Post back with the make/model of the turntable and cartridge.

BTW -Does your amplifier have a dedicated phono stage?

Yes the obvious reply to that would be-Sounds like it plugged into a regular line-level jack to me instead of a phono input or possiby mismatched cartridge types on a phono preamp(doubtful).
