kdcarroll
While replacing my Heresy K-77's with the OUTSTANDING Crites 125's, I noticed (again) that the original wiring inside the speakers appear small (high gauge) with some brittle points on the insulation. As the speakers were wired in 1979, would I derive any benefit from "rewiring" everything but the crossover (replaced with Crites crossovers) with at least a lower guage? I'm not thinking about anything exotic like silver; but would I "hear" any improvement by rewiring the pair with 12 gauge wire (Blue Jean) with better insulation?? I look forward to hearing your thoughts as always! Ken
Moderators dtel Posted January 3, 2009 Moderators Share Posted January 3, 2009 I'm no expert but I would guess little or no difference by rewiring, after the wire connects to the driver what size is it after that, very small, just a guess 20ga ? I would guess the long run to the speaker is much more important to have a decent size and #14 or #12 will go a looong way ! IMO
djk
Stock wire was 16ga, I see no point in going heavier, 12ga is a real PITA to work with too. If you want to splurge a bit, buy silver-plated Teflon wire. http://www.apexjr.com/wire.html I recommend two different colors of 18ga, twist in a drill. The original low priced Kimber used 4 conductors of 20ga braided for a 17ga equivalent.
Blvdre
Wire does age; conductors become oxidized, insulation dries out, soreplacement is a good idea. Consider it maintenance. You may not hear adifference, but your efforts will keep your speaker in good playingcondition. Since I like car analogies, you don't notice a differencewhen you change your oil, but you do it to keep your engine in goodrunning order.
