but like others, everything I have read says PCM vs Bitstream is the same quality. The only difference would be if say your blu-ray player had a lesser quality decoder than your receiver (or vice versa).

I cannot tell if anything is different or not. Still plays regular dvd's and the only bluray I have is underdog and its playing ok. but I still can not select truhd or other formats.
