Closing in backs of Khorns - my impressions

Recommended Posts

I have decent corners and I did this mod with one of the pair I have

I can't say it's better than the pair that sits downstairs without the enclosed
back but it allows a lot of flexibility of where you can put them. If I want to
move them I can (about 260 lbs each) and have had them moved in and out of the
corners with out noticing any apparent change. It’s not something
that everyone wants to look at but when they are tucked back into the good
corners they don’t appear to be all that different. The effective length of
these is 40.25 inches so they are not a true 4 Feet. The two rooms (one
upstairs and one downstairs) that both sets of Klipschorns are in are both 17
feet 4 inch square so not an ideal room design but you need to work with what
you have. The enclosed backs are along one wall and pulled about 2 feet out
from the other right now. At the moment I have a pair of unused lascala clone bass bins turned sideways to extend the other side. I have no wife so that part of
the equation is not a problem. Aa far as the new construction goes build your
corners like a brick $h1t house, ie 2 x 6 blocked every 12 inches vertically with
a sheet of ¾ plywood and then 5/8 sheet rock over that would be a good start. Glue
or PL would help too.

To do it properly wouldn't you have to extend them out to the 25" from were the grill would be. If this is true hmm now I am thinking were my shorter wall off of the corner is, if I were to do this it would extend past and cover up the window that ends that wall I guess I would have to see how it looks. If I didn't do the full 25" extension how would it sound either way with or with out. I guess it might be the same, then I would have to sell the corners. Decision decisions.

Now to some other points, one of Khorns is a very good clone that I wouldn't mind do this to. Now the collector in me finds it hard to do it to my factory 53'. Though I don't ever plan on selling them. I guess I will start with reinforcing the corners and go from there I can always add the backs later If I choose to do so.

Thanks for the info Gary, you do some nice work.

Hi Nick

I didn't try
shorter sides; my guess is with some sort of false wall or cabinet acting as an
extension you can get by with less.. Windows, I have read are just about
transparent to the bass frequencies. I am no expert and just an amateur with
all of this stuff. As I said in the linked thread, these Khorns that I have were
sold as parts money so I could afford to take liberties with what I did. A 53
is not something I would not mod, any clone is just a repro so I guess that’s
something different. I am just trying to have fun and that is the whole point
of listening to music. I hope you get some other opinions as more info is
usually better.
